Sericulture Unit at Gurav Pimpri, Tal. Karjat. Almost all the M.Sc. colleagues and other
friends from S.Y.B.Sc. along with teachers were present in the field visit.
Mrs. Kulange Madam, owner of the Sericulture unit provided us all the necessary
information regarding construction of Rearing House, DFL’s, incubation of eggs and black
boxing, brushing, arrangement of Rearing stands, types of rearing trays, disinfection, Bed
changing during each moult, advantages of branch/ shoot feeding, importance of Serimore
(supplement) and Vijeta, mounting and use of chandrika for cocooning, harvesting of cocoon,
to start the Sericulture business, Government policies (subsidy), required agricultural land as
per the number of DFL’s, DFL centers, Cocoon market, cocoon grades, rates per Kgs., Types
of possible diseases as per the local environment, Varieties of Mulberry best suits in this area
etc. Mrs. Kulange Madam answered all the questions and provided all the required
information to students.
After visiting Rearing house, we had visited the Mulberry plantation, where 2-acre
land was used for mulberry plantation. Long lasting K-2 variety of Mulberry was used for
moriculture. Mulberry plantation was nicely maintained and best qualities of leaves were
observed. Mulberry fruits over there was delicious and we enjoyed a lot.
After fruitful discussion and on-site visit, we all returned to college campus at
05:00 pm.
OBSERVATIONS
The mulberry plant used was of long-lasting K-2 variety of genus Morus indica.
The mulberry plant is deciduous plant and can be grown in temperate region. Morus indica is
Mulberry plant leaves provides perfect food for growing silkworms and so the
Also, the fruits of mulberries contain significant amounts of Vitamin C, Iron and
Silkworms feed on mulberry leaves all the time and cocoon formation take place.
Vijetha is a silkworm bed disinfectant used against all possible diseases in local
environment.
