SUBJECT: ME-130: Thermodynamics-I

CREDIT HOURS: 3-0

CONTACT HOURS: 3 Hours per Week

TEXT BOOKS: Thermodynamics: An Engineering Approach by Y. A. Cengel

and M. A. Boles, Fifth Edition.

REFERENCE BOOKS: Applied Thermodynamics by T.D. Eastop and A. McConkey,

Fifth Edition.

PREREQUISITE: Thermodynamics-I

MODE OF TEACHING: Lectures

COURSE DESCRIPTION:

This course begins with the study of basic concepts of thermodynamics and properties of
thermodynamic systems. It is followed by an introduction about open and close systems and
heat and work interactions. Based on these concepts, First and Second laws of thermodynamics,
reversible and irreversible processes are taught to the students. The students are made familiar
with the derived thermodynamic properties such as enthalpy, entropy their relations with other
thermodynamic properties.

COURSE OBJECTIVES:

By studying this course, the students will acquire the basic knowledge and understanding of key
principles in the areas of thermodynamics. These concepts will help students in better
understanding of reversible and irreversible processes. They will learn about the inter conversion
of heat and work energies. Using this knowledge, students can understand the working principles
of power cycles, heat pumps and refrigeration cycle.
