(WEEK 4)
1. When you hold two pencil leads together and focus a laser beam on the slits, an image of the slits is projected on a
wall. This image depicts the laser beam's diffraction and interference as it passes through the slits. The laser beam
will spread out and make a pattern of bright and dark bands on the wall as it travels through the slits. This pattern
is caused by diffraction, which occurs when waves spread out as they travel through a tight hole. The pattern's
size and shape are determined by the size of the slits and the wavelength of the laser beam.
2. When you put a pencil in a glass of water, you'll see that it appears bent at the spot where it enters the water. This
is because light travels at various speeds through different materials, and light slows down when it moves from air
to water. As a result, as light passes through the water, it is distorted or refracted. This causes the pencil to seem
bent despite the fact that it is straight.
(WEEK 5)
A. Because the surface is perfectly smooth, it produces a mirror image - a specular reflection. However, because
it is curved, light rays are reflected in different directions depending on where they strike the spoon. The
convex side is the side that bulges out. Light rays bounce off the spoon, and the angle of incidence is the same
as the angle of reflection at the exact point where a ray reaches the surface. However, because the spoon is
curved, the normal varies at different spots.
B. Mirages occur when the ground is extremely hot, and the air is extremely cool. A layer of air slightly above
the ground is warmed by the heated ground. When light passes through the cold air and into the hot air layer,
it is refracted (bent). The light from the sky is refracted nearly into a U-shaped bend by a layer of very warm
air near the ground.
C. This is because red light is scattered more than green light, and red light has a longer wavelength than green
light.
D. When sunlight and fluorescent light (white light) is absorbed by a piece of clothing, only a portion of the
wavelengths (that make up white light) is reflected off the clothes. When the eye's retina perceives "color" in
clothing, it is actually experiencing these reflected wavelengths.
E. It usually emerges when light reflects off of water/water droplets, and also because when light encounters a
water droplet, it is refracted at the boundary of air and water and penetrates the droplet, where it is dispersed
into the seven colors. The rainbow effect happens when light is reflected inside the droplet and then refracted
back out into the air.
F. Our eyes detect all wavelengths of sunlight blended together as white. When it's about to rain, clouds darken
because water vapor clumps together to form raindrops, leaving greater spaces between them. There is less
light reflected. The rain cloud seems gray or black.
G. Because blue wavelength particles are the same size as those in the sky, they are scattered the greatest, giving
the sky a blue appearance. At sunrise and sunset, the sun is at its greatest distance from Earth, thus light must
travel the greatest distance, scattering light with small wavelengths and allowing red light with the greatest
wavelength to reach our eyes.

(WEEK 7)

1. You Can’t Directly See a Black Hole.

A black hole is called a black hole because of its color, especially since light can’t escape. What we can see, though, is the
effects of a black hole. Analyzing the surrounding area of a black hole, we can see its effects on its environment. For
example, a star that’s close enough to a black hole can be seen being ripped apart.
2. Our Milky Way Probably Has a Black Hole.
But don’t be alarmed, Earth isn’t in danger! The major black hole that astronomists believe to be within our Milky Way is
light years away from Earth.
3. Dying Stars Lead to Stellar Black Holes.
The death of large stars leads to black holes because a star’s gravity will overwhelm the star’s natural pressure that it
maintains to keep its shape. When the pressure from the nuclear reactions collapses, gravity overwhelms and collapses the
star’s core, and the star’s other layers are thrown off into space, and this process is also known as a supernova. The
remainder of the core collapses, a spot overcome by density and without volume – a black hole.
4. There are Three Categories of Black Holes.
1) Primordial Black holes – These are the smallest of black holes and range from an atom’s size to a mountain’s mass.
2) Stellar Black Holes – These are the most common black holes, and they can be up to 20 times more massive than the
Sun. There is also a variety of these all over the Milky Way.
3) Supermassive Black Holes – These are the largest of black holes, being more than 1 million times more massive than
the Sun.
5. Black Holes Are Funky.
Say someone falls into a black hole and there’s an observer that witnesses this. The person who fell into the black hole’s
time slows down, relative to the person watching. This is explained by Einstein’s Theory of General Relativity, which
states that time is affected by how fast you are going when you’re at extreme speeds close to the light.
6. The First Black Hole Wasn’t Discovered Until X-Ray Astronomy was Used.
Cygnus X-1 was the first black hole discovered in the 1960s, and it’s 10 times more massive than the Sun.
7. The Closest Black Hole is Probably Not 1,600 Light-Years Away.
V4647 Sagitarii was thought to be 1,600 light-years away but is further away than expected. Scientists now believe that
this black hole is about 20,000 light-years away.
8. We Don’t Know if Wormholes Exist.
We don’t know if this event exists since we don’t know too much about physics, but that also means that anything may be
possible.
9. Black Holes Are Only Dangerous if You Get Too Close.
Black holes are safe to observe from a lengthy distance, but not if you get too close, which also means that it’s unlikely
for a black hole to consume an entire universe.
10. Black Holes Are Constantly Used in Science Fiction.
There are a multitude of black holes portrayals in science fiction. Many examples include Interstellar, Event Horizon, Star
Trek, Battlestar Galactica, Treasure Island, Superman: The Animated Series, and Transformers.

If a star is too far away to measure its parallax, astronomers can match its color and spectrum to one of the
standard candles and determine its intrinsic brightness, Reid said. Comparing this to its apparent brightness, we can get a
good measure of its distance by applying the 1/r^2 rule.
