Personal Biography

As an avid lover of social science, I developed a

curious mind as to with regards to exploring something
unknown and extraordinary. Due to this, I opted to enroll
in a BS Criminology at Misamis University, where I am
graduating student this upcoming July 21, 2022. I am Le
Brixs J Paglinawan, also known as “Pagong”, 22 years
old, hobbies consist of watching crime documentary,
exploring unknown, reading, and traveling. My greatest desire
is to improve and protect someone's life or to have a positive impact on many
people's lives. I aimed to meet my potential, take new challenges, and strive
hard to go beyond expectations.

I attended my junior and senior high school at Holy Cross High School in
Lanao Del Norte. During my high school life I was enrolled a TVL Strand is
designed to develop students' skills that is useful for livelihood and technical
projects. It provides a curriculum that is a combination of Core Courses and
specialized hands-on courses. On my college day, it was filled with ups and
downs, especially during my freshman year when I spent 14 days in the
hospital suffering to a Chronic Pulmonary Edema. But through those
challenges and experiences I'm molding and striving to reach my goals and
dreams in life to become a criminologist. I enrolled criminology for the reason
that I want to be a leader, a servant to our country to help those people who
seek justice and have peaceful community.

To develop my leadership skills, I must be aware, ask for feedback

frequently, and be willing to learn and improve. Being a a future leader, I must
first become a servant and has an ability to fulfil responsibility and empower
people. This will build my relationship with others by allowing myself to relate
to others by trying to put myself in an other's shoes. However, I believe that
prejudice should be avoided, and I must gain the ability to listen, respect each
individual and should be developed and serve their justice.

Statement and Purpose of the Portfolio

This portfolio showcases my personal biography, resume, personal

history statements, achievements and awards, case studies, reflections from
the experiences and career plans being a student under the College of
Criminology Department.

The contents of this portfolio are well-organized which serves as

the final output of our virtual learning amid COVID-19 pandemic. This is the
proof of all my hard work, accomplishments, dedication, and perseverance in
pursuing my studies in college. This cannot be done and completed without the
people who served as instruments for me to fulfill this journey.
HISTORY OF MISAMIS UNIVERSITY

In June 1929, Dr.Hilarion T. Feliciano and his wife, Doña Maria Mercado
Feliciano, founded the Kolambugan Academy in Kolambugan, Lanao Del Norte
as the first private high school in this part of the country. Two years later, the
school site was transferred to Misamis (now Ozamiz City) so that the school
could serve a bigger segment of the population. The school was renamed
Misamis Institute.

The Second World War halted the operations of the school. It reopened in
1946 and in the same year, government recognition was obtained for the
complete offerings of Elementary and Secondary courses. The founders
courageously launched an expansion program, and Education, Commerce,
Liberal Arts, and Law were offered and gained full government recognition in
1953.

In 1955, the name of the school was changed to Misamis Colleges. In

June 1974, the BS Social Work was offered and the first graduate course
leading to Master of Arts in Education and BS Civil Engineering gained
recognition. In 1975, the BS Nursing & Midwifery was opened.

The year 1977 was very significant as the institution was granted the
university status. Dr. Jaime M. Feliciano was installed the First President of
Misamis University.

In 1979, government recognition was granted to the B.S. in Mechanical

Engineering, Electrical Engineering, and Nursing. The Bachelor in Agricultural
Technology was granted government permit. Recognition was obtained for B.S.
in Criminology and Secretarial Administration in 1980 and 1981, respectively.

On March 30, 1984, Dr. Nestor M. Feliciano took the helm of the
University and was installed the Second President of the University.

The graduate degrees of Doctor in Education, Master in Public

Administration and the undergraduate course in B.S. Community Development
received recognition in 1984. The Master in Business Administration program
was recognized in 1985 and a year thereafter, BS Agricultural Education,
Psychology, Biology, Zoology, Forestry, and Doctor in Dental Medicine and
Associate in Criminology were granted government permits. The Computer
Technology course was recognized in 1988. In 1989, the Instructional Media
Center was constructed and was subsequently equipped to complement the
development programs of the University. In the same year the laboratory of the
College of Engineering was updated attaining full compliance to the
requirements of the Technical Panel for Engineering Education. The BS in
Accountancy received recognition from DECS in 1992.

To meet the changing demands of the times, the University offered the
following courses in School Year 1993-1994: Master of Arts in Nursing,
Certificate in Marine Transportation, Certificate in Marine Engineering, BS in
Marine Transportation, BS in Marine Engineering, BS in Computer
Engineering, BS in Occupational Therapy and BS Computer Science. In that
same year, two new majors were added: the English Language Teaching and
Mathematics Education for the College of Arts and Sciences and Education.

In 1995 the Master in Nursing was offered and in that same year, the
Forest Ranger Certificate, BS in Physical Therapy and BS in Medical
Technology were granted Government Recognition. To complement the
paramedical courses offered by the institution, the university built a modern
state-of-the- art tertiary hospital, the Misamis University Medical Center
(MUMC). The Medical Center provides an excellent training for the students in
Nursing, Midwifery, Medical Technology, Physical Therapy and Occupational
Therapy while also providing quality health services in the community.

In 1996, the University took a bold leap by connecting to the Information

Superhighway. The INTERNET was installed through the FAPENET facilities. In
1998, Misamis University established the Quality Standard System (QSS) of
DET NORSKE VERITAS for maritime education using the standard of ISO
9001:1994. The aim was to raise the standard of training and competence of
the students to a level acceptable in the global maritime industry.

At the onset of the third millennium, the institution continuously

responded to the challenges of quality education in various fields of
specialization. A one-year Seafarer Course with specialization in Deck Rating
was opened in June 1999. To widen the program for computer technology, the
BS in Information Technology was opened in June 2001. A year thereafter, the
CISCO Networking Academy Program (CNAP) opened and a six-month Care
Giver course was offered.
In October 27, 2003, by virtue of Resolution No. 393-2003, Misamis
University was granted DEREGULATED STATUS per CHED MEMO 21, S.
2004. Benefits include the exemption of the university from the issuance of
Special Order, freedom from monitoring and evaluation activities of CHED,
entitlement to the grant from CHED whenever funds are available, and the
privilege to determine and prescribe their curricular programs to achieve global
competencies.

The technical vocational curricula were restructured in compliance with

the requirements of the Unified TVET program Registration and Accreditation
System (UTPRAS) of TESDA. In 2004, the two-year courses in Automotive
Service Technician, Building Wiring Technician, Electronics Technician and
two-year courses in Automotive Service Technician, Building Wiring
Technician, Electronics Technician (machinist) and Refrigeration and Air-
conditioning and the one-year. Nursing Assistant course was given UTPRAS
registration certificates. It was during this time that the Graduate School also
submitted herself for assessment by the Evaluation of Graduate Education in
the Philippines [EGEP].

Aggressive infrastructure projects have defined the years 2000 to 2005. It

saw the rise of the H.T. Feliciano building which houses the Colleges of
Computer Studies and Criminology; the Natural Science building, which
houses the chemistry, biology, zoology, anatomy, microbiology laboratories; the
Complex Building which houses the function hall, chapel, canteen and faculty
lounge.

In April 28, 2005, Misamis University was certified by DET NORSKE

VERITAS (DNV), (Management System Certificate No. 2373-2005-AQ-SIN-RVA)
The Netherlands, through its DNV Regional Office in Singapore as having
conformed to the Quality Management System set forth in ISO: 9001:2000
standard in full scope. Five years later, in July 14, 2010, the university was
certified to ISO 9001:2008 Standard.

In 2006, Dr. Karen Belina F. de Leon became the Third President of

Misamis University. With the new president at the helm of the University, more
developments were being undertaken in infrastructure, in academic pursuits,
and in maintaining the quality management system. During the strategic
planning in May 2007, the University President announced that the university
would prepare for the Institutional Monitoring and Evaluation for Quality
Assurance (IQuAME) assessment of CHED.
The University undertook more developments in infrastructure. In June
2007, the University inaugurated a three-storey building that houses the
library in the second and third floors. The ground floor houses the various
offices of the Department of Student Affairs, Guidance and Testing Center,
Office of the Scholarship Coordinator, Internet and students' lounge and the
Research Center. In the same year, the Mock Ship and the swimming pool were
operational. The site of the old library was renovated into a speech laboratory
and computer-engineering laboratory.

The Management Information System (MIS) was organized to meet the

Technology Services to Misamis University. It is tasked to design a computer-
based delivery system to meet the needs of the university and direct the
implementation and operation of the system. Under the MIS is the Network
Service (NS), which offers electronic communication to the academe and the
community. To facilitate prompt release of students rating and enrolment of
students, the MIS developed the launched the e-grading system in October
2010.

The MU e-Grade Sheet is a web-based system that integrates the

Electronic Grade Inquiry, Online Course Evaluation and Electronic Grade
Sheet Submission with the University Student Information System. It is an
INTRANET system designed only for the university used and can only be
accessed within the campus. The e-grade system allows academic advisers,
parents, guardians, and student themselves to monitor their scholastic rating
in a semester on-line. Prompt enrolment of students was also facilitated. The
system eradicates the students queuing in the different offices to get their
rating which is a requisite of enrolment.

The university continues to be the forefront in technological

advancement with the installation of WiFi in nine key areas of the campus and
the forging of connectivity with Globe thru the MY MU SIM program. MIS also
manages the MUWeb, e-mail, DNS proxy and firewall systems. It caters a dial-
up Internet service for Ozamiz City and Walk-in Internet service to the MU
community. The MIS houses MU's Intranet, the MUNet

In July 2007, the basic science programs, the elementary and high
schools submitted for a preliminary visit while the Criminology and Marine
Transportation programs submitted for a consultancy visit. The 4-year course
in Hotel and Restaurant Management was offered. Other new offerings
included the ladderized programs of Care Giving (NC Level II), Health Care
Services for Nursing, Animation NC III, PC Operation NC II Programming NC IV
and Computer Hardware Servicing NC II for BSIT and BSCS curricula; Security
Services NC II and Security Services NC I for Criminology; and Deck Seafaring
NC II for the Maritime Education. In line with these developments, the
University upgraded its research and community extension services, in
cooperation with local government units, the provincial government of Misamis
Occidental, NGOs and some foreign countries as partners of development,
especially in the environmental and ecological management concerns. In 2008,
the University established the NMF-CLG, the research aim of the Graduate
School to cater to the researches for good governance of LGUs. Within the same
year, the covered court was constructed and was functional during the second
semester

In October of SY 2010-2011, the English Department in partnership with

the USAID has established the Job Enabling English Proficiency [JEEP]
Program to further enhance the MU Community's speaking, listening and
decision making skills. The laboratory is equipped with a 40 unit brand new
computers with DynEd course systems facilitated by competent and trained
English Professors. At present there are 23 sections taking up this program.
The newly implemented J.E.E.P facility is considered a benchmark laboratory
in the institution

My Career Plan

The journey in becoming a Criminologist is inarguably challenging.

Passion, dedication and courage are necessary when taking up this course. I
planned my whole journey to become a part of criminologist, although my time
as a student will come to an end, the knowledge and experiences I gained will
always be ingrained in my mind and heart. Before this year end my plan is to
review for the preparation in the upcoming Criminology Licensure Examination
on December 2022. I’m hoping that each step I take will result in me being a
happy and successful man. If God hear my prayers to passed my licensure
examination I will apply in the tri bureau but my priority is the PNP. My
ultimate goal in life is to be part of the Philippine National Police Organization
someday. Every journey we take is different challenges and obstacles were
going to encounter but it won’t stop me from achieving my dream instead, I
used it as motivation to achieve my goals.

Few years from now I can see myself as a police officer and already
serving our country which is my duty as a policeman. It is my childhood dream
until now to offer service in our country with my own blood and flesh. It means
that season or out of season I will consecrate my whole being to help and
protect our people against criminal acts by those criminals through this
profession. It’s not only that it is my responsibility to help them but it is my
passion and happiness to see people smiling that their justice has been serve.
We all know that we can’t buy happiness but we can make our own happiness
by following our dreams and serving our own country. My experience as a
criminology student leads me to correct those people who tell negative thoughts
and perspective about this profession. And I will prove to them that not all
policemen have bad intentions or motive in becoming PNP personnel in this
organization however I can be or we can be a good role model to our society. No
matter how long the journey will take, Patience is needed to survive and always
look for the brighter side no matter what and I will commit to improve myself
daily until I turn my dreams and goals into reality.
Reflection for the Experience

This Internship program is a learning experience involving work in a

criminal justice or criminological setting. We as Interns are expected to gain
valuable work experience as well as relevant knowledge which will add to our
overall understanding of the field of criminology and criminal justice.
Internship positions must focus on learning new material over the course of the
semester especially during this pandemic and interns are expected to
participate in ongoing training and development.

As Intern I always keep in mind that during our internship, we are in a

professional working environment.  For me this is a great opportunity for
students to network, gain work experience, develop ourselves on a personal
level, and earn recommendations for future jobs or agency that we want to be
part.  Interns are expected to act in a professional manner.  While at an
internship, we as criminology interns are not just representing ourselves, but
we are representing the school as well which is the Misamis University and the
Department of Criminology.
