Grammar - the study of the classes of words, their inflections, and their functions and
relations in the sentence. It is also the system of rules that defines the grammatical
structure of a language.

Communication Process

Subject-Verb Agreement – Subject and verb must get along and agree to each other.
If the subject is singular then the verb has to be singular, if subject is plural then the
verb should also be a plural.

Singular noun and Verb agreement


Singular nouns only one(car, tree, ball)
Singular verb always has an “s” (eats, drinks)
Example: A bird Sings. (Bird – singular noun , sings – singular verb)

Plural nouns and Verb agreement


Plural nouns more than one and not alone (birds, teeth, bananas)
Plural Verb doesn’t have “s” (bloom, play, eat)

Principles of Interpersonal Communication

✔ Psychological context - refers to the state someone is in (e.g., moods, emotions).
For example: As most of you can relate, I need my morning cup of coffee before
I’m able to process anything.

✔ Relational context - refers to the degree of depth you have with the other person.
the relationship between the sender and the receiver(s) of a message. (e.g. father-son,

✔ Situational context - what the people who are communicating think of as (label) the
event they are involved in -- what we call the act we are engaged in. (e.g. having class,
being on a date, studying, playing a game, helping a friend with a problem, etc.)
✔ Cultural context - what the people who are communicating think of as (label) the

Speech Styles - it refers to the form of language that the speaker utilized which is
characterized by the level of formality.

1. Frozen Style – (fixed speech), highest form of communicative style often used in
respectful situations or formal ceremonies.
Examples: Pledges, anthems, marriage ceremonies, laws, etc.
2. Formal Style – uses formal words and expressions and is mostly seen in writing
rather than speaking.
Examples: Announcements, SONA, welcome addresses, etc.
3. Consultative Style – third level of language, basically an unplanned speech
since the speaker uses the participation and feedback of the listener.
Examples: regular classroom discussions, doctor-patient, etc.
4. Casual Style – (informal style), usually used between, friends, or even insiders,
who have things to share.
Examples: phone calls, everyday conversation with friends, chats, inside
jokes of friends, etc.
5. Intimate Style – used in talks between two very close individuals. It is described
by economy of words, with a high chance of non-verbal communication.
Examples: Couple talking about their future plans, family sharing ideas,
very close friends sharing secrets, etc.
