CONNAUGHT BRIDGE POWER STATION

1.0 INTRODUCTION

1.1 Operational Philosophy

The function of the Emergency Diesel Generator (EDG) is to provide electrical power
to the Security Emergency Board (Emergency MCC). The Security Emergency Board
(as shown in FIGURE 1) in turns provides electrical power to the 415V BME Board
which supplies to the Gas/Steam Turbine auxiliaries (mainly the lube oil pumps and
the seall oil pumps and to other Combined Cycle Plant Auxiliaries in case of station
total power failure. This ensures safe shutdown of the gas turbine and steam turbine
up to turning gear operation.

FIGURE 1: SECURITY EMERGENCY BOARD HMI AT CCR

The EDG can be operated from any of the following locations:

1. EDG AGC Panel

2. EDG GENSET EMERGENCY START Switch (located by the EDG)
3. Security Emergency Board HMI (at CCR)

Operation Procedure–Emergency Diesel Generator Page 3 of 30

CONNAUGHT BRIDGE POWER STATION

Manual EDG start and stop can be performed from the EDG AGC Panel as well as at
the EDG GENSET EMERGENCY START Switch. However, only manual start is possible
from the Security Emergency Board HMI.

Automatic Starting of EDG

The EDG must be selected to AUTO (via the selector switch at the EDG AGC Panel)
and its circuit breaker to REMOTE to enable automatic starting of the EDG. Please
also note that the MCCA Incoming Circuit Breaker from EDG (10BMA02.A1) must
always be CLOSED during normal operation of the plant.

Automatic starting of the EDG will be initiated when all of the following conditions
are present:
i. 415V Emergency MCCA Bus Voltage < 83V
ii. 415 V Unit PCA (or Unit Auxiliary Board 1, UAB1) Bus Voltage < 83V
iii. 415V Emergency MCCB Bus Voltage < 83V
iv. 415 V Unit PCB (or Unit Auxiliary Board 2, UAB2) Bus Voltage < 83V

FIGURE 2: EDG AUTOMATIC STARTING SEQUENCE

The following are the sequence of events that follows (refer to FIGURE 2):
1. MCCA Incoming Circuit Breaker (10BMA01.A1) and MCCB Incoming
Circuit Breaker (10BMB01.A1) automatically opens
2. EDG automatically starts

Operation Procedure–Emergency Diesel Generator Page 4 of 30

CONNAUGHT BRIDGE POWER STATION

3. EDG Generator Circuit Breaker (GCB) closes to synchronise EDG to MCCA

Board when the following conditions are satisfied:
i. EDG frequencey must be between 49.8 and 50.2 Hz
ii. 415V Emergency MCCA Bus Voltage must be less than 124V

Shutting Down EDG

The EDG can be shutdown and placed back on standby when the followings are
established:

i. Unit PCA (UAB1 Board) Bus Voltage is between 395 and 435V
ii. Unit PCA (UAB1 Board) Outgoing Breaker to MCCA (10BFA03.A1) is closed
iii. MCCA Incoming Circuit Breaker (10MBA01.A1) is manually closed by
switching ON the DG MAINS BACK SYN (CLOSE QF2) Sub Loop Control (SLC)
iv. 415V MCCA Bus Voltage is between 373 and 456V
v. Emergency MCCA Incoming 415V Circuit Breaker from EDG (10BMA02.A1) is
closed

The EDG can be either be shutdown at local (by initiating EDG Shutdown Button at
the EDG AGC Panel or turning the GENSET EMERGENCY START Switch to OFF) or from
remote (by initiating the EDG Start Mode Stop). The EDG will be then shutdown as
follows:

 EDG Generator Circuit Breaker will open

 EDG will continue to run at full speed no load for 3 minutes before shutting
down

1.2 Limitations

1. The engine must have adequate oil pressure within 15 seconds after starting
2. Idle the engine 3 to 5 minutes before operating with load

Operation Procedure–Emergency Diesel Generator Page 5 of 30

CONNAUGHT BRIDGE POWER STATION

2.0 SYSTEM START-UP

2.1 Pre-operational Instruction

2.1.1 Prerequisites

A. The battery is fully charged

B. Daily Fuel Tank level is normal.
C. Cooling System is available
D. EDG Protection is ON
E. No fault signal
F. No fault alarm

2.1.2 Precautions

A. Ensure that the generator set room is properly ventilated.

B. Keep hands, arms, long hair, loose clothing and jewelers away from pulleys, belts
and other moving parts.
C. Avoid contact with hot oil, hot coolant, hot exhaust gases, hot surfaces and
sharp edges and corners.
D. Wear protective clothing including gloves and safety helmet when working
around the generator set.
E. Ear protection must be worn when operating or working around an operating
generator set.
F. Do not add coolant to an overheated engine until engine has cooled. Adding
coolant to a hot engine can cause the cylinder block or cylinder heat to crack.
G. Do not remove the radiator filler cap until the coolant has cooled. Loosen the
cap slowly to relieve any excess pressure before removing the cap completely.
H. Keep the room, the floor and the generating set clean. Any spill of fuel, oil,
battery electrolyte or coolant should be cleaned up immediately.
I. Never store flammable liquids near the engine.
J. Do not smoke or allow sparks, flames or other sources of ignition around fuel or
batteries. Fuel vapours are explosive. Hydrogen gas generated by charging
batteries is also explosive.
K. Check the radiator and ensure surrounding area clean and free from
obstructions

Operation Procedure–Emergency Diesel Generator Page 6 of 30

CONNAUGHT BRIDGE POWER STATION

2.1.3 Pre-start Checklist

A. All Permit-To-Work for the system components cancelled, tags removed and
equipments safe to operate.
B. All instrumentation and annunciations are available.
C. Check the engine coolant level. The coolant level should be about 2 inches (50
mm) below the radiator cap.
D. Check engine lube oil level is normal (Not over the full mark on the dipstick)
E. Inspect quality of oil. The oil should not contain any water.
F. Make sure air filters are clean
G. All rotating equipment guards and safety devices are installed
