SWAPO’s Policy on Education in Exile: During Namibia's struggle for independence,

SWAPO established educational programs for Namibians in exile to prepare them for the
challenges of a future independent Namibia. This policy encompassed various levels of
education:

 Basic Education: SWAPO recognized the need for foundational skills, offering basic literacy
and numeracy education to refugees and exiles. Basic education provided a strong foundation for
further learning.
 Secondary Education: SWAPO aimed to offer secondary education with a broader curriculum.
This education aimed to equip students with a more comprehensive skill set, preparing them for
higher education or vocational training.
 Tertiary and Higher Education: SWAPO understood the importance of a well-educated
populace in post-independence Namibia. They provided scholarships for students to pursue
higher education abroad, ensuring a pool of skilled professionals in various fields.

 History of Education: The history of education is the study of educational systems, practices,
and theories throughout history. It explores how education has evolved, the societal and cultural
influences on education, and the impact of educational developments on societies.
 Comparative Education: Comparative education involves analyzing and comparing different
educational systems, policies, and practices across various countries or regions. The goal is to
gain insights into the strengths and weaknesses of different approaches to education.

3. Contributions of History of Education and Comparative Education to Teacher

Education/Training:

 History of Education: Knowledge of the history of education helps teachers understand the
evolution of educational theories and practices. It provides insights into how educational
philosophies have developed over time, allowing teachers to critically evaluate current methods
and make informed decisions about teaching strategies.
 Comparative Education: Comparative education exposes teachers to diverse educational
systems and approaches. By studying various systems, teachers can identify innovative teaching
methods and adapt them to their own classrooms. This approach encourages teachers to think
creatively and implement effective practices.

4. Contribution of Western and African Philosophers to Education:

 Western Philosophers: Western philosophers like John Dewey emphasized experiential

learning, where education is hands-on and practical. Jean-Jacques Rousseau's ideas about child
development influenced modern concepts of child-centered education.
 African Philosophers: African philosophers like Kwame Nkrumah stressed the importance of
education for national development and liberation from colonialism. Their ideas have shaped the
educational policies of many African nations, focusing on education as a tool for empowerment
and self-determination.

5. Role of Traditional/Indigenous Education:

 Cultural Preservation: Indigenous education preserves cultural traditions, values, and

knowledge. It ensures the continuation of languages, rituals, and practices unique to each
community.
 Community Integration: Traditional education fosters a sense of community and belonging.
Learning often occurs within the community, allowing for the transmission of knowledge
through interactions with elders and community members.
 Holistic Learning: Indigenous education often takes a holistic approach, integrating various
aspects of life such as spirituality, environment, and social relationships. This approach promotes
a well-rounded understanding of the world.
 Local Knowledge: Indigenous education imparts knowledge about local ecosystems, natural
resources, and sustainable practices. It teaches practical skills necessary for survival and
harmony within the local environment.
 Challenges: However, traditional education might not always align with modern needs, and
there's a need to balance traditional knowledge with contemporary education to address present-
day challenges.

Each of these topics holds significant importance in shaping educational practices, policies, and
philosophies worldwide.
