SURFACE AREA
Most Essential Learning Competencies (MELCs):
1. Visualizes and describes surface area and names the unit of measure used
for measuring the surface area of solid/space figures. (M6ME-IIIi-91)
2. Finds the surface area of cubes, prisms, pyramids, cylinders, cones, and

Background Information
SURFACE AREA
A solid is a three-dimensional figure. One example of solid is the house brick
shown below.
Many of the solids we come across in our world are combinations of special
types of three-dimensional figures such as prisms, cylinders, pyramids, cones, and
spheres. Measurement of the surface area is very important to us if we are concerned
with the quantities of materials used to cover the surface area.
The sum of the areas of all external surfaces of a three-dimensional object is
called the total surface area (TSA).
S = 7 cm
Solution: A cube has six congruent square faces. The surface area of a cube is equal
to the area of a square face multiplied by 6.
Side (s) = 7
Area of square = s2
= 72 By substitution
2
Area of a square = 49 cm Exponentiation
Total surface area = 6 x 49 cm2
SA = s2 x 6
Surface Area of a Pyramid
The surface area of a pyramid is the sum of the lateral area and the area of the base.
Example:
In the figure, if a side of the square base measures 10 cm while the slant
height of each of the congruent faces is 15 cm, find the surface area of the pyramid.
Solution:
SA = s2 + 4 (1/2 bh)
Surface Area of a Cylinder
As shown in the figure below, the base of a cylinder is circular. If the body is cut
along a line perpendicular to the base, we get a rectangle whose length is equal to the
circumference of the base. The width is the height of the cylinder. The area of the
rectangle that is formed is called the lateral area.
Example:
Find the surface area of the cylinder in the figure.
Solution:
Lateral area = 2 π rh
r = 2 cm = 2 (3.14) x 2 x 8
= 6.28 x 16
= 100.48 cm2
h= 8 cm
Area of the lateral base =2 (π rh2 )
= 2 ( 3.14 x 22)
= 2 (3.14 x 4)
= 2 (12.56 cm2)
= 25.12 cm2
SA = (2πrh) + (2πr2)
Surface Area of a Cone
A cone is a solid figure that has a circular base and one vertex.
Example:
Find the surface area of a cone if the radius of it’s base is 4.25cm and its slant
height is 8.5 cm.
Solution:
The segment from the center to any point on the sphere is called the radius.
The diameter of the sphere passes through the center connecting opposite points on
the sphere.
Solution:
Surface area= 4πr2
= 4(3.14) (6)2
r = 6 cm = 4(3.14) (36)
= 452.16 cm2
