Episode 3: Classroom Management and Learning

Learning Target

At the end of the activity, I will gain competence in managing time, space and resources to provide an
environment which is appropriate to the learners and conductive to learning.

Map

An Observation Guide to Learner’s Characteristics

Read the following statements carefully. Then write your observation report on the provided space.

1. As you observe the class, look into the characteristics of the learners. Note their age.

2. Note the population of boys and girls.

3. Focus on their behavior. Are they already able to manage their own behavior?

4. Can the learners already work independently?

5. Describe their attention span. Look into their listening skills and ability to concentrate.

While observing the classroom of Grade 10, I noticed that every student has different types of
characteristics and levels of understanding of the teacher’s lessons. Some of them can easily
comprehend and some of them need help. I can say that young learners need more motivation to keep
their attention focused during class hours. In the classroom population, there are more girls than boys.
Even if there are a lot of girls in the classroom, young girls are manageable and more attentive while the
boys tend to be more hyper and stubborn. Usually, Grade 10 students should be able to read and write
properly. However, some students showed otherwise. Some obviously needed help. Ironically, those
who are the most rowdy are the ones needing help. These students need a bit of discipline, a set of
rules, and guidelines. It should start from their own home, from their parents, so that when they are
inside the school, they can concentrate, focus, and ready to listen to their teacher's discussion. Be
guided by these tasks as you do your observation. Then accomplish the matrix to record your data

1. Are there areas in the classroom for specific purposes?

(Storage of teaching aids, books, students’ belongings, supplies, etc.)

They have a cabinet for storage of teaching aids, books and other belongings of the students. They have
also storage for cleaning tools like a mop, broom, dustpan, ragged and detergent soap. It is organized in
the back part of the teacher tables.

2. Are there rules and procedures posted in the room?

They don’t have rules and procedures posted in the room.

3. Did the students participate in making the classroom rules?

Students were given the chance to participate in rules-making. They gave their opinions on what is
supposed to be prohibited and the expected behaviour they should be showing while in school and in
class.

4. What are the daily routines done by the teacher? (prayer, attendance, assignment of monitors, warm
up activities, etc.) How are they done?

The teachers first allow the students t settle down

class. Teachers always check the attendance of their students every day. Before they start the lesson for
the day, they review the lesson that the teacher discuss yesterday. They also have homework,
sometimes.

5. Is there a seating arrangement? What is the basis of this arrangement?

The seating arrangement of the classroom are boy and girl set together. Teacher pairs the noisy student
to the quite one. Then, the hyper and energetic young learner, sets on the front of the blackboard.

6. Observe the noise level in the classroom. How is this managed?

If I am going to rate the two-section Grade 1-Mabait and Grade 1-Masunurin of 10 out of 10. In Grade 1-
Mabait, the behavior of the students is manageable and they listen to their teacher. When they sense
that the teacher is obviously, upset. In this section, I will rate 8 out of 10. While in the Grade 1-
Masunurin the last section, the attitude and the behavior of the student are seriously worst. I salute
Ma’am Sandaga for the dedication and patience of her students. In this section, I will rate it 5 out of 10
of the noise level.

7. If a learner is not following instructions or is off-task, what does the teacher do? (Behavior strategies).

If the learner is not following instruction of the teacher, like they didn’t finish writing their notes. The
teacher will not let them go home early. They have to finish their task before they can go. So, the
parents will approach in the classroom and finish the work of their children.

8. What does the teacher do to reinforce positive behaviors? (Behavior strategies)

Positive behaviors of the students are reinforced by the praise of what the student does. The teachers
compliment and make the student as a model that they have to follow. What the good deed showed by
the students. Sometimes to encourage the student they give a very good stamp to the one who stands
out during the class discussion.

CLASSROOM MANAGEMENT MATRIX

Aspect of Classroom Management

Description

Effect on the Learners

1. Specific Areas of the Classroom

The classroom Grade 1-Mabait and Grade 1-Masunurin are located on the 3rd floor of Oranbo
elementary school.

It is very difficult for a Grade 1 students to walk on stairs up to 3dr floor with big loaded and heavy bags.
The classroom of this grade should be on the ground floor only.

2. Classroom Rules

They don’t have any rules posted on the wall. But the teacher always reminding them the things they
have to do.

The student are not oblige to follow rules because it is not a mandatory obligations of the students. If
the rules and regulations of the classroom if posted inside the room. It is much better, so that the
student will be push to follow every time they see the rules on the wall.

3. Classroom Procedures

The classroom procedure are organized from the start of the class up to dismissal time.

The young learners will be productive because of the implementation of this kind of strategies.

4. Daily Routines

Most of the day it is always followed but there are days if the teachers are busy some of the routines
cannot be performed.

If the routines are always and regularly perform. This makes a student mindful of what they have to do
next after the activity.

5. Seating Arrangement

The seating arrangement of the students is boy’s sets besides the girl. The quite one student will set
beside the noisy one.

The effect of this is that the noisy student will not influence other classmate behavior like fond of talking
and playing during class.

6.Handling Misbehaviors/off-task behavior

If the students are not yet done with their work. The teacher usually, didn’t allow them to go home
early. If the student stubborn the teacher, let the young learners face on the wall.

The parents who will pick up their children are oblige to finish the work of their students. By this, the
parents will know what their children doing during class hours. Learners will able to recognize their
mistake and follow rules inside the classroom.
7. Reinforcement of Positive Behavior

The positive behavior of the student in return will get a good compliment from the teacher or have
reward like a very good stamp on their arms.

The other learners will be encourage, push and influence also to their very best during class hours.

Analysis

How did the classroom organization and routines affect the learner’s

behavior?

The organization of the classroom like teaching aids, books, cleaning tools, and other things. Will
enhance also the ability of the students to be organized in their belongings. Because if the learners see
that the ambiance of their classroom is well organized and arranged. It might influence also, the
perception and attitude of the learners. And the daily routines also will help the mentality development
of the student to be mindful of the things they’ll have to do next. A good classroom organization plus a
daily routine ritual will result in productive young learners.

What should the teacher have in mind when he/ she design the classroom

organization and routines? What theories and principles should you have in

mind?

The teacher should first consider the age and grade of the student. This will give the teacher an idea of
the ideal design, organization, arrangement, routines and educational visual aids to be used in the
classroom. A teacher must apply all the teaching principles that he/she had learned, the techniques,
methods, strategies, and approach to the young learner.

Which behavior strategies were effective in managing the behavior of the

learners? In motivating students? Why were they effective?

The strategies that are effective in managing the behavior of the learners is the positive reinforcement
approach in the class. We know that learners love receiving rewards. This the best and effective way of
managing the behavior of the learners inside the classroom. Rewards, praise and compliment stamp will
push the students to be motivated in participating in the class activities. A teacher should be the one
who encourages learners even in the very small things they do. In return, this concept will result in
positive feedback for young learners.

Reflection

1. Imagine yourself organizing your classroom in the future. In what grade/ year level do you see
yourself? What routines and procedures would you consider for this level? Why?
If I am going to organize my classroom in the future, it should be a conducive classroom. I see myself
handling a grade 4 student, someday. I will make sure that the routines and produces that I am going to
implement will give a positive effect on the learners. That the learners should not just learn from it, they
should also enjoy doing it every day. I will provide a permissive, desirable environment and a stimulating
atmosphere to get the attention of the learners.

2. Make a list of the rules you are likely to implement in this level. Why would you choose these rules?

If I am going to make rules and implement it in a grade 4, my rules are this: Student should always wear
complete uniforms, Girls should always tie their hair, Observe cleanliness in and outside the classroom,
No vandalism in any classroom property, Respect your classmate as you respect your teacher, Take good
care of the classroom equipment, Listen properly and be quiet during classes hours, Don’t be late, Be
responsible in your school task and Always ask permission to the teacher before you can go out. I
choose these rules and post them inside the classroom. So that, the learners are obliged to follow it
without hesitation, because, students nowadays didn’t know how to follow simple rules.

3. Should learners be involved in making the class rules? Why?

For me, it’s a big yes because it is a good way to let the learners reach out, speak through and express
their points of view about making classroom rules. This will encourage them to follow the rules that they
suggest. So they cannot complain if they receive consequences for disobeying it. It is a perfect
interaction between the teachers and the students, sharing ideas.

Episode 4: Individual Differences and Learners’ Interaction (gender, race and religious background)

Learning Target

At the end of the activity, I will gain competence in determining

teaching approaches and techniques considering the individual differences of the learners.

Map

An Observation Guide to Learner’s Characteristics

Read the following statements carefully. Then write your observation report on the provided space.

1. Find out the number of students. Gather data as to their ages, gender, and racial groups, religious and
ethnic backgrounds.

I conducted my Field study 1 in the School of Oranbo Elementary School, last October 02, 2019. Mrs.
Aquino, assigns me in a two sections of Grade 1 in their school. Monday, Wednesday and Friday, I am in
Grade 1-Mabait under the advisory of Mrs. Acluba. With a total of 36 students, 22 girls and 14 boys.
Mostly, their ages are around 6 to 7 years old younger and a Roman Catholic all. The second section is
the Grade 1-Masunurin which is handled by Miss Sandaga. Where I am on duty every Tuesday and
Thursday. With 17 boys and 19 girls, a total of 36 students in all. Usually, Roman Catholic and with the
age of 6 to 7 years old younger all.

During class:

1. Describe how the students interact with one another and with the teacher.

Young learners like grade 1 are very fond of talking and very playful to each other. They enjoy their
company inside and outside the classroom. Also, they sweet to their teacher even they are not listening
while the teacher discussing. If the teachers get mad and shouts to them the learners feeling towards
their teachers remain the same. They respect it and they always greet their teachers anywhere they see
it.

2. Observe the learners’ behavior and interaction relevant to where they are sitting in the classroom.

During class hours, most of the learners cannot seat a long time on their desks. They move to go to
other seats, walk away and roam around the room. Look for a classmate that they can talk to and play
with. Then this is the start of the massive noise in the classroom.

3. Describe the relationship among the learners.

I am fond of the relationship of the young learners because they're helping each other even they both
don’t understand what to do with the task. While the teacher is busy discussing the lessons. Young
learners are also busy talking especially those who seat at the back. One thing I can say that when they
are given an activity to answer. Most of them just copy the answer to their seatmates. Some of the
learners offer or share their answers with their classmates. Which is funny because it is also a wrong
answer.

4. Which students participate actively? Which students ask for most help?

What I noticed is that the students who seat on the front is the one who participate actively in a class
discussion. They are the one who raise their hands and stand up to give their answer to the question ask
by a teacher. And the students who always ask for help most, are those who seat at the back. Maybe the
reason of this teacher can only focus to the students who they can see right away in their eye.

5. Describe how a student and his/her classmates will react if being called by the teacher and was able
to answer a question?

When a student I called to answer the question, and she/he cannot answer, their seatmates are helping
them by whispering the answer. But some students are very eager and raise their hands to answer.

Outside class:

1. How do the students group themselves outside class?

Homogenously, by age? By gender? By racial or ethnic groups? Or are the students in mixed social
groupings? If so, describe the groupings.
As I observed, the students are group mostly all girls and all boys. But few girls are mixed with other
boys when they are playing outside the class.

2. Describe how the learners interact with each other.

What do they talk about?

Usually, in grade 1 learners they are always teasing each other. In a mean way, that their classmates get
pissed and they’ll start running around.

Analysis

Identify the persons who play the key roles in the relationships and interactions in the classrooms. What
roles do they play?

Every row or group of seats there is one student who is in charge to pick the notebook and paper that
need to pass to the teacher. That’s all I noticed upon my classroom observation.

How does the teacher influence the class interaction considering the individual differences of the
students?

Both Mrs. Acluba and Miss Sandaga have a good influence on the differences of their students. I can see
that they judge their students fair and

equally. They gave good feedback to the students who stand out and tell others, that they should try
their best also for their own good.

What factors influence the grouping of learners outside the classroom?

For me, the grouping of both sections Mabait and Masunurin are fair enough. The girl seat beside boys
and the quite one seat beside the noisy students. This is a good idea, so that the average of loudness in
the classroom can be controlled and minimized.

Reflection

1. How did you feel being in that classroom? Is there a sense of oneness or unity among the learners and
between the teacher and the learners?

First of all, it is very awkward because, during the class discussion, there are a students who are
distracted in my presence. But, after three days of my classroom observation, the students are excited
to see me. Which makes me feel comfortable, every time. I can see and sense, the oneness or unity of all
learners in both sections. Because I always see that they are all participating and interacting, teachers to
their learners, learners to their teachers.

2. In the future, how would you want the learners in your classroom to interact? How will you make this
happen?
In the future, I would like my students to interact with me actively and attentively. My class discussion
should not be boring for young learners. It should capture their interest and focus during the discussion.
So that I will not repeat the lesson again and again and again.

3. How will you encourage all learners, regardless of religious, ethnic or racial background, to interact
and participate?

I’ll encourage them by giving rewards like a star stamp, stickers and a compliment for their participation.
I will not discriminate those learners who will give me a wrong answer. I’ll appreciate every single thing
they do, big or small interactions. As long as the learners trying their best, in return, ill recognized them.
No matter what, by that they’ll be inspired to attend my class daily. There will be no long gaps between
teacher and the young learners.

Episode 5: Individual Differences and Learners’ Interaction (different levels of abilities)

Learning Target

At the end of the activity, I will gain competence in determining, understanding, and accepting the
learners’ diverse backgrounds; and in relating the learner’s background to their performance in the
classroom.

Map

An Observation Guide for Individual Differences

Read the following statements carefully. Then write your observation report on the provided space.

1. Observe the class to see the differences in abilities of the learners.

2. Try to identify the students who seem to be performing well and those that seem to be behind.

3. Validate your observations by asking the teacher about the background

(family, socio-economic, presence of some learning disability, etc.) of

the students.

4. Observe the behavior of both high achieving and low-achieving learners.

Note their dispositions, pace in accomplishing tasks, interaction with

teacher, interaction with others.

5. Observe the teacher’s method in addressing the individual learning needs

of the students in his/her class.

Cooperating School:
Resource Teacher:

Year/Grade Level and Section:

While I am conducting my classroom observation in the Grade 1-Mabait and Grade 1- Masunurin. I
noticed that young learners have differences in their characteristics, mental abilities, and confidence
levels. It seems that most of the girls performs well, especially those students who seat on the front.
While the students who seat at the back are seem left behind. Maybe because the teacher cannot easily
recognize what are the learners doing at the back.

When I ask the teacher about the student background. Those students who always stand out and
participate, well, it is because their parents that are hands-on their school work. They are guided by
their parents that’s why when they are inside the school. They are ready to listen to the teacher's
discussion. But those students who seem to be left behind. Usually, their parents are busy with their job
and some students, parents are working abroad. No one can take care or check on their children school
work. I can see, that there is always have a big impact on the parent's guidance to their children.

Young learners who are achievers can easily finish their task compared to low-achiever learners. They
are more active in interacting with their teachers as if they have concerns and questions. While the low-
achiever if they have something to ask they are fearful, hesitant and uncomfortable.

As I can see the teacher in both sections treat their students equally. They roam around the classroom
to check who is doing their work properly. If a student asks something, teachers reinforce it right away.
Teachers really cannot focus one by one of their students. But one thing for sure that teachers are doing
their best to nurture young learners.

Analysis

Did your observation match the information given by the teacher? Were you able to correctly identify
who among the students performed well and who did not? What behavior helped you identify them?

Yes, my observation matches the information given by the teacher. It easy to identify who among the
students performed well because they are the students who interact the most. They always participate
in class discussion and raise their hand to answer the teacher’s question. I can comprehend and finish
their activities at the right time. Compare to the other students who are having a hard time to
understand and answer their activities. It is easy to recognize who among the young learner excel and
behind in a classroom.

Describe the differences in ability levels of the students in the class. Is there a wide gap between the
students who are performing well and those who are not?

Describe the methods used by the teacher in handling the students’ differences in abilities. How did the
students respond to the teacher?
All I can say that teachers in both sections know how to adjust and manipulate the unnecessary
behaviors of the young ones. Fair enough to judge the differences and level of the student’s ability.
Then, what I like most that they have good consideration for the slow learner’s students. Example, if
they have a quiz and the instruction says; write the word “check” if the sentence is correct and write the
word “wrong” if you think the sentence is wrong. Some of the students cannot follow this simple
instruction. Instead, write the word, they’re going to answer it with a mark check and ekes. But the
teacher considers it correct as long as their answers are right.

Reflection

1. Recall the time when you were in the elementary or high school. Recall the high and low achievers in
your class. How did your teacher deal with differences in abilities? Was your teacher effective?

Honestly, in my elementary days, I am one of those slow learner students. But my teacher always
considering me because I am a well-behaved student. During my high school days, I am always with my
friends. Then my parents screwed up and I didn’t continue my studies. Then 4 years ago, I join the
Alternative learning System and luckily in one take I passed the exam. All I can say that my teachers have
a big contribution to what I am now today. Maybe without their advice when I am still young. I will not
be motivated to finish my studies know. Lifting their students while they are down is one of

the best and effective ways to encourage learners to give their best in different ways, mentally,
physically and emotionally.

2. With the principle of individual differences in mind, what methods and strategies will you remember
in the future to ensure that you will be able to meet the needs of both the high and low achievers in
your class?

As a future educator, I will make sure that there is equality between high and low-achiever in my class. I
will use methods and strategies that suit the young learner's needs. That will end up a good result and
an effective outcome. No matter what their age, gender, race, culture, and religion they are all the same
inside the classroom. I will use techniques in my teaching that is appropriate in their cognitive level.
Sharing ideas and thoughts between the teacher, learners, and co-learners is a must during class
discussion. With this, individuality can be manipulated inside the classroom.

Episode 6: Home-School Link

Learning Target

At the end of this activity, you will gain competence in reflecting on the impact of home and family life
to learning.

After you have gathered all the necessary data. Write the Learner’s profile using the outline below. Type
the profile in a separate sheet and attached it to the learning episode.

The Leaner’s Development Profile

Name of the Learner: Lea Mae A. Legaspi

School: Oranbo Elementary School

Date of Home Visit: September 6, 2019

Date of Birth: June 26, 2012 Age: 7 years old.

Grade/Year level: Grade 1-Mabait Gender: Female

Family Profile

Number of Siblings: 3 siblings

Birth Order: 2nd child

Parents

Mother: Fe Legaspi Age: 36 years old.

Occupation: Housewife Educational Attainment: College level

Father: Bennie Legaspi Age: 39 years old

Occupation: BPO Industries Educational Attainment: College graduate

Physical Development

The young learner Lea Mae Legaspi is a physically fit and healthy little girl. She is not that active in class
but she’s trying her best to participate in a classroom discussion. This is because of the timid behavior of
the students inside the school. I think in the long run the learners will grow up and can manage her
social interaction in the class.
Social Development

The teacher and Lea Mae's parent's description of her behavior are the same. They say that this learner
is a shy type girl especially when she is inside the class. But if the learner is in her comfort zone, like she
is in there house. She knows how to shares, interacts and opens up to her parents, her ideas and
thoughts. She knows how to express her feelings towards her parents. But when she is inside the school
her social behavior changes. She is lack of social interaction in the class.

Emotional-Moral Development

The learners know how to talk and open up to her parents when she is in their house. She tells a story
about what happen that day and what activity they do. But the teachers say that this student is always
hesitant and fearful to ask something about the lesson, if she didn’t understand it. It is very difficult for
learners to share the emotional aspect to her classmate and to her teacher.

Cognitive Development

Both parties say that this learner is doing well in the class. She has difficulties in the subject like Math
because it is about solving. They know that the mental development of the learner is still in the process
of regulating many ideas than been though to her. They don’t want to put a lot of pressure on the
learners. As long as the learners doing her best in their activities in school. There is no problem for the
parents to be a worry about.

Findings

I can see that the learner’s behavior in the classroom and their house are different. When the learners
are in school she is one of the quite students, shy type, lack of self-confidence and hesitant to ask for
help. While when she is in their house, she interacts well, playful and knows how to share a story about
what happened in the school. She is very different in that way.

Conclusion

Therefore, I conclude that the effective disciplinary of young learners should start from their home, from
their parents. It helps their behavior manageable and cognitive level development. From there home
they are already prepared to face the real-world problem. This will help the learners to be more
motivated, focus and inspire to go to school. If parents and teachers are both lifting and enhancing every
student's physical, social, emotional and cognitive aspect. There will be no more students will be left
behind in a whole class. It is very good to know and hear that all of the parent's and teacher's efforts will
produce a positive result for the young learners.

Recommendation

My recommendation to the learner is she must improve her self-esteem, peers and her social
interaction with everyone. This one of the factors that I see that the learners should develop first. Lack
of self-confidence can cause a negative result to every young one and even to grown-ups. They’ll feel
unwanted to the outside world, always feels awkward, doubtful, hesitant and fearful to show what they
are. Parents and teachers should help the learner with her weaknesses to be developed. So that, as she
is growing-up the learner can actively participate, make friends, share her ideas and thoughts not just to
her family but also to her classmates and to her teacher. Building every one person self-esteem is
important to be develop because we are always facing every day the outside world and the real world.

Analysis

Your findings and recommendations in the Learner Development Profile

will help you answer the question here.

1. From your home visit and interview, what do you think is the parenting style experienced by the
learner? Explain you answer.

The parenting style of the parents is protective, caring and authoritarian to the learner. The way the
parent answered my question, I can feel that she cares for the safety of her daughter. That she didn’t
want her daughter to be in harm. By that, she is also protecting her daughter in any

cause. I can see also that she requires her daughter to follow the rules that she implemented.

2. Relating your data with what you learned from child development, what family factors do you think
contribute to the development and over-all adjustment of the learner in school?

The factors that the family contributes to the development of the learner is her manageable behavior.
The learner is one of the wells behave, student, a loner and timid. This is the reason why the learner is
having a hard time to participate, interact and socialize. The adjustment for the learner is not easy
because she is used to be always inside the house. Then, when she goes to school it is difficult for her to
socialize with her classmates and teacher.

3. Does the communication between the home and school have an effect on the learner? If yes, what
are these effects?

I think for now my answer is no, it is very difficult for the learner to adjust herself to the outside world
and face real life. She feels secure and loves inside their house with her family. But if she is inside the
school she is on her own only. The learner should spend time to go outside and spread her wings. It may
take time for the learner to develop her self-esteem and confidence. Even though both of her parents
and teacher always taught her to cope up and overcome her weaknesses. But, I can see that she’ll grow-
up a wonderful and responsible person because of her potential that she is keeping inside her.

Reflection

1. Reflect on your own development as a child. What parenting style did your experience? How did it
affect you?
When I was a child, my parents especially father is very strict to us. We called it Batas Military, that’s
how my father implements rules inside our house. I am very scared of my father since I am a kid. If we
make a mistake, my father always punishes us. If my father says no, it’s a no, no one can break that.
That’s why, when I was a child, I’m also very shy, timid and a loner. But that rules shape me to be strong
and responsible enough. Develop me to be tough no matter what it may come in life.

2. As a future teacher, how would you establish good home-school collaboration? How can you work
well with parents? How can you help them? How can they help you?

As a future teacher someday, I can establish this by applying parents and teacher conferences. During
giving cards to the students I will talk to the parents or I will conduct a classroom meeting. So, we can
discuss the negative and positive side of their children. It can help me, as a teacher to know more about
their children's behavior when it is inside their house. How they manage, discipline and help their
children. Then, in return, I can tell the parents about the behavior, academic tract and student’s
problem in the class. Sharing information and ideas with the parents can help with the developing level
of each young one. By this, it is a big help for me and the parents to know more about their children.
