INTRODUCTION

1.1 INTRODUCTION
The objective of this internship was to perform the organizational study. From this, it was
possible to learn about the overall management of the organization. The company included
different departments performing multiple functions. Ana analysis was done to study about the
multiple functions that are carried out in the organization. From the analysis part, some
practical knowledge about the HR aspects was gained. Different activities involved in the
organization were learned, which can be acquainted with the business organization. Spinning
is a prehistoric skill where, synthetic fibers warped jointly resulting in the formation a thread.
For about a long-time fiber were turned using hands by the help of effortless instruments. These
instruments were known as spindle and distaff. In the High Middle Ages, the output of the
spinners was improved. As a result, the more manufacturing was possible in the 18 th century.
Hand spinning is a favored handicraft, because it has been alive for more than 5000 years. Also,
we can infer that in some parts of the world, hand spinning is still alive. In the ancient kind of
method, spinning involved cluster of animal hairs and plant fibers were rolled down using hand
and additional cluster was included till a good length of spun fiber was acquired. After that
fiber will be connected to a stone, which is twisted in circles till the thread is adequately twirled
against the stone. And then this process will repeat to produce more products.
Another method is to use a spinning thread by the help of a spindle. Spindle is straight stick,
which is of 12 inches, where the thread will be twisted around the stick. The stick will be having
a division at the top where the thread will be fixed. And then a bone is attached at the top. A
cluster of fiber will be kept in the left hand and using the right hand the fibers will be dragged
out to a specific length. Then the end will be closed safely inside the division, on the top of the
spindle. Slightly spindle is moved. The twisted thread is rounded on the top of the spindle. A
new cluster of the fiber will be dragged out and the spindle is moved again, the thread rounded
on the spindle. This process is repeated. In ancient period, small families needed threads to
make their own cloths which caused the women started to engage in spinning activities. The
word “spinster” which means unmarried woman was originated from this practice. The
spinning wheel was introduced in Europe only in the late Middle Ages/Early Renaissance. The
drop spindle was the equipment used for spinning the threads for producing fabrics and clothes.
The first people to introduce the spinning practice were the nomadic tribes. They have used
stones and rocks for spinning. A main thread is spun by twisting fibers in the middle of two
fingers of a specific length, the other end of the thread will be tied around a rock. The rock will

be rotated to spin fibers. This process is still active in some places in Asia. Another tool used
for spinning tool is known as ‘hooked stick’. A drop spindle is nothing but a stake that is cut
from a branch of trees, which is used to spin the fibers by horizontal rolling of stake on the
thigh of the spinner, which will be twisted into the fibers. The first stakes will be straight, which
will naturally roll the fiber along the specific length which will enable the spinner to twist the
fibers. Ancient spinners used a stake which is having a fork attached for holding long fibers
during spinning. This stake was known as distaff which was always kept under the left arm. In
this way, spinners had adjusted the spindles in motion and fiber was fed using their right hand
(ACSM SUSTAINABILITY REPORT, 2017).

The internship was for a period of 45 days from 2 May to 15 june in alleppy co-operative
spinning mills

The Alleppey Co-operative Spinning Mills Ltd (ACSM) registered on 21 July 1981 with
number DI/793/81 and was commissioned on 30 October 1999 with a capacity of 6008
spindles. The government acquired 7.9 hectors i.e., 19.5 acres of land in Pathiyoor village,
kayamkulam in Alappuzha district with an estimated value of 26.9 lakhs rupees the project
report was prepared by all in federation of Co-operative Spinning Mills Ltd. The total cost of
the project was Rs.1136 lakhs
The mill was set up by All India Federation of Co-operative Spinning Mills Ltd, Mumbai. The
total estimated cost requirement for the mill was 1136 lakhs as per the SITRA standard. The
initial membership of the society was 34 members and registered as a public Ltd company in
the Co-operative sectors Act 1969. The board of Directors shall compete delegate the power
and duties of the Chairman, General Manager or any other officer the mill for efficient
management of the business of the mill
INDUSTRY PROFILE
The word textile was derived from the Latin word “TEXERE” which means to weave. It was
originally applied only to woven fabrics, but now a general term for fiber , yarn , and other
materials . It manufactures mainly cotton yarn and cotton cloth. Many countries of the world
have developed this industry but the largest concentrations are in six countries the USA, Japan,
U.K, China, India and Pakistan. Textile industry is the second largest employment provider
after agriculture sector. The industry has assets of rupees 900 and paid up capital of rupees 280
core or more
In the olden days the structure and the functioning pattern of these of these industries were
extremely complex. That is mainly carried out with the help of hand spinning machines in
an unorganized manner. But now as the technology started to an organized one and
resulting in a highly sophisticated and mechanized mill sector or industry in the cotton
textile
Industries now consist at 3 different categories in the organized sector. They are:-

The (WTO) has taken so many steps for uplifting this sector. In the year 1995, WTO had
renewed its MFA and adopted agreement on textiles and clothing (ATC), which states that
all quotes on textile and clothing will be removed among WTO member countries.
However, the level of exports in textiles from developing countries is increasing even if in
the presence of high tariffs and quantitative restrictions by economically developed
countries
Moreover, the role of multifunctional textiles, eco-textiles and customized textiles are
considered the future of textile industry
Most of the production happens in Asian countries. China and India are the leading
manufactures in the textile. Textile industry has different sectors like jute ,yarn ,apparel ,
clothing and garment. Each country has its specification in respective sectors.
Coming to India, India is large manufacture of yarn. China for silk yarn and so on
The Indian textile industry is a vertically integrated which covers a large amount of
activities ranging from production of its own raw materials namely, cotton, jute, silk, and
wool to providing to the consumers high value added products such as fabrics and garments.
India also produces large varieties of synthetic and man-made fiber such as filament and
spam yarns from polyester, viscose, nylon and acrylic which are used to manufacture fabric
and garments. The textile sector plays a significant role in Indian economy by contributing
to the Gross Domestic Product, generating employment and earning foreign exchange. An
estimated 35 million people are directly employed in the Indian Textile Industry, which
contributes to 4% of GDP and 21% of the total export earnings.

2.1 COMPANY PROFILE
Alleppey Co-operative Spinning Mills registered on July 21, with registration number
D1/7934/81 commissioned on October 31, 1999 with a capacity of 6000 spindles. The
Government acquired 7.9 hectors i.e. , 19.5 acres of land Pathiyoor village, in Kayamkulam in
Alappuzha District with an estimated value of 26.9 lakhs
This mill was set up by all the India federation of Co-operative Spinning Mills Ltd Bombay.
The total estimated cost requirement for the mill was 1136 lakhs & functions as per the SITRA
(South Indian Textile Research Association) standard
The initial membership of the society was 34 members & registered as a public Ltd company
in the co-operative sector & registered under Kerala Co-operative Societies Act 1969. The
Hand loom Director , managing director of Tex fed, General Manager of mill & finance
manager. The board of directors shall complete to delegate the power and duties of chairman,
general manager or any other officer the mill for efficient management of the business of the
mill.

The textile industry is divided into different sector. They are National Textile Co-operative
(NTC), Kerala state Textile Co-operative (KSTC) Kerala State Co-operative Federation
Limited (TEXFED) and private sector.
TEXFED was established during 1992 with the objective to plan, advice and co-ordinate, assist,
monitor, supervise, setup, manage and to facilitate the working of the organization. The co-
operative textile units in the state are entrusted affiliated or leased to the federation or owned
by the federation so as to arrange for the, manufacturing of all textile products dealing in and
supply of all textile machinery, equipment, raw materials, consumable stores, spares etc.
At present in the Alleppey Co-operative spinning mills there are 17 machines. The capacity of
the machine is 25000 spindles which make up a total of spindle
In the Alleppy Co-operative spinning mills has about 230 labours at present. In this 230 labours
120 women and 110 men. Women were allowed to take 2 day leave in a week & in the case of
men they are allowed to take 1 day leave in a week. Both of them are given separate rest
rooms& canteen facilities are also provided in the mill itself with cheap rate. And other benefit
which the workers enjoyed inside the mill are provident fund, ESI, night allowance etc.
Raw materials being used are cotton taken from the flower & processed to convert it to yarn.
Raw materials are purchased mainly from Andhra Pradesh, Tamil Nadu, and Maharashtra etc.

Yarn produced here is of different verities based upon the count which is used to measure its
quality such as 40’s, 44’s 64’s possesses the highest demand in the market. The product of

storage in Mumbai these products are transferred to agents present. In Mumbai that is ACSM
products are marketed through “Deport marketing,”Deport marketing means the agents act as
intermediaries. ACSM provided 1.5% of commission to these agents they sell the yarn on the
basis of the present market value. The agent they sell the yarn on the basis of the present market
value. The agent purchase yarn The target market of ACSM is the Mumbai market from there
those products are from the mill and provides this yarn to the concerned parties. The payment
is made only after the selling procedure is complete.ACSM has 2 agents in Mumbai; they are
Ramalingalkaland Nandal brothers and sathyam enterprises. ACSM market their product to
certain parts of Kerala like Kottayam, Eranakulam and Alappuzha. The cotton purchased from
various state of India such as Punjab, Maharashtra etc. It is mainly done by inviting quotation
through online. The main products of ACSM are carded yarn, combed yarn and hank yarn.
Among this the combed yarn possess the highest demand in the market.

Human resource department
The responsibilities of a human resource manager fall into three major areas, staffing, employee
compensation and benefits, and defining/designing work. Essentially, the purpose of HRM is
to maximize the productivity of an organization by optimizing the effectiveness of its
employees. An HR department is tasked with maximizing employee productivity and
protecting the company from any issues that may arise within the workforce. HR
responsibilities include compensation and benefits, recruitment, firing, and keeping up to date
with any laws that may affect the company and its employees.

Finance department is headed by finance manager and supported by the assistant finance officer
and cashier. The department is fully computerized and hence manpower is limited since all

Purchase department
The main functions of Operations Procurement include the purchase of all items other than raw
material, for the entire Group. Operations department performs all the operations for the
processes. The raw material for production is brought from farmers from various places. Then
it is transported to the plant for processing. After processing the products are also transferred
to the marketing section. All the operations for the synthesis of products and maintenance of
the plant is done by operations department. Thus, this department plays a key role in the
organization

2.3 VISION AND MISSION
2.3.1 VISION
To produce the highest quality fine and super fine count cotton yarn in the world and to
provide the best in the customer service in the industry

2.3.2 MISSION
Mission is the basic constituent of the company it does not change with the time rather all
the operation of the company are for the fulfillment of the mission. It is the contribution of
the company to the society.
The mission of the Alleppey Co-operative Spinning Mill Limited is to improve the quality
of the product as well as to develop and to manufacture the product according to the
demand.
In ACSM the yarn is produced from the cotton which is extracted from the fruit of cotton
plant which are produced at various parts of nation. The production process includes the
process of converting raw materials and other usable and saleable output as final finished
product which in return in produced in profit for the organization. Yarns are made of a
number of piles, each ply being a single spun yarn. These single piles of yarn are twisted
in the opposite direction together to make a thicker yarn. Depending on the direction of this
final twist, the yarn will be known as a s-twist or z-twist. For a single ply, the direction of
the final twist is the same as it original twist. Two main type yarn are:
1. Filament yarn
2. Textured yarn
Filament yarn consists of the filament fiber twisted together. Thicker monofilaments are
typically used for industrial purpose rather than fabric production or decoration. Silk is a
natural filament, and synthetic filament yarn are used to produced in silk like effect.
Textured yarn are made by a process of air texturizing, which combines multiple filament

YARN
Yarn consists of strands of materials twisted together. Each strand is made up of fiber, all
shorter than the piece of yarn that the form. These short fiber are spun into longer filament
to make the yarn.
The characteristics of spun yarn depend on the amount of twist given to the fiber during
spinning is the process of creating yarn from various raw materials. The characteristics of
yarn also depend on the material used, fiber length and alignment and the quality of fiber
used.
A fairly high degree of twist produce strong yarn a low degree of twist produced softer,
mere lustrous yarn and a very tight twist produces crepe yarn. Yarn is also classified by
their number of parts. A single yarn is made from a group of filament fiber twisted together.
Play yarn are made by twisting two or more single yarn. Cord yarns made by twisting
together two or more play yarn.

number of natural or synthetic fiber. These natural fiber come from plants, animals, and
minerals. Synthetic fiber have strength, artificial luster and fire retardant. Every fifty
percent of spun is made from cotton. Textured crimped or bulked yarn comprised one half
of the total spun. Textured yarn has higher volume due to physical, chemical or het
treatments. Crimped yarn is made of thermoplastic fiber of deformed shape. Bulked yarn
is formed from fiber that are inherently bulky and cannot be closely packed.
MAKING OF CLOTH
In the process of making of cloth mainly there are four steps. It starts from making fiber
material with ends in fashion designing. Step of making clothes are,
There are mainly three types of fiber. First one, natural fiber, it includes cotton coir, jute
etc. Cotton is derived from the Arabic word ‘qwtin’. Cotton is generally called white gold
pr daughter of sun. It is cultivated in Deccan plateau. Black soil is mostly suited for the
cotton cultivation. It is mainly cultivated in Punjab, Maharashtra and Gujarat. Coir is the
second natural fiber. It is the husk of coconut. The process of separating husk from the
coconut is called retting. Jute is a product of natural fiber and is the skin of tree, from they
collect fiber.
The second type of the fiber is semi synthetic fiber. Rayon is the main example for this
fiber. The main rayon company in India is Birla industries and in Kerala. It is Perumbavoor
rayon. The third type of fiber is synthetic or artificial fiber, polyester and polymathic is the
main artificial fiber. It is mainly produced by the combination of products of petroleum,
coal, air, water and pulp by giving high pressure. Reliance industries, JK Synthetics and
Sriram fibers are the main companies producing artificial fiber.
Making of cloth:

By the yarn obtained in the second stage is used for the production of cloths. There are
mainly four methods of making cloth. They are Weaving, Knitting, Felting, Knotting. Dress
making and fashion designing:
Last step is making of dress. Fashion designing is the most important step in
dress making since all receipts and payment computerized. All the purchasing work are

2.5 FINANCIALS
Spinning mill where yarn is produced as per the customer’s requirement implemented ISO
9002 and ISO 9003 models. ISO 9001 model is more appropriate for mills producing special
yarn and fabric for industrial application where the fabric have to be engineered to meet very
requirement. Here in ACSM both these ISO 9000 standard are being applied with respect to
the production of yarn.
A SWOT analysis is a structure planning method used to evaluate the strength, weakness,
opportunities and thread in a project. A SWOT analysis can be carried out for a product, place,
industry or person. In the SWOT analysis the strength, weakness, opportunities and threads of
Alleppey Co-operative Spinning Mills Ltd Kareelakulangara is analyzed and noticed

KAREELAKULANGARA The HR department was allotted. The whole internship program
was about overall organizational study and to assist departmental individuals throughout their
work. The officer to which I was supposed to report everyday was Mrs. ASHA General
manager in ALLEPPY CO-OPERATIVE SPINNING MILLS. I was able to work in all the
major functions of the organization. The various marketing tactics taken by the department, the
various administrative works handled by the organization etc. was studied.

The objectives of my internship was to get familiarize with the functions and department of the

5.1 CONCLUSION
The company should be promptly responding to any indications of disinterest and should make
sure that they truly care for their customers. Also, the company should be willing to negotiate
with those customers who show certain sign of inactivity. In review this internship at
ALLEPPY CO-OPERATIVE SPINNING MILLS KAREELAKULANGARA facilitates it has
been an excellent and rewarding experience. It was a general study regarding all functions and
different sectors such as manufacturing sectors production sector finance sector etc. at last
customer satisfaction. The study helped me to understand that how to the company product and
how they evaluate the product and also the production process. The study gives me an
opportunity to experience and improve my knowledge about the production process.
