NOLI ME TANGERE COMPARATIVE REPORT Noli me Tangere (Touch me not) is the first novel written by Filipino patriot and

national hero Dr. Jose P. Rizal in 1887 and published in Germany. The story line goes detailed with the society of the Philippines during Spanish colonial period and features aristocracy behind poverty and abuse of colonialists. In its publication, the novel caused uproar among Filipino people that also felt Spanish abuse. Last 31st day of August, Noli me Tangere was presented through a theater play. On the play that Ive seen, my imagination became broad unlike in reading the story itself. The actors and actresses gave their best to show the audience what is the real message of Dr. Jose Rizal in his novel. Although the play is a bit summarized, as one of the audience, I appreciated their performance because it was presented to its fullest. They gave the best throwing of lines and they really acted and presented by their hearts. From the costume to the stage props, from the light effects and sound effects, it was really amazing. I felt that on that moment, I am a traveller from the future to the Spanish colonization times. The actors and actresses were great. From the one who acted as Juan Crisostomo Ibarra, he acted well. From the one who acted as Padre Damaso, Padre Salvi, Maria Clara delos Santos, Sisa, Tiya Isabel, Captain Tiago, Elias and most of all, Pilisopo Tasyo, I was really amazed. They were all truly a theater actors and actresses. They were all great especially their director Mr. Jeffrey Santos. It was a worth watching theater play. About the written story, although we studied it when we were in high school, the novel seemed to be vague because all we can do is to imagine every scene in every chapter and imagine the emotions of the persons behind every scene. But still, having a background about the novel, I easily cope up with the scenes in the play. And at least, weve learn something when we were in high school and it is really great that Ive already seen a play about what Noli me Tangere really means. Dr. Jose P. Rizal wrote this novel because he wanted to awaken the Filipinos about what is happening to the country during those times. He was able to write this novel because he had an inspiration. One of the novels that inspired our national hero to write his own was entitled The Count of Monte-Cristo. The Count of Monte-Cristo is an adventure novel written by Alexandre Dumas. This adventure novel primarily concerned with themes of hope, justice, mercy and forgiveness. The novel had its main character named Edmond Dantes. He is a young merchant sailor. He was arrested as a suspected Bonaparist. He was sent to Chateau DIf, an island fortress from which no prisoner had ever escaped, and to which the most dangerous political prisoners are sent. After many long years in solitary confinement in the dungeons of the Chateau, Edmond decides to commit suicide by starvation. After nearly two weeks, he hears scratching against the wall of his cell. Concluding that it could only be another prisoner digging his way to freedom, he resolves to live so that they both might gain their freedom. He eventually breaks through into the tunnel and the adjoining cell, which belongs to an Old Italian abb named Faria. Both of them became very close. Together, they determine the names of the men who denounced Dantes as a Bonaparist. And although Faria disapproved, Edmond formulates plans of revenge against the man who betrayed him. In the end, Faria died, but before dying, he told Edmond about the secret treasure hidden on the island of Monte-Cristo. Edmond became wealthy and successfully got revenge to

those men who denounced him by means of disguising himself as Monte-Cristo and at the end of a successful revenge, he reveals his true identity. Just like the novel of Dr. Jose Rizal, Noli me Tangere is also concerned with these. He wanted justice for the Filipino people, he had his hope that someday, the Filipinos will be able to fight for our country, mercy to those innocent people and forgiveness to those who are forced to do evil. The main character, Juan Crisostomo Ibarra, son of a Filipino businessman, Don Rafael Ibarra, he studied in Europe for seven years. He was said to be Rizals reflection. They both studied in Europe and they both love our country. Rizal fought for the country by means of writing a novel. Thats how he showed his love for the country. While Juan Crisostomo Ibarra, he requested the local government of San Diego to construct a school to promote education in town. Thats how he showed his love for our country and to his fellow men. Dr. Jose Rizals Noli me Tangere showed us the true happenings in the past. We Filipino people became servants of the Spanish colonizers and because of their abusive acts; our fellow men struggled a lot. The innocent people suffered in the hands of evil. But because of our heroes, our country was able to regain its lost independence.
