What is the student learning goal(s) for this lesson idea? (Add 1 to 2 sentences stating the learning
outcome you would expect students to achieve using the technology tool selected. This goal will be
shared with students so make it clear, concise, and kid-friendly.)
Using my observations, research and vocabulary terms I will be able to communicate a model representing
the patterns of the moon phases.

How do you plan to implement this lesson and integrate the technology? Check all that apply:

☐ Teacher-led: There is no student voice and choice in the activities. Students are guided by the
teacher's direction and expectations. Learning activities are assigned to the
student and mostly practice based.

☒ Student-Led: Students are given voice and choice in the activities. They may select the topic
of learning and/or determine the tool they will use to meet the learning goal. The
teacher facilitates the learning as the students direct their own learning processes.

☐ Problem-based (Real world problems) and/or Publishable: Students are solving problems
and completing projects to demonstrate their learning. Additionally, the projects can be shared
outside of the classroom. (Note: This objective could be reached by displaying the project on the
school’s morning newscast, posting the project to the classroom blog, presenting it to another
class, or publishing it via an outside source.)

Lesson idea implementation:

Students will be tracking the moon phases eat night for a month before the lesson is implemented.
As the teacher I will use these observations to guide questions in a class discussion. I will initiate it by
asking a vague question that students can answer in different ways. “When you look at the sky at night what
of you see?” I will gear the conversation towards the moon and I will bring up the homework they have been
doing the past month. “What did we observe of the moon the past month?” We will then explore their
observations, Why are there so many moon phases? Do these phases repeat? How do you think they repeat?
how often? Students will have the opportunity to explore the information they found of the moon. They can
analyze the data and interpret it to make more sense to them, they can ask questions to grasp a better
understanding. They will have this opportunity to talk to the entire class, peers around and the teacher. The
next part of the lesson will have a lesson with a quick video to capture their interests. We will then have a
class discussion to discuss it all. We will use this time to emphasize the vocabulary needed. We will go over
vocabulary- New moon: Invisible moon because it is lined up with the sun Crescent: Less than half the moon
Quarter: Half the moon Gibbous: More than half the moon Full: Entire moon is visible Students will drive this
discussion and I will act as a guide to ensure the conversation is on track. To check where they are at we will
complete a quizzizz to check their understanding before they move onto the model. They then will have the
opportunity to work individually or in pairs to complete a model to show their knowledge. They can utilize
their school laptops to help further research the topic. They will be able to o complete a poster, paper,
PowerPoint or video representing their understanding of the moon phases.

Managing student learning:

The lesson is broken into three to four days to avoid information overload and ensure enough time
will be able to complete entire lesson and model. There are many opportunities for learners to
converse about the topic in class discussion and when creating the model. I will be able to call on
learners to share their observations and understanding, they can intentionally volunteer and I will
randomly select students for reengagement and interactive purposes. (If I notice learners may be off
task it can redirect them)
Universal Design for Learning (UDL):
The learners being able to interact in class discussion and with the video to introduce the mini lesson
which will engage them by capturing there interest and asking thought provoking questions. The
students are offered a variety of options to express their understanding of the topic and many
platforms of technology they can utilize for their research. Students will be able to understand the
what of learning in a few ways, with a video, class discussion and the PowerPoint present during the
mini lesson along with the opportunity to discuss information with peers.
Reflective Practice:
Since there is a multitude of flexibility and use of technology students will be able to build a better
understanding. I look forward to seeing how creative the students will be with their module. This is

because they have a lot of room to be able to make this project their own and many different forms
of how they can do so.
