REFLECTION ESSAY

Data Visualization Internship

During my internship as a data analyst at Excelerate, I had the


privilege of joining the dynamic team, where I immersed myself in the world of
visualizing complex information. The purpose of my internship was to gain
practical experience and hone my skills in data visualization tools and techniques.
During my internship, I took on the role of project manager in my team, where I
drew out insights from other team members and ensures that the project
execution remains on track. As an intern, I have diligently addressed such
competences as thinking, communication, teamwork and collaboration, and
information literacy.

My primary goal during the internship was to deepen my understanding


of data visualization concepts and develop proficiency in using industry-standard
tools. To achieve this, our team was given a task in which we were analyzing data
from the marketing team on Facebook ad campaigns they ran for an event called
Superhero U. Our task was to help identify the marketing team at least one
campaign to discontinue in order to cut costs. We leveraged tools like Excel and
used data visualization to create interactive visualization that enabled us to
recommend at least one campaign to the marketing team to discontinue.
Additionally, our team worked on data cleaning and preprocessing,
ensuring that the visualizations accurately represented the underlying data.
Through hands-on experience, I enhanced my technical skills and grasped the
importance of storytelling in data visualization. As a student in the field of
computer science, the internship provided me with invaluable insights into real-
world data challenges and problem-solving techniques. I also learned the
significance of effective communication in conveying complex ideas to non-
technical stakeholders. These experiences have undoubtedly equipped me to
tackle future academic projects and collaborate more effectively with
interdisciplinary teams.

Throughout my internship, I had the opportunity to contribute to the


organization in various ways. By producing insightful data visualizations, I aided in
enhancing decision-making processes within the company (Globalshala) in their
ad campaigns. My efforts received positive feedback from supervisors and
teammates, underscoring the value of my contributions to the team's success.
Moreover, my willingness to learn and adapt to new challenges was appreciated,
as I actively sought feedback to improve my work continually.

In conclusion, my internship experience in data visualization has


been an enlightening journey of growth. By immersing myself in various projects,
I have gained a comprehensive understanding of data visualization's potential to
transform complex data into actionable insights. This experience has not only
fortified my technical skills but also instilled in me a deeper appreciation for the
art of storytelling with data. As I move forward in my academic journey, I am
confident that the experiences gained during this internship will play a pivotal
role in shaping my future endeavours in the field of data science and
visualization.
