ALL ABOUT MATTER

Matter- anything that occupies space and has mass. It is

composed of tiny particles called molecules.
Molecules- are tiny particles made up of two or more atoms that
are joined together by chemical bonds
Atom- the basic unit of a chemical element

PROPERTIES AND COMPOSITION OF MATTER

1. Observable- tell features that make it different from other
matter
2. Measurable- refer to components and other proportions
3. Observable through your senses- describe the
appearance of matter

TWO KINDS OF PHYSICAL PROPERTIES OF MATTER

1. Intensive Property- cannot be changed even if the mass
changes. (color, texture, thickness)
2. Extensive Property- it can be changed once its amount
changes (mass and volume) These two properties can be
measured.
a. Mass- amount of matter that an object has or contains.
 It can be measured using a platform balance
expressed in g. or kg.
 Mass cannot be affected by gravity
 Mass can be affected by density
b. Volume- refers to the space a matter occupies.
- The amount of space occupied by an object
 It is a measure of space taken up by something
 Can be measured, expressed in ml or cubic cms.
 No two objects can occupy one space at the same
time.

Weight- the pull of gravity on matter. The heavier object has more
mass.
Density- amount of matter contained in a given space
Gravity- pull of objects toward the center of the earth
Capacity- available space to hold something

FACTS
1. Every object on earth is made up of molecules.
2. Moon’s gravity is relatively weak.
3. Weighing scale is used to measure the weight of a person or
other goods.

CHANGES IN SOLIDS, LIQUIDS AND GASES

1. Evaporation- liquid turns to gas

a. Boiled water becomes steam
b. Alcohol put in an open container
c. Newly washed clothes dry up
*Steam or water vapor is the smoke-like substance that
rises when you boil water.
2. Condensation- gas turns to liquid
a. Heavy clouds drop as rain
b. Water droplets in a cold glass
c. Water droplets from lid of the pot
3. Melting- solid turns to gas
a. Butter exposed to heat
b. Ice cubes left in the glass
c. Frozen ice cream left at the table

4. Freezing- liquid turns to solid

a. Water turns to ice
b. Oil when frozen
c. Melted butter or ice cream when frozen

5. Sublimation- solid turns to gas without passing the liquid

phase
a. Mothballs in cabinet
b. Solid air freshener like Albatross in the bathroom

MATTER
SOLID LIQUID GAS
Definite No definite shape No definite shape and
shape volume
Color Takes the shape of its Takes the shape of its
container container
Texture Occupies space Can be squeezed
Mass Can be spread out to
occupy available space
