Present perfect tense is an action or situation that started in the past and continues in the present. It is an
action performed during a period that has not yet finished. Here, in this chapter you are going to learn
about present perfect tense comprehensively.

Theoretical Review
Learning Material
Stating and Asking the Action Happened in the Past without Specific (Present Perfect Tense)
1. Form of the Present Perfect
We form the Present Perfect with have and the past participle (regular verbs: infinitive + -ed; irregular
verbs: third column of the table of the irregular verbs)
have/has + past participle
Note
Has : third person singular (he, she, it)
Have : all other forms (they, we, I, you)
past participle:
regular verbs : infinitive + -ed
irregular verbs : thirrd column of the table of the irregular verbs
a. Affirmative sentences
regular verbs irregular verbs
I/we/you/they have played football. I/we/you/they have gone to the supermarket.
He/she/it has played football. He/she/it has gone to the supermarket.
b. Negative sentences
regular verbs irregular verbs
I/we/you/they have not played football. I/we/you/they have not gone to the supermarket.
He/she/it has not played football. He/she/it has not gone to the supermarket.
c. Interrogative
regular verbs irregular verbs
Have I/we/you/they playedfootball? Have I/we/you/they gone to the supermarket?
Has he/she/it played football? Has he/she/it gone to the supermarket?

Using the present perfect, we can define a period of time before now by considering
its duration, with for + a period of time, or by considering its starting point, with since + a
point in time. FOR and SINCE can also both be used with the past perfect.

For + a period of time

for six years, for a week, for a month, for hours, for two hours
example : I have worked here for five years.

Since + a point in time

since this morning, since last week, since yesterday
since I was a child, since Wednesday, since 2 o'clock
example : I have worked here since 1990.

Reminder:
have been is the present perfect tense of to be, and have gone is the present perfect tense of to go.
have been and have gone are often used with similar meanings:
I’ve been to Japan a few times = I’ve gone to Japan a few times
However, in some contexts, the meanings can be different. I have been refers to a completed journey (or
journeys) in the past. I have gone can refer to a journey from which the speaker has not yet returned.
He has been to America. = He has visited America (and has already come back).
He has gone to America. = He is visiting America (and is still there).

Dengue Fever Prevention
Dengue fever is commonly found in tropical and subtropical regions. It is caused by viruses that
are spread by the Aedes Aegypti mosquito. It is reported that scientists have not discovered any vaccines
to protect people againts the virus. The only thing that people can do is to create good sanitation to
minimize the spread of Aedes Aegypti mosquito.
The spread of the mosquito can be prevented by cleaning areas that are potentially used as
breeding sites. The mosquitos live near water and lay their eggs in the walls of water containers. They
may live in unsealed septic tanks or water tanks, discarded tyres and bottles, or vases. We have to
regularly check our surroundings and throw discarded bottles or tyres away and close any water
containers.
Wearing clothes that cover the whole body or sleeping under a mosquito net at night are good
precautions. It is always highlighted that a single bite from Aedes Aegypti is enough to make you sick. So
that, living with good sanitation is a must.

Mahogany

In the natural rainforest, Mahogany is a very large canopy tree, sometimes reaching over
150 feet in height, with trunks sometimes more than 6 feet in diameter above a large basal
buttress. It is a generally open-crowned tree, with gray to brownish-red fissured bark.

Mahogany is perhaps the most valuable timber tree in the whole of Latin America and has
been heavily exploited for most of this century. Mahogany is becoming increasingly rare, and is
already extinct in parts of its original range.

Mahogany varies from yellowish, reddish, pinkish, or salmon colored when freshly cut, to
a deep rich red, to reddish brown as the wood matures with age. Mahogany is fine to medium
texture, with uniform to interlocking grain, ranging from straight to wavy or curly. Irregularities
in the grain often produce highly attractive figures such as fiddle back or mottle. Mahogany
polishes to a high luster, with excellent working and finishing characteristics. It responds well to
hand and machine tools, has good nailing and screwing properties, and turns and carves superbly.

Mahogany is regarded by many as the world's premier wood for fine cabinetry, high-class
furniture, trimming fine boats, pianos and other musical instruments, sculpture, joinery, turnery,
figured and decorative veneer, interior trim, and carving.

Sharks
Originally, sharks are type of fish that live in the sea or ocean. Sharks have lived on earth for
almost 400 million years. Today there are about 375 species of sharks. The smallest is the dwarf dogfish
which less than 20 centimeters log. The huge whale shark can be more than 15 meters long.
Like all fish, sharks are included vertebrates (animals with a bone) A shark’s skeleton, however, is
not made of bone. It is made of flexible material called cartilage.
Sharks live in seas all over the world. Most sharks live in warm waters. However, sharks have
been spotted near the North and South Pole. Sharks live in salat water, but some can live for a while in
fresh water. Bull sharks, for example, can swim up the Missisippi River. Some kinds of sharks live in
shallow water along coastlines, Other sharks live far out in the open ocean. A few species live deep down
in the sea.
Most sharks have powerful jaws and rows of sharp, triangular teeth. They use their teeth and
jaws to crush their prey or tear out pieces of flesh. You teeth are anchored in your jaw. A shark’s teeth are
set into its gums. Sharks often lose teeth growing behind the first set. As a shark loses teeth, new ones
move forward to replace them.
Fish, along with shellfish, is the favourite food of most meat-eating sharks. Great white shark will
sometimes eat larger sea creatures such as seals, dolphins, whales and other marine mammals.
Sharks play an important role in keeping ecosystems in balance. Sharks often eat weak or
diseased animals. Biologists fear that without sharks, the number of other animals in the sea would
quickly grow out control and eat all the food. It might take many years to restore the delicate balance that
sharks help maintain.

Remedial
Read the following text and answer the questions.
The Baduy
Little more than three hours away from Jakarta there is a traditional community that has turned
their back away from modern technology. They don’t own phones, use the Internet, wear shoes or listen
to the radio. Living in voluntary isolation, they are a secretive group who turn away outsiders. This group
lives close to the city of Banten and they are known as the Baduy people.
Generally, the Baduy are divided into two groups: the Baduy Dalam and the Baduy Luar. The
Baduy Luar act as a buffer zone to stop visitors from entering the Sacred Inner circle, the Baduy Dalam.
Even though both groups are barefoot, it is so easy to differentiate them. Baduy Dalam wear white and
black cloth as clothing, meanwhile Baduy Luar wear black and other colors of clothing just like us. Some
people say that the black cloth the Baduy Luar people wear is an indication that they are not pure
anymore, that they are breaking some rules of the community, such as their willingness to accept modern
influence into their daily lives.
Right after we go into the outermost village of Baduy called Kaduketu, we can sense a different
atmosphere straight away. We can see middle-aged women walking around with a log over their shoulder
and kids chasing each other with big smiles on their face. Traditional Baduy houses in Kaduketu are
made of bamboo that is bound with rattan wood. It is impossible to find a concrete house inside Baduy
territory.
With many great views and fresh air, Baduy offers a lot of things for us to explore. You can take a
bath down the river or simply walk around, observing the interesting Baduy’s daily life. The Baduy relies
on farming to meet their daily needs. During harvest season, they will keep their paddy into the barn that
is called ‘leuit’. Leuit is usually located quite far from the settlement, keeping the paddy safe if any
disaster happens in their living space.
Electronic devices are banned inside Baduy Dalam. Hence, it is prohibited to take photographs.
“There are lots of stories about tourists who forced to take a shot but they were followed by bad lucks
afterwards. Their camera fell down the hill or into the river,” said Jaka, a Baduy Luar native.
If we’re thinking about what to do when we come here, then we need not worry because there are
lots on offer, like enjoying the true relaxing times and the feeling of being isolated from modern technology
and man-made things. One favourite thing to do might be observing communal life in the settlement. It is
a very relaxing experience and sometimes visitors find themselves missing the simplicity and beauty of
the place.
Questions:
1. Mention two types of Badui!
2. What is the similarity and differences between people in Baduy Dalam and Baduy Luar?
3. What are Baduy houses made of?
4. What do the Baduy do for living?
5. Where doe they keep the paddy in the harvest season?

Cats
Cats are all related to a cousin of a lion, cheetah and tiger. All domestic cats are descendants of a
small wildcat called Felis silvestris so Felix and Sylvester would be very accurate names for a new kitten.
In Ancient Egypt, when royal people were burried, many of them buried their pets cats with them
to keep them company in the after world.
When your cat rubs its face against you it is actually placing its scent on you. This mean that it is
marking you as part as its territory. In the wild, big cats such as tigers and lions also do this to show that
an area belongs to them.
Cats use body movements to communicate. They roll on their backs to show affection when they
feel they are completely safe, and rub each others heads to show that they are friends and do not intend
to flight.

I can show you the world Tell me, princess, now when did
Shining, shimmering, splendid You last let your heart decide?
I can open your eyes I'm like a shooting star, I've come so far
Take you wonder by wonder I can't go back to where I used to be
Over, sideways and under A whole new world
On a magic carpet ride With new horizons to pursue
A whole new world I'll chase them anywhere
A new fantastic point of view There's time to spare
No one to tell us, "No" Let me share this whole new world with you
Or where to go
Or say we're only dreaming A whole new world (a whole new world)
A whole new world A new fantastic point of view
A dazzling place I never knew No one to tell us, "No"
But when I'm way up here Or where to go
It's crystal clear Or say we're only dreaming
That now I'm in a whole new world with you A whole new world (every turn, a surprise)
(Now I'm in a whole new world with you) With new horizons to pursue (every moment,
red-letter)
Unbelievable sights I'll chase them anywhere, there's time to spare
Indescribable feeling And then we're home (there's time to spare)
Soaring, tumbling, freewheeling Let me share this whole new world with you
Through an endless diamond sky
A whole new world (a whole new world)
A whole new world A hundred thousand things That's where we'll be (that's where we'll be)
to see (hold your breath, it gets better) A thrilling chase (a wondrous place)
For you and me

there
To brighten up even your darkest nights should turn dark and full of clouds
And that old north wind should begin to blow
Keep your head together and
You just call out my name,
call my name out loud now
and you know wherever I am
Soon I'll be knocking upon your door
I'll come running, oh yeah baby, to see you again
Winter, spring, summer, or fall
All you got to do is call and I'll be there, yeah,

When I'm scared, losing ground Cause your love is so amazing
When my world is going crazy Cause your love inspires me
You can turn it all around And when I need a friend, you're always on my
side
And when I'm down you're there, pushing me to Giving me faith, taking me through the night
the top
You're always there giving me all you've got For the arms to be my shelter through all the
rain
For a shield, from the storm For truth that will never change, for someone to
For a friend, for a love to keep me safe and lean on
warm But for a heart I can rely on through anything
I turn to you For the one who, I can run to
For the strength, to be strong I turn to you

One, two, three, go!

A fool if I take it all for granted

Waking up in a dream A smart man if I keep my feet planted

Sleepwalking on another big stage To the earth 'cause the people that hurt can
understand it
You never heard peace 'til you hear people
scream You speakin' outlandish

Your name in unison, I'm so far away I'ma show you how to make it all work

From the place I used to be, struggling usually Another plan, it a short term goal for me

Look at the newer me, fate pursuing me A record sold for me

I can feel the energy in the air It's just more of and me in your ear

It feel like I'm supposed to here For you to hear Kendrick persevere

Everywhere I go I'm getting so much love

Fans, the stars, everyone

HERO

By Mariah Carey It's a long road

When you face the world alone
There's a hero No one reaches out a hand
If you look inside your heart For you to hold
You don't have to be afraid of what you are You can find love
There's an answer If you reach into your soul If you search within yourself
And the sorrow that you know will melt away And that emptiness you felt
Will disappear

And then a hero comes along

With the strength to carry on Lord knows dreams are hard to follow
And you cast your fears aside But don't let anyone tear them away
And you know you can survive Hold on there will be tomorrow
So when you feel like hope is gone
Look inside you and be strong In time you'll find the way
And you'll finally see the truth
That a hero lies in you

Grandma had cooked delicious traditional dishes for us. The breeze was perfect and we
were so hungry. During our lunch, the sky grew darker. All of a sudden, it was raining
heavily. There was no time to run to Grandpa’s house, so we remained in the hut. Water

Chameleons
Therea are 80 different types of chameleons in the world, most of them are found in
Africa, south of the Sahara Desert. The common chameleon ranges from the Middle East, along
the North African coast, as far as southern Spain.
The chameleon is a slow-moving lizard which hunts for insects among trees and
undergrowth. One of its peculiar features is its eyes, which are set in two conical sockets and
can move independently of one another. This enables the chameleon to look behind with one
eye and in front with the other.
Chameleons are well-known for their ability to change colour. The skin and body
markings can change colour to match surroundings. Among plants, for example, the chameleon
is very difficult to spot among foliage.
When the chameleon spots an insect which it thinks would make a fine meal, it shoots out
a long, sticky tongue and draw its prey back into its mouth.

44. What makes the eyes of a chameleons special?

45. A chameleon spots an insect as its fine meal. What will it do to the insect?
