Post-Lab Questions
1. Predict what will happen at each of the electrodes if copper electrodes are used, with the aid
of appropriate half equations. [4]
When copper electrodes are used cathode will be coated with a pure copper metal that
contribute to electroplate. This process is defined as purification of copper as well.
Copper ions from the solution are reduced to copper atoms by gaining electrons in cathode.
electrons:
Cu2+ (aq) + 2e- → Cu (s)
On the other hand, Copper atoms are oxidized to copper ions by losing electrons in anode.
2. Briefly explain what happens (by using the item that you want to electroplate in the
experiment) during the electroplating process. [4]
Electroplating is a process where metal coating is formed using electricity on another metal.
Two electrodes connecting with power supply are immersed in electrolyte solution that contain
metal ions. The cathode is to be coated and anode will provide metal ions. Once power is
supplied, the current starts to flow and push the meal ions to move towards the cathode whereas
electrons move towards the anode. Metal ions gain electron in cathode and reduced to metal
atoms which are deposited. As a results, a thin layer is formed on the cathode. Metal atoms
lose electrons and oxidized to ions in anode that dissolve in solution.
