NIMS MMS Study Guide 1
For the upcoming NIMS test, please refer to the material that we’ve covered in Section 2, Units 1 through 8. In addition to the
textbook material, you can review your textbook & workbook questions, previous Tooling U assignments, and your notes from the
power-point slides that we cover for each topic. In addition to the above, please refer to the specific topics mentioned below.
These topics have appeared in previous Tooling U assignments and we have covered this material in the past few lessons.
Remember, it’s not about remembering the answer, but how to solve the problem. When taking the sample test or the actual test,
read the question carefully and understand what the problem is. Some answers might not be exactly as they seem, for example, if
an answer falls within a range, choose the closest answer that makes the most sense, some logic is necessary.
Example - A process calls for a slip or sliding fit for a 1.000” diameter shaft to fit into a hole. The clearance between the shaft and
the hole should be?
a) .0001
b) .0150
c) .0009
d) .010
Look on the RC class of fit table in either the Machinery Handbook or in this case, Figure 3.1.29 on page 221.
Find the range where the 1.000” diameter falls into on the left side of the table. Subtract the clearance between each class and see
what answers you get. For example, RC1 clearance is .3 and .95. We interpret that as .0003 and .00095, if you subtract them, you
get .00065. The RC2 clearance is .3 and 1.2. We interpret that as .0003 and .0012, if you subtract them, you get .0009. The RC3
clearance is .8 and 2.1. We interpret that as .0008 and .0021, if you subtract them, you get .0013. The RC4 clearance is .8 and
2.8. We interpret that is .0008 and .0028, if you subtract them, you get .002. Is there an answer in the above? If so, you are done.
If not, choose the closest answer.
