South Sudan has re-launched its bid to write a new constitution. President Salva Kiir
signed the Constitution Making Process Bill, 2022 into law in December, paving the way for the
establishment of a team of drafters who are to put up a proposed supreme law within two years.
The new law allows restructuring of the National Constitutional Review Commission, the team
set up 10 years ago but which must be re-trooped to reflect current realities. President Kiir,
according to the new law, needs to appoint the team in consultation with coalition partners
under the Revitalised Agreement on the Resolution of Conflict in South Sudan (R-ARCSS), the
peace deal that helped end civil war in 2018. As to the report from Africanews, South Sudan
first attempted to write a new constitution, but it was marred by bickering by top unity
government leaders over appointments.

Mali's military junta leader, Colonel Assimi Goita, on Friday pardoned the 49

absentia and sentenced to death. On national Malian television, Government spokesperson,

Zimbabwe has registered its largest wheat harvest in 2022, making the country a
self-sufficient agricultural powerhouse. Zimbabwe managed to harvest375 thousand tons
of wheat, 13% higher than the previous year, breaking a half-century old record. The area sown
to wheat has increased by 10% and, above all, the state has set up a policy of distributing
fertilizer and buying crops via a public body, the Grain Marketing Board, which has won over
farmers. The country no longer needs to import wheat to meet its needs, saving up 300 million
dollars in import costs. According to Africanews the maize sector, the main cereal consumed in
the country, is also progressing, but remains insufficient to meet national needs.

Hundreds of supporters of Brazil's ex-president Jair Bolsonaro broke through

police barricades and stormed into Congress, the presidential palace and the
Supreme Court Sunday, in what President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva condemned as
a "fascist" attack. A sea of protesters dressed in the green and yellow of the flag flooded into
the seat of power in Brasilia, invading the floor of Congress, trashing the Supreme Court
headquarters. The veteran leftist, who took office a week ago after beating Bolsonaro in Brazil's
October elections said the vandals, will be brought down with the full force of the law. The
protesters were seeking military intervention to either restore the far-right Bolsonaro to power
or oust the newly inaugurated leftist Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva. Protester Sarah Lima told AFP
they were demanding a review of the "fraudulent election." Lula signed a decree declaring a
federal intervention in Brasilia, giving his government special powers to restore law and order in
the capital. He said that the so-called “fascist fanatics,” as well as those who financed their
activities, must be punished, and also accused Bolsonaro of encouraging their uprising.

Up Lula
Bolsonaro responded to the raids by condemning the "pillaging and invasions". Writing on
Twitter, he said peaceful protest is part of democracy, but vandalism and invasion of public
buildings are “exceptions to the rule”. At least 300 people have been arrested and Justice
Minister Flavio Dino said the acts amounted to terrorism and coup-mongering and that
authorities have begun tracking those who paid for the buses that transported protesters to the
capital. He made no specific mention of the protesters’ actions in Brasilia.

The UN called Monday for "massive investments" to help Pakistan recover from
last year's devastating floods. Secretary-General Antonio Guterres said Pakistan was
"doubly victimised" by climate change and a "morally bankrupt global financial system". He told
an international conference in Geneva, which is seeking billions of dollars to support recovery
from the disaster No country deserves to endure what happened to Pakistan. Guterres opened
the one-day event appealing to the world to help Pakistan bounce back from floods which
submerged a third of the country, killing more than 1,700 people and affecting more than 33
million others. According to Pakistan's so-called Resilient Recovery, Rehabilitation and
Reconstruction Framework will need $16.3 billion. Pakistan's government has said the country
should be able to cover half the cost, but is asking the international community to fund the rest.

In our health update, a new study has found Physical activity programs may help
relieve symptoms of depression in younger people. For a study, published in JAMA
Pediatrics, researchers analysed data from 21 previous studies that involved a total of 2,442
young participants. The team found that physical activity interventions were actually associated
with reductions in depressive symptoms. According to them an hour of physical activity three
times a week produced the "biggest benefit" in kids . The researchers found the reductions in
symptoms were greater in participants above 13 years old with depression diagnosis.
Furthermore, the team also found greater benefits with programs that were shorter than 12
weeks. In 2020 a similar study tied sedentary behaviour to depressive symptoms among
adolescents. The story is from Medial Daily.
