Legend
The Legend of Mount Batur
A long time ago, there lived on the island of Bali a giant-like
creature named Kbo Iwo. The people of Bali used to say that Kbo
Iwo was everything, a destroyer as well as a creator. He was
satisfied with the meal, but this meant for the Balinese people
enough food for a thousand men.

Difficulties arose when for the first time the barns were almost
empty and the new harvest was still a long way off. This made Kbo
Iwo wild with great anger. In his hunger, he destroyed all of the
houses and even the temples. It made the Balinese turn to rage.

So, they came together to plan steps to oppose this powerful giant
by using his stupidity. They asked Kbo Iwo to build them a very
deep well, and rebuild all the houses and temples he had
destroyed. After they fed Kbo Iwo, he began to dig a deep hole.

One day he had eaten too much, he fell asleep in the hole. The
oldest man in the village gave a sign, and the villagers began to
throw the limestone they had collected before into the hole. The
limestone made the water inside the hole boiling. Kbo Iwo was
buried alive. Then the water in the well rose higher and higher until
at last it overflowed and formed Lake Batur. The mound of earth
dug from the well by Kbo Iwo is known as Mount Batur.
Personal
Cooking Competition
Experience

When I was in Senior High School, my best friend and I

joined the cooking competition in our school. It was
our very first time to join any contest. And it was our
first time cooking by ourselves. Orientation

There were fifty participants in the competition and

the parents of those students were also there to
support their kids during the contest.

We already decided that we are going to make

fried noodles. So I started the process by peeling
off the shallot and garlic. After chopping them, I
put them on a small plate. Complication

My friend sliced red chillis and then put them

together on the same plate. When everything was
prepared, I started the cooking process.

My friend put the frying pan right on the stove. Then I placed
a tablespoon of margarine on that pan before turning on
the stove. When the margarine starts melting, I add the chilis
into the pan.

And then my friend whisked the chili using a spatula. When I

finally smelled the aroma of chili and margarine, I added all Resolution
spices on the plate and oyster sauce into the pan.

Next, my friend whisked everything in the pan together for

10 seconds only. And then I added a plate of noodles into
the pan. My friend kept whisking everything together until
everything was perfectly mixed.

At the end, we put a small amount of salt and soy sauce into
the pan and then mix the noodles one more time. We
served the fried noodles on a large plate. I added a sunny
side up and some crackers.
Folktale Golden Cucumber
Orientation Long long time ago, there was a farmer couple. They were staying in Orientation
a village near a forest. They lived happily.

Unfortunately, they hadn’t had any children yet Complication 1

Every day they prayed to God for a child. One day a giant passed their home. He
heard what they were praying. Then the giant gave them a cucumber seed. “Plant
this seed, then you’ll get a daughter,” said the giant. “Thank you, Giant,” said the
couple. “But in one condition, in her 17-th birthday, you must give her to me,” said
the Giant. The couple wanted a child so much that they agreed without thinking first. Resolution 1
Then the couple planted the cucumber seed. Each day they took care of the growing
plant so carefully. Months later, a golden cucumber grew from the plant. The
cucumber was getting heavier and bigger each day. When it was ripe, they picked it.
Carefully they cut out the cucumber and how surprised were they when they found a
beautiful baby inside. They were so happy. They named the baby Timun Mas, or
Golden Cucumber.

Years were passing by and Timun Mas had grown into a beautiful girl. Her parents were
very proud of her. But their happiness turned to fear when her 17th birthday came. The Complication 2
giant returned to ask for their promise. He was going to take Timun Mas away.

The farmer tried to be calm. “Just a moment, please. Timun Mas is playing. My wife
will call her,” he said. Then the farmer came to his daughter. “My child, take this,” as
he was giving her a little bag to Timun Mas. “This will help you from the giant. Now,

run as fast as you can,” he ordered. So Timun Mas ran away.

The couple was very sad about her leaving. But they didn’t want the giant to eat Timun
Mas. Meanwhile, the giant had been waiting for too long. He became impatient.
Somehow he knew that the couple had lied to him. So he destroyed their house and ran
for Timun Mas. The giant was chasing Timun Mas and he was getting closer and closer. Complication 3
Timun Mas then took a handful of salt from her little bag. She spread out the salt behind
her. Suddenly a wide sea appeared between them. The giant had to swim to reach her.

Timun Mas was still running, but now the giant almost caught her. Then she took some
chilly and threw them to the giant. The chilly suddenly grew into some trees and Resolution 3
trapped the giant. The trees grew some thorns as sharp as a knife. The giant screamed
painfully. At the mean time, Timun Mas could escape again.

But the giant was very strong. Again he almost caught Timun Mas. So Timun Mas took
the third magic stuff, the cucumber seeds. She threw the seeds and suddenly they Complication 4
became a wide cucumber field. The giant was very tired and hungry so he ate those fresh
cucumbers. He ate too much that he felt sleepy and fell asleep soon.

Timun Mas kept on running as fast as she could. But soon she was very tired herself.
To make things worse, the giant had woken up! Timun Mas was so scared. Desperately
she then threw her last weapon, terasi (a kind of shrimp pasta). IT did a miracle again. Resolution 4
The pasta became a big swamp. The giant fell into it but his hands almost reached
Timun Mas. Suddenly the lake pulled him to the bottom. The giant panicked and he
couldn’t breathe. At last he drowned.
Timun Mas was very relieved. She was safe now. Then she returned to her parents’
house. Her parents were of course very happy to see their daughter safe and sound.

True Friends
Once upon a time, there were two close friends who were walking
through the forest together. They knew that anything dangerous
can happen any time in the forest. So they promised each other
that they would always be together in any case of danger.

Suddenly, they saw a large bear getting closer toward them. One of
them climbed a nearby tree at once. But unfortunately the other
one did not know how to climb up the tree. So being led by his
common sense, he lay down on the ground breathless and
pretended to be a dead man.

The bear came near the one who was lying on the ground. It smelt
in his ears, and slowly left the place because the bears do not want
to touch the dead creatures. After that, the friend on the tree came
down and asked his friend that was on the ground, “Friend, what
did the bear whisper into your ears?” The other friend replied, “Just
now the bear advised me not to believe a false friend”.

Moral of the Story – A true friend in need is a friend indeed.

Fable The Ant and the Dove
One hot day, an ant was seeking for some water. After
walking around for a moment, she came to a spring. To reach
the spring, she had to climb up a blade of grass. While
making her way up, she slipped and fell unintentionally into
the water.

She could have sunk if a dove up a nearby tree had not seen
her. Seeing that the ant was in trouble, the dove quickly put
off a leaf from a tree and dropped it immediately into the
water near the struggling ant. Then the ant moved towards
the leaf and climbed up there. Soon it carried her safely to
dry ground.

Not long after at that, there was a hunter nearby who was
throwing out his net towards the dove, hoping to trap it in

Guessing what he should do, the ant quickly bit him on the
heel. Feeling the pain, the hunter dropped his net and the
dove flew away quickly from this net.

Science Fiction

NIGHTFALL by Isaac Asimov (1941)

Voted by the SFWA as the greatest sci-fi short story of all

time. A classic tale of wonderment, paranoia, insanity,
and introspection. It masterfully dives into one’s deepest
fears and opens the mind to the wonderous possibilities
just outside our view. There is also a novel version of this
classic; how-ever I would recommend the short story
over the novel. Do not miss this one! Asimov is a
wonderful writer and this story brings together the very
best spirit of sci-fi.

The coachman told him that he was directed to Toyland, where the kids could do whatever
they wanted.

Arriving at the sea, he dived an dived till he found his father in the belly of the whale. But how
to get out of there? So he lit a fire and the smoke made the whale sneeze so strong that, she
opened its mouth. Pinocchio and Geppetto escaped on a raft. The puppet helped his father to
swim in the middle of the waves: and they finally reached the shore! But as soon as they
arrived Pinocchio, for the great effort fainted. Grief-stricken, Geppetto took him home. The
Blue Fairy, awoke him and, as promised, rewarded his courage and his goodness, by
transforming Pinocchio into a real boy

“Pinocchio, come back!” Jiminy Cricket ran after him. But the puppet would not listen to him.
There Pinocchio met a new boy Candlewick. He soon discovered that in Toyland the lazy and
rude kids were turned into donkeys. Pinocchio ran desperately, followed by his faithful friend.
Jiminy Cricket Together, then returned to the house of Geppetto , but they found none. “Who
knows what l happened to him!” At that moment, a dove brought them a message: while
Geppetto was looking for Pinocchio everywhere, he was swallowed by a whale and now he
was his prisoner. “I want to save him!” decided the puppet.

The Resolution at Pinocchio came with a confrontation of truth. In the past he was
branded as a boy with every lie told. The most dramatic change he experienced was
his transformation into a real human being with the truth.
