POP-UP LIGHTS
As the automobile has evolved, certain
technological advances that were
heralded as marvelous innovations have
nevertheless died out for reasons of
changing styles and tastes, high costs,
new regulations, or a general lack of
interest. In hindsight, we have to wonder
what appeal many of these dead-end
features had in the first place. Here’s
one of them:
Introduced on the 1936 Cord 810,
pop-up—or hidden—headlamps were a
clever and fashionable way to streamline
and hide the gawky round headlamps
of the period. But it wasn’t until the
’60s and ’70s that pop-up headlights hit
their stride. At the time, U.S. regulations
dictated either round or rectangular
sealed-beam headlights. Neither
choice was particularly satisfying to car
designers, so they began to hide the
lights behind garage-door-like devices.
Or if they wanted a low hoodline or
doorstop-like styling, they’d make the
lights rise out of the hood. In the ’80s,
the Japanese jumped into the deep

Chinese Buffet! Wasn’t it Mao who said from a new Ed Hardy shirt and a bit part in the next
that painted bumpers are the ultimate The Fast and the Furious?) At some point in every
sign of bourgeois decadence? STI owner’s life, the various modifications (coffee-can
exhaust, pulley kit, A-pillar-mounted gauges) and
streetlight drag races just don’t excite the adrenal gland
in any meaningful way. To fix that, the STI driver can
simply push a button and be injected with a dollop of
Hunter S. Thompson–grade adrenochrome (adrenaline
oxidized into epinephrine), which is guaranteed to kick-
start the heart or, alternatively, flat stop it.
These days, it’s tempting to try to save a buck or two. But your inner car guy knows your engine is no place to skimp. Just
look for the big yellow jug and you’re always covered. Prestone® 50/50 Ready-to-Use Extended Life Antifreeze/Coolant
is formulated to protect any make or model car, and mixes with any color antifreeze. It’s perfectly pre-mixed, so you just
pop, pour and protect.

Consider it a course in
speed reading for the road.
Take control with the world’s most sophisticated all-wheel drive system. Super All-Wheel Control. An all-wheel
drive technology so intelligent, it reads every inch of the asphalt providing enhanced performance and stability
regardless of the driving conditions. And speaking of intelligent technology, we added a 40GB HDD
navigation system with real-time traffic and voice control for your MP3 player and mobile phone.
So neither rain, nor snow, nor annoying DJs, nor the most frustrating traffic snarl will keep you from enjoying the
ride. The 2010 Outlander. It’s different for a reason. For more information, go to mitsubishicars.com/outlander.

A Healthy Diet During Pregnancy Can Help Prevent Birth Defects And Clefts. Diet is an important part of pregnancy. Eat a healthy diet that contains lots of fruits and vegetables and foods fortified with folic acid.
According to the U.S. Government, women who plan to have a child should be sure to take sufficient levels of folic acid (400 micrograms per day) during pregnancy to help prevent neural tube defects and reduce the
risk for cleft lip and palate. When folic acid is taken one month before conception and throughout the first trimester, it has been proven to reduce the risk for neural tube defects by 50 to 70 per cent. Be sure to receive
proper prenatal care, quit smoking, and follow your health care provider’s guidelines for foods to avoid during pregnancy. Foods to avoid may include raw or undercooked seafood, beef, pork or poultry; delicatessen
meats; fish that contain high levels of mercury; smoked seafood; fish exposed to industrial pollutants; raw shellfish or eggs; soft cheeses; unpasteurized milk; pâté; caffeine; alcohol; and unwashed vegetables. For more

LIGHTLY USED CARS: FORD MUSTANG GT
In 1964, Ford invented the pony-car class with the first Mustang.
Over the ensuing 45 years, it has become the ultimate survivor
of the breed because, unlike its competitors from General Motors
and Chrysler, the Mustang has never ceased production. For most
of the 1980s, the Ford pony car was our favorite in the category,
thanks to its strong performance, usable back seat, and affordable
price, although the Camaro edged it out through the 1990s.
Our preferred model has always been the V-8–powered GT. In
the last generation, introduced as a 2005 model, the V-8 under
the long hood produced 300 horsepower from a 4.6-liter, single-
overhead-camshaft unit—enough to accelerate the car to 60 mph
in the low fives. With a price starting in the mid-20s and styling
that channeled the looks of those slick Mustangs of the late 1960s,
it was very successful: The Dearborn automaker sold almost
400,000 of them from 2006 through 2008.
That means there are plenty of those retro-styled Mustangs in
circulation, at even more attractive prices. And for buyers who want

MORE HORSEPOWER IS A GREAT
PLACE TO START: A chief weakness
of the older Grand Vitara had been its
engine: a 2.7-liter V-6 that mustered a
four-banger-like 185 horsepower. Now, the
optional 3.2-liter V-6 makes 230 horses,
45 more. Rugged exterior styling seemed
mismatched to the ute’s bland but clutter-
free interior design.
ISN’T IT THE PERENNIAL ALSO-RAN
IN ITS SEGMENT? True. The old one felt
slow and sounded rough. The new engine
elevates this SUV to the upper echelon of its
class in straight-line performance, and those
rocky engine notes seem to have spent
some time in a polishing tumbler. Our test
measured 41 dBA at idle, down two. Plus,
the car has the only combination of a two-
speed transfer case and a center-locking
differential in its class, making it one of the
most capable mini-utes off-road.
WHAT DOES IT COST? The base, rear-
wheel-drive Grand Vitara with a 166-hp
inline-four and a manual transmission
costs $19,364. Our four-wheel-drive
V-6 Luxury model, with high-rent features
such as keyless start and leather seats,
checked in at $27,164. —K.C. Colwell L
