Assignment Thermodynamics 1

1. State and explain the first law of thermodynamics. Derive its mathematical formulation.
2. Explain with example: a) open system b) closed system c) isolated system.
3. What is a state function? Give example.
4. Explain, what is meant by:
a) isothermal process
b) adiabatic process
c) isochoric process
d) isobaric process
e) reversible process
5. State whether each of the following will increase or decrease the internal energy of the
system: (a) Heat transferred to the surroundings
(b) Work done by the system
(c) Work done on the system
6. How much work is done on/by the system, if the internal energy of the system decreases
by 100 J when 200 J of heat is supplied to the system? [Ans. -300 J]
7. The volume of a sample of a gas increases from 0.5 L to 0.7 L under a constant pressure
of 1 atm. At the same time, 10 J of energy flow into the system. Calculate the change in
the internal energy. [Hint: 1 L atm = 101.3 J] [Ans. -10.3 J]
8. Under what conditions is the change in enthalpy of a system equal to the change in its
internal energy?
9. What is the sign of the enthalpy for (a) an exothermic reaction (b) an endothermic
reaction?
10. What is Hess’s law? Illustrate Hess’s law with the help of a suitable example.
11. Dissociation energy of H2(g) and Cl2(g) are 435.4 kJ/mol and 243 kJ/mol respectively.
Enthalpy of formation for HCl(g) is -92.2 kJ/mol. Calculate the dissociation energy for
HCl. [Ans. 431.4 kJ/mol]
12. Calculate the heat of the reaction
CH ≡ CH(g) + H2(g) CH2 = CH2(g)
If the bond energies of C = C, H—H, C ≡ C and C—H bonds are 170, 104, 123
and 99kcals/mol.
13. Determine the enthalpy of the reaction
C3H8 (g) + H2 (g) C2H6 (g) + CH4 (g)
Given the bond energies of: C—C = 347, C—H = 413, H—H = 436 kJ/mole.
14. Calculate the heat of combustion of glucose from the following data:
C(graphite) + O2(g) CO2(g) ΔH = -395 kJ/mol
H2(g) + ½O2(g) H2O(l) ΔH = -269.4 kJ/mol
6C(graphite) + 6H2(g) + 3O2(g) C6H12O6(s) ΔH = -1169.8 kJ/mol
[Ans. -2816.6 kJ/mol]
15. Calculate the enthalpy of formation of benzene. Given
C6H6(l) + 15/2O2 6CO2(g) + 3H2O(l) ΔH = -3280.1 kJ/mol
H2(g) + ½O2(g) H2O(l) ΔH = -285.9 kJ/mol
C(s) + O2(g) CO2(g) ΔH = -395 kJ/mol
[Ans. 52.4 kJ/mol]
