Mr. Perera participated with an export exhibition in Germany and he met Mr. Nimal who was
residing in Germany and running a Catering Service at the time. Mr. Nimal had strong contacts
with most of the tea importers in Germany and his intention was to come back to Sri Lanka to
settle down. As this was a golden opportunity for him to find a job in Sri Lanka, he impressed
Mr. Perera that he could develop business in Germany, if he is offered a job at
Seahorse Shipping Ltd. Mr. Perera was pleased to hire him and requested him to send an email
indicating a list of importers known to him in Germany with whom he could develop the
business. Further he mentioned that if he was offered a job at Seahorse Shipping Ltd., he would
be able to ship 20 containers to Germany per month.
Three months later Mr. Nimal came to Sri Lanka for good. He was offered an employment, a
permanent contract with six months probation at Seahorse Shipping Ltd. as the Business
Development Manager. His monthly salary was Rs. 125,000/=, vehicle allowance Rs. 50,000/=,
fuel allowance Rs. 30,000/= and telephone call limit was Rs. 25,000/= (IDD). Most of his time
was spending on the telephone conversations to his clients in Germany. After three months, Mr.
Perera called Mr. Nimal for a meeting and to evaluate the progress. They found that Mr. Nimal
had not imported a single container to Germany during his first three months. Mr. Perera was not
pleased over the performances of Mr. Nimal and warned him verbally. Further he gave another
two months for him to perform. After five months, Mr. Perera evaluated the performances of Mr.
Nimal and found he had not sent a single container. When Mr. Perera questioned Mr. Nimal as to
why he had nor performed, Mr. Nimal’s reply was “I tried my best but I couldn’t”. The Total
Cost of Mr. Nimal to the company was Rs. 300,000/= per month.
