Whose refers to a person. Whose violin is this? means Who owns the violin?
When we ask about a singular item we say: When we ask about plural items we say:
Whose (car) is this? Whose (bikes) are these?
To show the owner, we use the Saxon genitive. This is formed by adding an apostrophe ’ + s to
the name of the owner.
We use this + is when the item is in singular. We use these + are when the item is in plural.
This is Eve’s book. These are Ben’s comics.

For plural countable nouns (blueberries) and for uncountable nouns (sugar), we use some in affirmative
sentences. We use any in negative sentences.
For plural countable nouns (blueberries) and for uncountable nouns (sugar), we use any in interrogative
sentences. We use the plural form of the verb to be when we refer to plural countable nouns and the
singular form when we refer to uncountable nouns.
To make the superlative of a one-syllable adjective, we use the and add -est to the adjective.
If an adjective ends in -y, we change it into an -i and then add -est.
To make the superlative of adjectives with two syllables or more, we put the most
in front of the adjective.

Irregular verbs don’t follow a regular pattern in the affirmative form of the Past Simple:
We went to a music festival. We saw lots of bands.
But in the negative form, irregular verbs work like regular verbs, we use the auxiliary
did + not (didn’t) + the infinitive of a verb:
They didn’t go to the cinema.
A year ago, Ava visited her friend Ben in Madrid. They (meet) met at the airport. Ava (wear)
sunglasses and a cap. On the first day, they (see) an Egyptian temple
and (have) a ride on a cable car. Ava (take) a lot of photos. The day after,
they (go) to a big football stadium. People (sing) football songs.
In the afternoon, Ava (buy) a T-shirt with ‘I love Madrid’ on it.
Then they (drink) hot chocolate in a café. For dinner, Ben
(make) Ava a Spanish omelette. It was delicious!
In the interrogative form, irregular verbs work like regular verbs, we use the auxiliary did + the infinitive of
a verb:
Did you take photos? Yes, I did.

My new school
Today the plan is Mum and I visit my new school and meet the head teacher.
Imagine! We arrive at 10 o’clock. A man comes out dressed in green pyjamas with
rainbows. I look at my mum, her mouth is open.
‘Hello. I’m Mr Gart. Pleased to meet you both! I want to take you around the school. Let’s
start with the library.’ When we get there, I look around. There are students studying. They are all
wearing pyjamas, too. ‘Next, the computer room! Follow me!’ says Mr Gart, like everything is normal.
As we walk out, a child in a dressing gown runs past us in the corridor.
‘No running in the corridor. And do I see shoes on your feet, Jessica? Slippers next time, please!’ Mr Gart shouts.
‘Yes, Mr Gart!’ Jessica shouts. We walk up some stairs. My mum looks very worried.
‘This is the computer roo...’ says Mr Gart looking at mum’s face. ‘I’m sorry. Is everything OK?’
‘Uhm,’ says Mum quietly, ‘are pyjamas the school uniform here?’

The festival
The day started badly. It was cold and windy. I didn’t have my coat. My friends were late and
they didn’t meet me at the right place. I went to watch the first band on my own. Their
equipment didn’t work, so they cancelled their performance. I phoned my friends but there
was no mobile phone signal.
I went to the drinks tent and had a juice. I sat down at a table and I felt horrible. Then
someone sat next to me. It was Dustin Piper, my favourite singer.
‘You look terrible!’ he said.
‘You’re Dustin Piper!’ I said, ‘I’m a big fan.’
‘That’s nice. Can you play the guitar?’
‘Yes. I know all your songs!’ I said. He gave me his guitar and I played some songs for him.
‘Can you play with me today?’ He asked. ‘My guitarist didn’t come this morning.’ ‘Er… yes?!’ I said.
I went on the stage and he gave me a guitar and his jacket. I stood on
stage. I saw my friends at the front. They didn’t see me at first. Then
they saw me! I played really well and had so much fun. Dustin and I
sang and danced together. It felt amazing.
It started as the worst day of my life but it was actually the best!
My friends and I got lots of free things. He also gave us VIP tickets to
his next concert. He let me have the jacket and I wore it every day.
