Etiquettes of The A Rah From Shaykh Hāzim Abū Ghazaleh
1. The circle should be closed, holding the hand of the person beside you. One of the benefits of this as
mentioned by Shaykh is that there is a vein connecting from your index finger straight to the heart. In this
way, all the hearts are connected to one another. This also signifies UNITY.
2. Stand as close as possible (shoulder to shoulder) to the person next to you. This will ensure uniformity in
movement and importantly prevent the swaying of the hands. It also helps bringing the persons back in
rhythm if they go out of rhythm.
3. It is of utmost importance that the movements of our bodies be in line and together. Shaykh has
mentioned that if our movements are not together then our hearts will be destroyed, meaning you will
not gain the barakah thereof.
4. There can be cases when a person goes in ‘Spiritual Ecstasy’. In these cases if the person can be controlled
by the one next to him without much disruption then this should be done, or else one should put him/her
down gently out of the circle and the ḥaḍrah should carry on as normal. The aim is not to cause disruption
to the ḥaḍrah.
5. There will be a rotation of brothers/sisters going in the middle to inspire the dhikr. It is important he/she
should be in line with the movement of the rest of the group. Shaykh mentioned that the Nūr of Allāh ﷻ
is on the one who is in the middle in the ḥaḍrah circle.
6. Very important is that one should not mock the movements of the brothers/sisters. If one is sincere in
correcting his/her movements one should speak to the person gently in private, with the aim of advising.
Keep in mind the Ḥadīth by Tirmidhi: “It was said: And what are the single-minded? He replied: Those
who dote (dwell) on the remembrance of Allāh ﷻand are ridiculed because of it, whose burden the dhikr
removes from them, so that they come to Allāh ﷻfluttering (quivering/shaking)!” Ask yourself, who,
would you want to be, the person being ridiculed for the pleasure of Allāh ﷻ, or the person mocking the
dhākir (person in dhikr) which will be against the pleasure of Allāh ﷻ.
7. For maximum benefit of the ḥaḍrah, the dhākir should keep his eyes closed, and the focus should be on
implanting the name Allāh in the heart. Looking around at others is a distraction, which results in
minimizing the potential benefits that may be derived.
We must also be wary of the fact that ladies are more emotional than men and their body structure is different to
men, so they may vary from the men when doing ḥaḍrah. However, Unity in movement is what should be striven
for.
