IV. DEVELOPMENT OF LESSON

A. MOTIVATION
Okay, class I want you to listen to a short
scenario; "John saw a pretty girl. He went to talk
to her. Her husband arrived. The husband hit John
on the nose."

1. What did the husband do? (Active voice is used

in the answer.)
2. What happened to John? (Passive voice is used (Answers may vary)
in the answer.)

Notice on the sentences on the board. Analyze its

difference. It tells whether it is in the form of
active or passive voice. That is what we are going
to discuss now.

Students: Okay sir!

B. PRESENTATION OF THE LESSON

Voice is the quality of a verb that shows whether
the subject is the doer or receiver of the action.
We have two special forms of verbs which are?
Student, “Passive and Active voice sir!:”

“Excellent!”
C. LESSON PROPER
The Active Voice is used to indicate that the
subject of the sentence is the doer of the action.

Let’s start with a very simple sentence.

S V O
The boy kicked the ball.

In the following sentences, note the form of the

verb. Look when the subject is doer of the action.

A student wrote the winning essay.

 Alexander Graham Bell invented the telephone.
 The chef prepared a delicious meal.

What are the subjects in the sentences?

“Student: Alexander Graham Bell, Chef”
Correct!
Observe that the subjects’ students, Alexander
Graham Bell, Chef, are the doers of the action.
Right? Now, what are the verbs used?
Yes Ms. Diaz? Student: “Wrote, invented, prepared “

Very good! Those verbs are transitive verbs with

directs objects, thus when the subject of the
sentence does the action and the verb has a direct
object, we say that the verb is in the active voice.

The Passive Voice

A verb is in the passive voice when the subject of
the sentence is acted on by the verb. For example,
“The ball was thrown by the pitcher,” the ball (the
subject) receives the action of the verb and was
thrown is in the passive voice.
What do you think the active voice of this
sentence is?
Yes Ms. Fajardo?
Sir it would be “The pitcher threw the ball.”
Class, bear in mind that passive voice is always
formed by using some form of to be as a helping
verb and adding a past participle.

What is past participle?

Yes Ms. Gonzalez?
Sir, it is the part of a verb, created by adding -ed, -
d, or -t to the base form of a regular verb.
Very good!

Let us have an exercise. Identify the voice of the

verb in each sentence.

1. Raul presented an interesting report. Student’s answers:

2. Baseball was played by Joseph. 1. active
3. Martin removed the old paint. 2. passive
4. The national budget was approved by congress. 3. active
5. She cooked the breakfast. 4. passive
5. active
Excellent class!

Now that we know how to distinguish Active and

Passive voice.
let’s proceed to the five Steps in transforming
Active Voice to Passive Voice.
So the first one is
Active: He writes a letter.
Step 1: Identify (S V O) -> (O V S)
You need to identify where is the subject, verb
and the object.
Okay, so who wants to try to identify where is the
subject, verb, and object?
Yes, Mr. Dela Cruz?

He writes a letter.
(S) (V) (O)
Very Good, you may take your seat now!
Step 2: Swap
You will swap the object and the subject.
Step 3: Convert Main Verb (MV) to third form of
the verb (V3/past participle)
write wrote V3: written
Step 4: Add helping verb: is
Step 5: Add preposition: “by” before the subject.
And we got,
A letter is written by Him.

Okay so that’s it, did you understand it class?

Students: “YES, SIR!”

D. APPLICATION

the changes in the following sentences:
Active Voice
1. The mother carried the baby.
2. Father repaired the old chair
Passive Voice

2. An old chair was repaired by father.

What happened to the subjects, verbs, and direct

object in the sentences in the active voice?

the receiver in the by- phrase in passive voice.
The action word carried and repaired became verb
phrases.
Very well said! I’m glad that you understand our The direct objects baby and chair became the
topic today So let’s give ourselves a round of subjects in the passive voice.
applause.
“Everyone in the class claps”
VERY GOOD CLASS!

E. GENERALIZATION

the active or in passive voice? How will you
change the passive from active to passive voice?

Yes Mr. Valdez?

The student raised his hand.

A verb that has direct objects is in the active

voice.
If the subjects are acted upon, the verb is in the
passive voice.
Precisely! In changing a sentence from active to passive, the
direct objects become the subjects or doers in the
