Introduction
• Laboratory activities have long had a distinctive Central role in the science
curriculum and science laboratory activities.
• Science educators have suggested that many benefits occur from
engaging students in science laboratory activities.
• At the beginning of the twenty first century, we are entering the new era
reform In science education.
• Both the content and pedagogy of science learning and teaching are being
scrutinized, and new standards intended to shape and rejuvenate science
education are emerging.
• In quire-type laboratories have the potential to develop students abilities
and skills.
Learning in and from science laboratories
• Over the years many have argued that science cannot be meaningful to
students Without worthwhile practical experiences in the school
laboratory.
• Unfortunately, the terms school laboratory or lab and Practical have been
used, two often without Precise definition, to embrace a wide array of
activities.
• Typically, the terms have meant experiences in school settings, where
students interact with materials to observe and understand the natural
world.
• Some laboratory activities have been designed and conducted to engage
students individually.
• While others have sought to engage students in small groups and in large
group demon setting.
Characteristics of a good science laboratory
• It has to be spacious to allow enough space for pupils to have
freedom of movement and maneuverability.
• It must be conducive for hardwork. This depends upon physical
conditions like fresh air, ventilation, heat, light, temperature, colour
scheme and maneuverability.
• It’s plan and design must provide elements of flexibility for effective
teacher demonstrations and individual and small group work of the
problem solving variety.
• The varied type of science club activities likely to be organized by the
science teachers out of school hours are not excluded.
• Provides certain facilities for objectification by means other than the
use of concrete materials.
• It must promote enough teacher supervision of the pupil work.
• It should have storage facilities for equipments.
• It should have water, gas and electric provisions wherever they are
needed.
• There should be an emergency exit if is not situated on the ground
floor.
Factors need to be taken into consideration
laboratory
1. The number of students.
2. The number of science teachers available.
3. Method of teaching adopted.
4. Finances available.
5. Time allotted for practicals.
6. Nature of school.
7. Design of the lecture-cum-demonstration type laboratories.
Laboratory
• In the laboratory part of the room are provided six laboratory tables
which are made of wood and are perfectly plain.
• A blackboard is also provided on this side of the room.
• The laboratory tables are of the size 6’×35’ and are provided with a
shelf on the working side just below the top.
• Four students can work on each table. At school level the laboratory
are not provided with any sink.
Some of the reasons for not providing the sinks are
as follows:
1)Economy :
• A large amount that needs to be spent on plumbing and a network of
drains is avoided.
• Cost of sinks is also saved. For most of the experiments at school level
a trough can serve the purpose.
2)Usefulness
• The table is quite useful for both-physics and chemistry.
• In absence of sinks more space is available for use as working space.
3)Appearance and Cleanliness
• The floor of the room is not broken for providing drains etc…….It gives
better look
4)Tidiness
• The tables if provided with sink would make the room untidy because
such tables invariably allow splashing of water which is likely to
interfere with experience and is likely to create problems.
Advantages of combined lecture-cum-
laboratory room
• It’s very economical.
• It’s compact and provides enough space for seating, working, storage
etc….
• It can be furnished easily and with meager resources.
• It provides enough and comfortable strong space for the students.
• In this room, science atmosphere prevails.
• It provides an opportunity for better control.
• Every students has his assigned place. Which is indicated by his name
written on a card placed in a brass card holder fixed on the leg of the
table.
• Class monitors be named for cleaning dirty apparatus after school
hours or during interval period.
• Students be made responsible for the correct assignment of their
tables for the black and white lines to be pointed on the floor.
Equipment for physics laboratory
• Working tables with teak wood top.
• Atleast one table having gas point fitted to it. They may be used for
experiments on heat.
• Projected platforms for balances.
• Almirahs
• Demonstration table having drawers, water and gas points.
• Wall board or black board
• Two large sinks at the corners of the laboratory.
• Stools (in two size)
• Physics laboratory should have an attached dark room.
Equipment for chemistry laboratory
• Almirahs
• Wall board or black board
• Demonstration table (8’×4’) with cupboards, water and gas points.
• Balance room should be attached to the laboratory.
• Working tables with cupboards, shelves, water and gas points.
• A fume cupboard.
• Sinks on each Working table or atleast two large sinks at the corners
of the laboratory.
• A wooden box half filled with Sand for use as waste material box.
• Acid proof drainage system.
• Shelves for reagent bottle on each working table and wall Shelves for
storage of reagent bottles.
Benefits of educational science kits
• Educational science kits are designed to supplement formal classroom
education.
• These kits contain lab equipment, material, manuals and references to be
hands on to provide a holistic learning to students.
• There are numerous benefits that educational science kits offer to
students.
• A child is able to learn science experimentally with the help of these kits.
• Experimental learning or learning by experiences essential for knowledge
and ensures that the learning stays in the mind for longer time.
• Educational science kits make learning more effective for students.
• Educational science kits are indeed the safest way to learn science.
• There are many theories and principles in science that can be
understood only when demonstrated practically.
Conclusion
• Physical science laboratory and educational kits are essential for the
child’s ultimate learning experience.
• They make learning fast, easy and enjoyable.
