Lesson Idea Name: Phrases of the Moon

Grade Level/Content Area: Forth

Content Standard Addressed: S4E2. Obtain, evaluate, and communicate information to model the
effects of the position and motion of the Earth and the moon in relation to the sun as observed from
the Earth.

ISTE Technology Standard Addressed:  What would you like students to know and be
Empowered Learner-1. 1d: Students use able to do by the end of this lesson: By the end

learning in a variety of ways. moon phases.

What is the student learning goal(s) for this lesson idea?

The outcome of the lesson is for students to explain that moon has different phases. Student will
recognize the different moon depending on what phase the moon is.

Bloom’s Taxonomy Level(s):

Creating

Having students analyze a model of the repeating pattern of the moon will help student observe
how the moon cycles.

How do you plan to implement this lesson and integrate the technology? Check all that apply:

☐ Teacher-led: There is no student voice and choice in the activities. Students are guided by
teacher direction and expectations. Learning activities are assigned to the
student and mostly practice based.

X Student-Led: Students are given voice and choice in the activities. They may select the topic
of learning and/or determine the tool they will use to meet the learning goal. The
teacher facilitates the learning as the students direct their own learning processes.

X Problem-based and/or Publishable: Students are solving problems
and completing projects to demonstrate their learning. Additionally, the projects can be shared
outside of the classroom.

Lesson idea implementation:

I will begin the class by having prior knowledge questions about the moon phase. The questions will
be based on if students have observed the moon before. I will call on different students to share
their observations on the moon. The second question will be if they recognize any differences when

they observe the moon. The second question however I will allow 30 seconds of discussion with
another peer. We then will move to online discussion on Padlet. On Padlet students will answer
what they know about the moon cycle. Once all students submit questions students and teacher can
see the comments posted. I will start the open discussion by going over the responses and allowing
students to add on what they know. After the group discussion we will watch a small video on moon
phases. When the video is done students will have individual learning time on Padlet. Student will be
asked to reflect on what they have learned and submit a small response question. Finally, students
will be able to work on Kahoot helping them to be engage learning about the moon phases. Kahoot
will help me to be able to assess the knowledge of my students. When the have completed the
Kahoot student will get in groups of two and make a model of the moon phase.
Managing student learning: I will be using the strategy volunteers to share student stories on
observing the moon. When a student shares a personal story, they are co-engaging in their learning.
I want students to be able to connect with each other based on similar experiences. Hearing a friend
sharing will encourage others to share or spark a memory too. Another strategy I will be using is chat
time. I will give students to share with the person beside them for 30 seconds what they know about
the moon. I will be using Kahoot to help with passive to active social learners. Everyone kid will
participle and share their answer.
Universal Design for Learning (UDL):
The lesson plan offers student support engagement, representation, and action components of
Universal Design of Learning. Student are offered to work with others, a whole group and
individually. It helps provide engagement for the students who are more reserved and shyer. It
allows the timid students to share their thought on Padlet. Students are experiencing engagement
by using different technology tools to learn and being asses on. Students who worked best with
others are being represented when they are allowed to work together to create and design a model
of the moon phases. The lesson also helps to represent student who prefer to be more hands on
with creating a physical model of the moon phases. Action is supported in the lesson when students
are allowed to be able to learn as they go. Students are asked about prior knowledge but with
watching videos and submitting their responses student are being active in their learning.
Reflective Practice:
I believe this lesson idea will allow students to adventure technology in a new way. The lesson plan
gives student the freedom to take ownership of their learning. The goal is for students to work on
Padlet at their pace. On Padlet the student can start and end in a different place. This allows
students to be able to learn by choosing the order they complete their work. I look forward to
helping student use new technology tools by using different platforms to help them learn.
