Background/Big Ideas: Find the elements of argumentative text in the following paragraph.
Imagine telling a man who was diagnosed with cardiac disease to just “get over it” and “move
on.” People would be appalled at your lack of sympathy. No one would look at a heart condition and
think “oh, it’s no big deal!” or worse “He’s just faking it or being dramatic.” Yet people do the exact
same thing to people with depression all the time. Over a decade ago scientists were able to determine
the chemical causes for depression, yet despite the proven physical and chemical cause of this disorder,
many people still minimize depressed individuals’ issues. It is a problem that is compounded by the
youth of a sufferer. It is a common perception that teenagers are naturally moody and prone to
exaggeration, so when a teen approaches a parent or caregiver expressing concern over their mental
health, they are very likely to be dismissed. Minimizing their concerns and problems can lead to a
plethora of other secondary complications. Wide reaching education of the real physical and chemical
causes of depression and their manifestations and treatability in teenagers is necessary.

Background/Big Ideas: According to The Gettysburg Address, what are the 3 elements required for a
country to truly qualify as democratic. (Give exact words and explain in your own terms)
1. A government of the people = made up of a representative group of the population, from all races,
genders, and beliefs.
2. A government by the people= the government is chosen by the people in a free and real election with
real candidates.
3. A government for the people= the government works to help all people, not just the group that
supports them or can benefit them.
Your answer must mention “freedom, equality, a government of the people, by the people, for the
people.”
Could you qualify any country currently in existence as having completed “The Great Task?” Why or why
not?
It’s your opinion, but you must be specific and give reasons and evidence. Even if you ay “no” give
reasons and evidence.

3. True genocide is very rare, since the normalization of social media and the free press.
4. Still, the opinions and perspectives of minorities are often unheard, making them feel marginalized
5. It can be hard to flourish as an individual when you feel like your every move is “wrong”.
Selection Specifics:
Are there any countries in the world today facing an attempted genocide?
This is an opinion question, but you could claim that the fact 27.9% of Egyptians live below the poverty
line, meaning that 3 of 10 Egyptians do not know for surety when their next meal will be is a modern
atrocity. The fact that childhood mortality is 14x higher in third word countries than the US and Europe.
The fact that that 27.1 million people Half OF WHOM are under 18, right now, this minute are living in
refugee camps. …. Those would be some *I* consider atrocities.
Indigenous peoples have wisdom and solutions to problems that the “modern world” is just beginning to
be worried about. It is impossible to flourish as a society if your history is erased. Science and
Technology should be used wisely keeping in mind their consequences.
No. The author does NOT support the claims with specific evidence. The author primarily uses pathos
and ethos arguments, and stories of her own history to make her point.

Background/Big Ideas:
Explain the nature side of the nature/nurture debate in your own words:
Nature= you are born with what will create your personality. It is “written” into you by your genes and
your biochemistry/neurochemistry.
Explain the nurture side of the nature/nurture debate in your own words:
Nurture: You are born “blank slate” and it is your environment and experiences that “shape” your
personality
Explain the situation that the narrator of this section finds herself in:
She is an adult immigrant who is illiterate. She is joining a class to learn to read and write. She is
embarrassed because she is not as “quick” or as “good” as the other students who are younger. She has
grandchildren and she is timid. Still, she is determined to learn to write her name…. HER name.
Why might it be a problem to be living in a country where you do not read/write/or speak the language?
This is an opinion question, but it should include elements like: inability to be part of government,
inability to effectively participate in your own healthcare, inability to get sufficient work, inability to cope
with daily needs, reliance upon others.
***hint: remember, we looked at illiteracy rates in Egypt. It is a PROBLEM. Imagine what life is like for
those people here? Can they succeed? Can they truly better their lives? What about their kids? Will their
kids be likely to succeed in school if their parents can’t read? Will they even have a chance at going to a
“good school?” It’s a vicious cycle, one that deserves empathy/sympathy.
