3 SOIL STABILIZATION USING CONVENTIONAL MATERIAL
INTRODUCTION
Soil stabilization a general term for any physical, chemical, mechanical,

biological, or combined method of changing a natural soil to meet an engineering

purpose.
Improvements include increasing the weight bearing capabilities, tensile

strength, and overall performance of in situ subsoils, sands, and waste materials

in order to strengthen road pavements.

It is a process by which a soils physical property are transformed to provide

long-term permanent strength gains.

The Mesopotamians and Romans discovered that it was possible to improve the

ability of pathways to carry traffic by mixing the weak soils with a stabilizing

agent.

4 SOIL STABILIZATION USING CONVENTIONAL MATERIAL

NEED OF THIS PROJECT

To decrease the carbon footprint.

Conventional product used can significantly improve the geotechnical properties

of soil thus offer better result.

To increase the shear strength of a soil and/or control the shrink-swell properties

of a soil, thus improving the load bearing capacity of a sub-grade to support

pavements and foundations.

SYNOPSIS OF LITERATURE
REVIEW
In this research paper we found out about various methods and materials used for

soil stabilization.
We received a brief knowledge about various conventional material used and its
methodology and even more information about the newer or still being researched

materials and methodology used for soil stabilization.

We learnt about the changes in engineering properties of the soil, environment

impact and financial impact of conventional soil stabilization methods and

materials.
7 SOIL STABILIZATION USING CONVENTIONAL MATERIAL
AIM & OBJECTIVES
Aim
This project gives insight about soil stabilization using conventional material by performing various

laboratory test on soil to differentiate between tradition and newer material of stabilization.

Objectives
To study the benefit of different materials used in soil stabilization.
To study the Environmental Impact of different materials used in soil stabilization.
To carry out various test on soil sample collected from a site.

8 SOIL STABILIZATION USING CONVENTIONAL MATERIAL

PROCESS OF SOIL
STABILIZATION
1.The location is first checked for the existing level,
2.Then according to the level received, the soil is either removed or added to get the

required level using heavy machinery like poclain and dumper trucks,
3.Then the surface is levelled using dozers,
4.Then to improve the soil strength, stabilizing agents or additives are added on the

surface using special dumper trucks with dispensers in the rear end of the truck.
5.Then huge soils compactors are run throughout the area and
6.Then field test are done to determine whether the required strength is achieved.

9 SOIL STABILIZATION USING CONVENTIONAL MATERIAL

DIFFERENT CONVENTIONAL MATERIALS
USED IN SOIL STABILIZATION
1.Cement
2.Fly ash
3.Lime
4.Bituminous materials
5.Polymer
6.Gravel and crushed stone
These materials can be used alone or in combination to achieve the desired soil
stabilization properties. The choice of material will depend on the specific soil
conditions, type of soil and the intended use of the stabilized soil.
10 SOIL STABILIZATION USING CONVENTIONAL MATERIAL
FUTURE SCOPE
In the future of this mini project, we will conduct a soil investigation in a
site, where a ground + 10 structure has to be constructed.
The developer has suggested to do soil improvement on the ground to
construct the said structure.
So, we are going to take soil sample from the site and perform various
laboratory test to check whether the idea of constructing the building is
feasible or not.
If it is possible then we can suggest a soil improvement method using
conventional material.
11 SOIL STABILIZATION USING CONVENTIONAL MATERIAL
FUTURE SCOPE
We will be conducting the following test:
1. Plastic limit test
2. Liquid limit test
3. Shrinkage Limit test
4. Optimum moisture content test (OMC)
5. Maximum Dry Density test (MDD)
6. Standard Proctor test (SPT)
