My name’s Helen and I have a big brother called Bill. He is very brave but sometimes he does
things that are too dangerous so he is always going to hospital because he has hurt himself.
Last Saturday we took our dog, Goldie, for a walk in the park with our dad. There was snow on
the ground and ice on the lake. Dad saw a friend from work and stopped to talk to him. I was
throwing a ball for Goldie to fetch. When Bill threw the ball it went onto the ice and she didn’t
want to get it. Bill decided to get the ball himself. I said to him, “It’s dangerous to go on to the
ice, Bill. It could break and you will fall in the lake!”“Don’t worry. I’ll be okay!” Bill answered. He
walked slowly across the ice but when he picked up the ball, the ice broke and he fell in the
cold water.
My dad came running over. He picked up part of a tree and held it out to Bill. Bill took the
other end and my dad pulled him out of the lake. My dad gave Bill his coat and called a taxi to
take us to the hospital. A doctor saw Bill and said he was okay and we could take him home.
Then we saw that Goldie wasn’t with us. We went back to the park and found her playing with
her ball on the ice!
