DieDesign Features

The following tutorial contains various features of the DieDesign application which were not covered within the
basic and the advanced tutorials.

Blank on Binder

The Blank on Binder operation enables the user to create a local blank or global blank (FEM) on 3D groups of
faces.

Note: The binder object may contain any type of faces but for best results it is recommended that the binder
object contains only smooth, planar and cylindrical faces.

Two types of Blank on Binder operations exist, as follows:

• Local Blank on Binder


• Global Blank on Binder

Local Blank on Binder - Step 1

Select the Die setup icon to enter the Progressive Die Design Wizard. The Progressive Die Setup
Wizard window is displayed

Open the binder.elt file.

Check the Create New Folder and Copy Master To Folder options and click OK.

Note: The binder part is a skin model.

Local Blank on Binder - Step 2

From the DieDesign guide, select the Forming Shape > Add option.

Click the binder part to add a copy of it as new forming shape, name it Blank on Binder and click OK.

Set the Progression to 180. Click OK.

We will now create the Binder faces. Before doing so we will remove the irrelevant faces.

Remove the faces indicated in the picture below:

Create a contour for the extension faces. Select the Faces Outer Boundary option and select the entire
faces by box.

From the Faces menu, select the Extend option.

Select the Natural - Multi Continuous from the dropdown list.

Select the perviously created contour.

Set the Delta value to 70.00.

Click OK.

Note: The binder object must be stitched.

Stitch the extended faces.

Select the Blank on Binder icon from the guide.

First, you must select the binder object. Select the stitched object (of the extended faces), as follows:

Local Blank on Binder - Step 5
Select one of the faces that will be blanked on the binder, as follows:

Note: The system automatically selects the neighbouring faces and stops when it reaches a boundary which
is common to both the binder object and the faces to be blanked.

Exit.

Note: The common boundary is automatically selected as a fixed condition.

Accept the default parameters.

Note: If you use the Trim Binder -Off option, the system creates the blanked contour but does not trim the
binder with it, as shown below:

Click OK.

Global Blank on Binder

Global blank on Binder - Step 1


Select the Die Setup icon to enter the Progressive Die Design Wizard.

Open the Global Binder.elt file.

Check the Create New Folder and Copy Master To Folder options and click OK.

Select the Skin option from the Guide. Select the upper face as indicated by the arrow in the picture below
(the group of faces belonging to the selected face will remain).

We will now create a Form CS

Copy the model UCS and Rotate it by Z Axis = 90. Select OK.

Select the Form CS icon from the guide. Select the UCS as indicated by the arrow.

Global blank on Binder - Step 2
Add a new forming shape and select the model.

Accept the name and click OK.

Set the Forming Progression value to 200.Click Click OK.

Create Binder Faces

We will now create the Binder face by performing the following steps:

1. Remove geometry of irrelevant faces.

2. Modify faces by sketcher to enlarge the faces.

3. Create an intersection curve out of the faces

4. Create a sweep face that will be later defined as the binder object.

Remove the faces indicated by the arrows in the picture below:

We will now modify the faces indicated below:

Select the Faces \ Modify by Sketcher option.

Select the face indicated by the arrow in the picture below:

Delete the right edges.

Create a line as indicated by the arrow in the picture below:

Select the lower point. Select the Fix constraint.

Create another line (meaning, a lower line). Create a tangent constraint between this line and the
neighbouring edge.

Complete the sketch. Exit the Sketcher.

Modify by sketch the face indicated by the arrow in the picture below:

Delete the right edges.

Set a fix constraint to the upper left corner.

Create an upper line. Set a tangent constraint to its neighbour

Complete the face:

Exit the Sketcher

Modify by sketcher the small face as indicated by the arrow in the picture below:

Delete the edge shown below:

Set a fix constraint to the point indicated by the arrow in the picture below:

Add a reference geometry. Select the two edges indicated by the arrows in the picture below:

Complete the sketch and exit the Sketcher.

Modify by Sketcher the face as indicated by the arrow in the picture below:

Modify the face as shown in the picture below:

We will now create an intersection curve. First we will create the intersection plane.

Create a parallel plane to the face indicated by the arrow in the picture below:

Set a Delta value of 23.

Global Blank on Binder - Step 7

From the Curve menu, select the Intersection option.

Select the faces indicated by the arrows:

Select the previously created plane as the intersection plane.

Remove all entities (using the Remove Geometry option) apart from the intersected curve.

Create a Sweep face, using the intersection curve as input.

Delta, Both Sides, Delta = 100, Opposite Delta = 100

Select the Blank on Binder icon from the Guide.

Select the sweep face as the Binder object.

Select one of the faces of the Global Binder part. Select the entire faces (to perform a global binder). Exit.

Accept the default parameters

Enter the Define Boundary optional step. Note that the system suggests a fixed boundary. Unselect it

Select the circle as a fixed boundary.

Blank New Constraint Type

Load the file: blank new constraint.elt

Enter the Blank option.

Select the part and Exit.

Select the first optional step: Define boundary (fixed) conditions.

Accept the default option: Fix X & Y and select OK

Note: The relevant edges remain in the same position.

Change the color of the blanked form and hide it.

Create another Blank operation. Select the Fix Y (Free X) option and select the same edges as before.

Click OK. Show both blanks. Examine the result.

Hide the first blank.

Edit the last blank - Fix Y Free X

Enter the second optional stage to select entities to be transferred.

Select the Filter points. Select the four points as indicated by the arrows in the picture below:

Select OK.

Note that each point has moved only in the X' Z direction but Y remain the same. (according to the Fix Y
Free X option).

Unbend on Cylindrical Face

Unbend on Cylindrical Face

There are some cases that it is required to unbend the sequence of cylindrical faces. The system automatically
identifies (and selects) all the faces containing the same radius and axes. If required the user can un-select
these faces manually.

Load the file: blank new unbendcylider.elt

Select the option: Unbend. Toggle the Planar option to Cylindrical.

Select the Cylindrical face as indicated by the arrow in the picture below:

Note: The picked face must have linear boundaries

The system automatically jumps to the next required step.

Select the cylindrical face indicated by the arrow in the picture below:

Accept the default parameters and click OK.

The result is a flattened face tangent to the reference cylindrical face.

Complete the unbend operations of the part.

Handle the left side:

Perform another unbend on cylindrical face. Select the cylindrical face indicated by the arrow in the picture
below:

Before flattening the part, split the cylindrical face in it middle.

Unbend the left side.

Unbend the right side.

Transfer Die - Nesting

It is possible to create nesting for a transfer die without performing strip geometry. The system adds a number of
empty instances according to the number of the defined stations, in predefined distances. This is described in
the following procedure.

Transfer Die Nesting Step 1


Unpack the file: transferdie_DD.ctf

Select the Switch to Strip option from the Guide.

Select Nesting \ One Part.

Toggle the Progressive Die option to Transfer Die.

You may exit the first step without selecting any forming shape or part. Exit.

Change the No. of Progressions value to 7 and set the Progression value to 90. Select OK.

Notice the 7 instances.

Transfer Die Nesting - Step 2
Select the Nesting > Edit Nesting.

Select the first required step from the Feature Guide.

Select a forming shape, and Exit.

Set he Progression value to 70. Select OK.

The selection of the forming shape may assist you to determine the progression value.

Transfer Die Nesting Step3
Select the Nesting > Edit Nesting.

Select the first required step from the Feature Guide.

Select the WF shape, and Exit.

Set the Progression value to 120 and click OK.
