 Functions of the passive voice
The passive voice is used to show interest in the person or object
that experiences an action rather than the person or object that
performs the action.
the most important thing or person becomes the subject
of the sentence.
Passive voice is used when the focus is on the action
Form of Passive : Subject + finite form of to be + Past Participle
Passive voice adalah kalimat yang subjeknya dikenai suatu pekerjaan
atau tindakan dari kata kerjanya, artinya bukan subjek tersebut
yang melakukan suatu aksi.

1. Avoid Blame (Menghindari Kesalahan)

kalimat pasif pembicara tidak wajib untuk dicantumkan.

Kalimat pasif: Bad advice was given to Sasya.

Kalimat aktif: Fadhli gave bad advice to Sasya.

Subjek pada kalimat aktif di atas adalah Fadhli,

sedangkan penerima aksinya adalah Sasya.
Ketika ia diubah menjadi kalimat pasif, maka 'Fadhli' tak
lagi wajib untuk dicantumkan.

2. Menunjukkan Nada Netral dan Objektif

pembicaraan yang tidak memberikan kesan mendukung

pada satu pihak.

Compensation was offered by all delays airline.

(Kompensasi ditawarkan oleh semua maskapai
penerbangan yang mengalami penundaan.)

3. Memberikan Penekanan Pada Suatu Hal
Untuk lebih fokus pada sebuah objek

Twenty-five thousand dollars was stolen.

(Uang 25 ribu dolar telah dicuri.)

Penerima aksi dari kalimat tersebut adalah uang dalam jumlah

yang banyak, bukan siapa yang mencurinya.

4. Tepat Digunakan Ketika Aktor Tidak Penting,
Tidak Jelas, atau Tidak Diketahui
Subjek dalam kalimat pasif bisa dihilangkan saat suatu tindakan dilakukan
oleh 'aktor' yang masih bersifat belum pasti atau bahkan unimportant.

Salted eggs were soaked in salt for one week.

(Telur asin direndam garam selama satu minggu.)

Dalam kalimat tersebut, subjek tidak penting untuk diketahui, karena proses
perendaman telur asin merupakan gagasan utama yang ingin disampaikan.
