Abstract
The second language is a language that people learn after learning the native language. After
birth we learn our native language, but when we get a little older, we perceive and learn another
language in or around the school. The language we learn is the second language we learn. The
English language we have been learning since childhood, this language we are constantly
learning later. The task of learning this language lasts from adolescence to adulthood. We
sometimes use the first language as the basic language in using the second language. Learning a
second language is a very stressful process. When we learn the first language, we can learn it
very easily. There is nothing wrong with our grammar; there is no inertia in our speech. We had
to use English when we were talking on the phone so we needed to learn English. We would
watch cartoons on TV that were in English, which is why we needed to learn English to
understand it. Educational Institutions Our English is the second language used in many ways
and being an international language there is no alternative way to learn it. So we often face
trouble with grammar, pronunciation, and vocabulary. In this paper, I am going to show these
difficulties and how I overcame them. I am also going to interview my friend Tasnim to know
about her journey. Then I will compare and contrast our journey.

Reflection on my journey as a L2 learner.

The second language is a language that people learn after learning the native language.
After birth we learn our native language, but when we get a little older, we perceive and learn
another language in or around the school. The language we learn is the second language we
learn. The English language we have been learning since childhood, this language we are
constantly learning later. The task of learning this language lasts from adolescence to adulthood.
We sometimes use the first language as the basic language in using the second language.
Learning a second language is a very stressful process. When we learn the first language, we can
learn it very easily. There is nothing wrong with our grammar; there is no inertia in our speech.
When we learn a second language, we feel a lot of complexity; we can't speak easily, we can't
write easily, we face a lot of complications in learning grammar. So it is difficult to master a
second language.
I am most inspired whenever I see most of the people in the world speak our second
language, which is English. They sound very nice and smart to listen to, and I feel much more
confident when I speak English. All the major countries of the world are run in English and the
language is very simple. I've been much more inspired by watching TV and watching different
types of movies. My older brother used to use English bytes most of the time at home, which
made me more interested in learning the meaning and inspired me.
Then with interest I started coaching and I had some teachers in my house who taught me. We
have had English textbooks since childhood and I have read a lot of books. As I got older, my
interest increased, so when I grew up, I read a lot of books of my own free will. Many
inspirations of the family have worked behind it. Father, brother and sister have always helped,
correcting mistakes that's the way I learn my second language.
As a beginner level learner i make a strong Foundation for language and that all Starts
with learning words and focusing on words and sentences that I actually use in my reallife
conversation. Actually I Don't want to take any learning manuals. They will Teach you lots of
things that i actually Don't need. That will start demotivating me because of too much
information that will not give an optimal boost for my language.I always make sure I have a
daily goal of at least 5-10 new words every single day and Reach the daily goal with speakly. I
Don't want to overheat my memories.I need to for sure integrate into my daily learning activists
is Daily listening. It's so crucial to listen on a Daily basis but in a nutshell what Daily listening
just creates the whole language environment into my life as well and thanks to my body, Brain,
memory will just cooperate so much Better with me while I'm studying. I always make sure my
to take one speechly listening exercise and listen to the single exercise for at least five to seven
days in a row without Changing it. I'll program my mind to understand the language more and
more. Many of our very successful learner actually Don't into the grammar before they are on the
intermediate level i think Don't need to do that Just Focus on building the Foundation for the
language and think about grammar later. It's actually a successful strategy. These are the
strategies that I followed.
I prepared myself. Set your own morale on the right goal. Then I came to learn a second
language. Learning a second language is not an easy task that I did to learn my second language.
Want to know better about the language then to learn the second language properly. Want to use
grammar and types correctly. Most of the time I have more problems with grammar, there is no
alternative to learning the correct grammar. The grammar of each language we know is much
more important. When it comes to speaking a second language, I want to make the pronunciation
of the language correct and beautiful. Want to use correct grammar and good words in writing.
So these are the stages that I have gone through. I don't like learning languages too early. It is
foolish to try to learn a language in a short time. That's what I want to read. I want to learn the
right rules and one rule after another so that the language goes away from the mind. Learning a
few words means learning the language, learning the language, rhythm, grammar, the right
words are all well known. I like to learn a language properly by slowly blending them. These are
my preferable styles of learning. Learning to read and write is very different from Most popular
languages. In my life I feel much more comfortable writing. The inertia of speaking in case the
second language is difficult, this writing is preferred. Always have to face it in front of everyone
if it can't pronounce correctly. If i don't have to follow some rules when writing, that writing will
not be acceptable but I get quite nervous when it comes to comparative speaking so I feel more
comfortable writing. Another hand i think reading doesn't help that much, but it does help us to
learn different words and sentences correctly when learning a new language. When we listen to a
drama, series , movie and song with second language it works more in our head and we can learn
it easily, so I think it is more useful to listen to something in a second language than to read.
There are many reasons behind the problems we face. One of the reasons is our education
system. It is not possible to acquire knowledge properly through biblical teaching. When we
were in school we could not practice English properly. Our family and our teacher class did not
inspire us to learn English in the right way. Which is why English is a cause of fear to us. Due to
our lack of proper English practice we were afraid of English and could not learn English
properly. As a result our English education has been disrupted. If we ever went to talk to
someone in English, they would laugh at us. This has created fear in our English education. If
our parents in our family gave us enough time and practiced enough English with us, our use of
English would be much improved. We face another problem, the change in English
pronunciation in different regions which has discouraged our English education which has
disrupted our English education. English literature is not practiced so much that we are failing to
learn English because there are not enough books in the field of biblical education. We can cite
these reasons behind all the problems. So no I Don't consider myself a successful learner and I'm
a failure second language learner.

Understanding the Development of my friend's journey as a L2 learner.

Some days ago, I interviewed Tasnim (1921813015)-one of my classmates from ENG
417.she said that Since her aunt and other relatives live abroad, it was important for her to learn
the language to communicate and keep in touch with them. He had to use English when he was
talking on the phone so he needed to learn English. He would watch cartoons on TV that the
cartoons were in English which is why he needed to learn English to understand it. Educational
Institutions Our English is the second language used in many ways and being an international
language there is no alternative way to learn it. He needs to learn a foreign language in order to
study and communicate with a foreigner. He had a lot of trouble with grammar problems,
pronunciation problems, and vocabulary problems. To learn these you need to emphasize English
grammar and practice more and more. So he felt the need to learn English to fix these properly.
He started learning English from his parents when he was four or five years old. Since his
relatives were living abroad, when he was talking on his mobile phone, he learned a lot of
English words from there and got an idea about English words. Then his formal education started
when he was in school. As a Bengali medium student, she may not have been able to attend this
language well, but there are some official institutional books for teaching language from every
small class to big class eight and the teachers teach this language. There is no exception. Has
done. As he got older, he learned English from watching English movies and English
cartoons .He was able to learn new and difficult English words by listening to English news. He
faced many problems but he tried to learn this way and he learned. Her start was not easy but she
has kept trying and she has grown a bit yet she is still learning.
The first problem he encounters is that he has a lot of problems with the use of grammar.
All the languages in the world have their own grammar. There is a lot of need for grammar in
sentence formation and correct sentence making. If we don't use the correct grammar, the syntax
will be correct or as a result it will never be correct in our language. Our second language is
English. The grammar of English has been a bit difficult for Titus, but he wants to practice a lot.
It seems to him that solving this grammar problem is a big competition. Another big problem is
the phonetic problem. Proper pronunciation of a language is very important for learning a
language, if he cannot pronounce it properly, he has to face shame and the dignity of language
learning is greatly reduced. He has faced many problems in solving phonological problems and
he has practiced different kinds of problems in the past. To him the phonetic problem seems to
be a much bigger problem. He thinks there is no need to learn the language if he cannot
pronounce it properly. The vocabulary of a language should be rich. There are many problems
with enriching the vocabulary. Many times there are many problems with enriching the
vocabulary. Reasons behind those difficulties- The first problem was that there was not that
environment to practice on a large scale, since she was a Bangla medium student. Our teachers
used to focus more on grammar rather than speaking.
He has tried to get acquainted with many new words to enrich his vocabulary. Heard new
words from different places and tried to understand their meaning and tried to remember those
words. He has tried to speak to people who are proficient in the second language and he is much
more active in different types of presentation communication so that he can master the language
better. He has practiced reading a variety of books to get his writing right so that his writing has
become better and it is improving day by day. Learning English have a term which is Critical
thinking. She would try to talk to people who were fluent in the language to improve his listening
skills, and he would try to listen to a variety of online videos and speeches by these great people,
which would greatly increase his ability to learn other languages. She has used a variety of
techniques to improve her language in a variety of books and has tried to listen to various great
personalities. As a result, his vocabulary has improved, his ability to listen has improved, and she
has been able to read different books and master the right writing techniques.
In my opinion, Tasnim's journey is related to both acquisition and learning. Firstly, when
she used to talk with her aunt over phone or in person, unconsciously she picked up some of the
words from them and used them in her own speech. She never knew that she was acquiring the
knowledge of a new language (English). It just happened. It also played a motivational role to
learn the language further. She also had some friends from English medium school who used to
play with her. From them she learnt new words, handsome pronunciation. They used to play
word puzzles that helped her a lot. Moreover, watching English cartoons was another
unconscious process of acquisition. She learned different talking styles while listening. Her
vocabulary also increased because of this. So, all of this is connected to the acquisition process
proposed by Krashen. Secondly, the knowledge that she gathered from school, colleges are
related to learning. She used to memorize the rules of grammar. Her teachers mostly emphasized
on the theories and rules. She gave effort to memorize those. It was all about a conscious
process. So it was learning. Though according to Krashen, acquisition is preferable and learning
has some bad sides. We can not live the language until we acquire it. Our ultimate goal as an
SLA should be turning learning into acquisition. When it doesn't happen, our learning process
becomes interrupted. That is why she had mentioned some of the problems that she faced. Since
she was interested in learning further, she tried some methods to overcome her problems. She
used to interact with people in English as much as possible, especially in class, with group mates,
teachers, presentations or any speech. She also tried to increase her vocabulary. At the university
level, she also learned some language acquisition processes and theories. All of this helped her a
lot to improve more. Finally, I found Tasnim's journey very fascinating and a little bit hard .She
was in a average situation where she had some limitations but not that much. The best thing
about her is the positive motivation and her desire towards learning the language. Even she
inspired me in many ways to improve. She offered me to be an English speaking partner for her
or others to become more fluent. That means her journey is still going on and she is growing bit
by bit with more refined knowledge. Nowadays, she is watching English movies without
subtitles which also increases her listening skill. She is trying her best to learn more and reflect
better which is a positive side of an L2 learner. We should also be concerned like her to become
a good language learner.

Comparing and contrasting our development as a L2 learner.

Since my school and college had a Bengali version, there was a lack of practice in
teaching English. Just like Tasnim's school and college had a Bengali version, so there were
many shortcomings in English practice like me. The use of this language is less so you have to
face some problems to learn this language. There are very few opportunities to practice here. To
practice, you have to take different opportunities at different times or with the help of different
books. Since the influence of the surrounding language is on us, teaching another language is a
bit of a hassle. We would have a lot more practice if everyone around us used it and we could
easily understand, speak, write and understand but since people around us are not very interested
in learning English and they find it very difficult, they have a lot to learn. There has to be more
interest. There were textbooks in school and college as a second language and everything from
correct grammar to second language was taught in school. It is possible to learn correct grammar
but it is a bit difficult to communicate with others due to lack of practice. There was a lot of
shortage of space but it gradually started to decrease after the rise of the university because
everyone in our university uses English language, from teachers to students all speak English
which has increased our program a lot and we are able to learn and practice the language better.
Lack of vocabulary can be a big obstacle in learning a language. I learned from Tasnim's
interview that his vocabulary was very weak when he first started learning a second language.
Since his environment was not conducive, he had to work hard to improve his vocabulary .He
had to do it himself .He rarely got the help of the environment. It wasn't fair to get as much help
from the surroundings as not everyone around was interested in using the language. If no one in
the neighborhood uses this language, then naturally his vocabulary will never improve. Since our
contexts are the same, I have realized and addressed all these problems myself. If we were
students of the English version, our vocabulary would be much better due to our environmental
reasons.because the English version has teachers, teachers and students. By using textbooks in
English, there are many opportunities to improve their English vocabulary in the environment in
which they are created. Which we didn't get. In the case of Tasnim, since his relatives lived
outside the country, he helped me to learn different words, which were relatively rare in my
case .Because only my elder brother used some words in my house. There are many benefits to
reading books in improving vocabulary. We have been deprived of learning English books in our
school or in our neighborhood. Finally we came to understand the need for vocabulary
improvement when we came to the university and came in contact with the English language.
Most people use the English language which is why our environment has improved vocabulary.
In my case, my environment is less like the past and I have received less encouragement
from the people around me. Because they did not use this language, they gave me very little
encouragement. So I have a lot of shortcomings in teaching this language .This language was
compulsory in my school and college so I had to learn it. I didn't have much interest in teaching a
second language. I didn't like it very much. There was very little enthusiasm in me. Since
everyone around me used my mother tongue, I felt more comfortable using my mother tongue. I
always had a lot of fear of English and I couldn't learn it. I got a lot less encouragement from the
people around me. Willingness from myself was so much reduced in language learning. He was
not interested in learning on his own, but in Tasnim's case it was different, although he studied
from the Bengali version, but since his relatives live outside the country, his interest in talking to
them and learning English for that environment made him very interested. So he was very
interested in learning it. He became interested in learning it on his own and was given the
opportunity to learn the language from school-college so that he could learn a lot from his own
will and work with enthusiasm. By applying it he has made the path of language learning easier.
There is no similarity between me and him, we are the opposite of each other.
Consistency is very important in acquiring second language writing skills. Here we see
this cohesion in the case of Tasnim but not in my case. Since his foundation was very strong, his
writing skills were much higher. If I speak to him in that case his syntax is much higher due to
proper attendance then this language I have not been properly attended to so I have to face many
syntax problems all along. Tasnim, on the other hand, is far ahead in terms of cognitive thinking.
Since I have less interest, I have a little weakness in thinking and a little weakness in writing to
enhance beauty. After getting admitted to the university, I understand the importance of
Cognitive thinking and Critical thinking as everything around is an English medium because
now everything has to be written in English. Without good writing skills in English, it is not
possible to get good results. There are many important things in a second language that are not
learned from an early age. Reading books and reading various articles on the internet on a
regular basis is very useful in improving language writing skills.
Another journey between me and Tasnim is speaking. From the very beginning I have
mentioned that I am a witch in several aspects then Tasnim. in terms of speaking it is more
prominent. Tasneem is far more fluent than me. I always have a habit of talking to Sia while
talking. I have a hidden fear of giving presentations, public speeches, and casual talk. I am trying
to overcome this problem by practicing it with others. Tasneem is also doing the same. However,
she advanced in this sector. The enthusiasm and cooperation of our surroundings enhances our
ability to speak. If we do not get cooperation, it will not be possible to speak any language
fluently. We have to practice a lot to speak English fluently. We lag behind in practice due to
lack of encouragement. In my case I am a bit scared to speak English because I think maybe
grammar is wrong, otherwise the pronunciation is not right, what other people will think,
because of these fears I can't speak, if l had the opportunity to practice in a right way then my
speaking might be better. I could master English fluently like an English medium student or an
English mother tongue person. Tasnim she is an optimal user of grammar whereas I am an over
user of grammar. this is how we are different from each other. Both of our Journeys have some
similarities and some differences. These differences show that my language learning is different
from Tasnim.
