DETAILS
Release 8.3.6
1. UNDERSTAND THE ROSS 5D ARCHITECTURE
Review the architecture documentation. Decide whether you will use a thick client approach where
each client runs the app, or a thin client such as Citrix or Windows Remote Desktop Services where
the app runs centrally. If you are installing a stand-alone system such as a laptop without internet
connectivity, install the server components before installing the app.
Ensure that the client meets the system requirements, in particular a 64-bit version of Windows, 3D
graphics capability and a wheel mouse.
The app can be installed but not tested until you have installed the ROSS 5D database on a server.
ROSS 5D communicates directly on ports 80, 443 and 24195 to system services and indirectly via a
web browser link to the ROSS 5D Support Portal and CCS Knowledge Hub. If you are using ROSS
Classic, port 31438 is also required. Verify that the following URLs are accessible from your clients.
Open firewall ports and add to proxy server white lists if necessary.

The support portal and its videos will also need access to the following URLs to operate correctly:
assets.zendesk.com
guide.zdassets.com
zdassets.com
gravatar.com
screencast.com
techsmith.com
ajax.aspnetcdn.com
During installation the app .exe installer will download the required .NET Framework versions if they
are not installed. You will need internet access at this time or install the .NET Framework versions
manually.
Some components of ROSS 5D require the old Microsoft .NET Framework 3.5. Version 3.5 does not
come pre-installed on Windows 8.0 or Windows Server 2012. If you run these or later versions
of Windows:

ROSS 5D requires at least version 4.7.2 of the Microsoft .NET Framework runtime, but we
recommend upgrading to the latest version 4.8.1 for the longest future support period. Microsoft is
installing this on all PCs using Windows Update. If the client runs an earlier version of the .NET
Framework you can either:
Download and install CRRuntime_64bit_13_0_30.msi. Contact ROSS 5D Support for access to the
Microsoft Teams folder.

The msi file is the fastest to download and install. As an alternative option there is also an exe file.
This is a larger download but automatically installs the correct versions of ROSS 5D, Crystal Reports
and the .NET Framework.
If you have a handful of clients you can install them manually. However if you have a larger number of
clients it will be easier to use Windows Group Policy. The screen shot below shows how the Crystal
Reports runtime and ROSS 5D app can be configured to be installed automatically when the client
logs on to the network (Note: this is an old image).
When the app is first run, the user must enter the settings to find the ROSS 5D and ROSS Classic
servers. If the server cannot be found, check that:
If this was the first app in a new server installation you will need to activate your ROSS 5D licence. On
the message that there is no valid licence is an option to activate your licence. This opens a form for
entering your licence ID and password. You must also specify a shared folder location that is visible to
all clients and that they have read/write access to. If this folder is in a mapped network drive the
mapping must be specified identically, whether by login script, policy or manually. See the licence
activation guide for more information.
Also for the first time only, the IDX Licensing Server and ROSS Classic information needs to be
entered. On the File menu select Options. Go to the Administrator page and the General tab. Enter
the IDX licencing server's name. If you have ROSS Classic installed, enter the ROSS Classic server

name and account (usually ROSS). Also enter a username and password which are used to obtain
the descriptions of new projects from the ROSS Classic Office Administration module and check the
Connect box which enables this feature. Press Save and close the Options window.
To export to PDF format you will require a PDF viewer to be set as the default program for .pdf files.

12. TEST
Use this list as a check list to ensure that the server and client are configured correctly.
1. Run the ROSS 5D app. After showing the splash screen the main window should open
with the project search sidebar displayed. This tests that the ROSS 5D app and .NET
Framework 4.5.1 or higher are installed, the ROSS 5D licence has been activated,
connectivity is in place to the database server and the database is installed, that the
database security is set correctly and that the C++ Runtime files have been installed.
