Prescription: A Better Me
Growing up throughout elementary school, middle school and early high school, I have
always lived an active lifestyle. I played soccer during lunch time in elementary school, and
basketball from 5th grade to about 10th grade. I was given an opportunity that would change my
lifestyle. I was awarded a scholarship during my Junior year of highschool that would allow me
obtain my pilots license for free. This award caused me to forget about my active lifestyle and
made me focus on both high school and my obtaining my license in a timely manner.
After fully focusing on my license and finishing it successfully. I have come to realize
that I have somewhat let myself go. I am not active and my eating habits have been inconsistent.
I would sometimes reminisce on old pictures where my body was in its peak physique. I got used
to my new routine of just waking up, going to school, eating, working, and going home. I
stopped incorporating any source of exercise into my daily routine. To make matters worse, my
diet was also very unhealthy. I would find myself drinking a strawberry lemonade acai refresher,
which had an unsettling amount of sugar. When I'm not eating out, I feel that the only thing
saving my diet is my mom’s homemade salmon and rice with grilled garlic which she packs for
lunch.
There are many things I want to improve upon regarding my body and overall health.
First of all, I want to start working out on a daily basis. I want to go back to my gym split of
push, pull, back, rest. I found that having people to go to the gym with, like a gym partner or

gym group, can greatly improve your motivation and is safer than going alone. Another thing I
want to incorporate into my routine to improve upon my health is paying more attention to my
diet and what goes into my body. One thing I used to get to my peak physique was a keto diet,
which I did for 3 months. It was a hard diet to maintain because I grew up with a lot of carbs like
rice and pasta. This time around I do not think I want to go back to any special diet but now I
would like to make sure that the food going into my body is not too sugary, oily, and/or
processed.
Although all the ways I would like to improve upon myself are in regards to my physical
health, there are many components to obtaining / sustaining a healthy lifestyle. According to the
Human and Social Development & Department of Geography, University of Victoria, wellness is
defined as, “an umbrella term under which we can gather the multidimensional biological,
psychological and social facets of people's lives.” There is the one that I mentioned which is
physical. In addition to physical, there is also Emotional, Intellectual, Social, Spiritual, and
represented by a snapshot view but requires instead a 'whole of life view' involving ongoing
processes of integration of awareness, learning and growth” (Miller and Foster). It is important to
live a healthy lifestyle. Sustaining a healthy lifestyle allows the person to creatively adapt in all
aspects of life resulting in an optimal level of functioning (Miller and Foster). In a study
Wellness Courses, their findings suggest that incorporating spirituality as a foundation for health
and wellness care, while also addressing emotional and physical well-being, can offer benefits
beyond both the current discussions in health care and what is usually offered as health and
I would like to go back to and even surpass my peak physique. But, instead of having one
big goal, it is important to have smaller goals leading up to my big goal. With that being said, a
smaller goal that I would like to accomplish is by first going to the gym 3 times a week. I would
like to eventually climb my way up to everyday of the week with the exemption of my rest day. I
struggle with choosing a day to start going to the gym because when I start, I do not want to stop.
So, I want to be absolutely sure that I can commit to the gym once I get started. Another goal I
would like to achieve is that I would like to keep track of the food going into my body. I do not
need to track every calorie but I want to ensure that it is not too sugary or too oily. This will also
help with me working since food intake plays a huge role on physique and overall health. My
final goal is I would like to admire the environment more often. There is an exercise I tend to do
if I feel as if the days are merging together and all the days feel the same. I look up at the world
and compliment things that I like that day. I realize it's the good things in life that make the other
things not as good. Complements can range from, “Wow the clouds look beautiful today” to “the
weather is just perfect today. I would like to do this more often so it will force me to live in the
I believe that everyone has the ability to better themselves. The only problem is, some
people do not know where to start. I think a good place to start is small achievable goals that lead
up to a big goal. A concept that is also important when improving health and overall wellness is
that change takes time. The saying, “Rome was not built in a day” heavily applies. Once a person
is able to understand the six dimensions of wellness is when they are one step closer to living
