EXTREME ADJECTIVES
Adjectives are words that describe the qualities of something. Some adjectives in English are
gradable– that means you can have different degrees or levels of that quality, they’re called strong
adjectives or extreme adjectives. Strong adjectives are more expressive than normal adjectives and
are used with adverbs like really or absolutely.

When we want to describe something or someone as exceptional you can use a strong adjective.
Strong adjectives are words like:

NON-GRADABLE and GRADABLE adjectives

ancient old
amazing surprising
boiling hot
brilliant intelligent
deafening loud
delighted happy
excellent good
exhausted tired
fascinating interesting
filthy dirty
freezing cold
furious angry
gorgeous beautiful
starving hungry
terrifying scary
tiny small

With strong adjectives, for intensifiers we normally use:

absolutely – exceptionally – particularly – really – quite – completely

The film was absolutely awful.

He was an exceptionally brilliant child.
The food smelled really disgusting.

Really can be used with both strong and base adjectives.
