CHAPTER I

INTRODUCTION

1.1 Problem Background

South Korean culture, both K-Pop and K-Drama have begun to proliferate. Since the last decade,
more and more young people have loved the cultural products of the Gingseng country. Young
people's dependence on foreign cultures will certainly have various effects, whether positive or
negative. Korean wave is a term that refers to the spread of Korean culture to various countries in
the world. Not only Indonesia, but also Korea's fever has also hit various countries, such as
Thailand, Japan, Malaysia, and even countries in Europe and America. Before the internet became
something that was easy to get, the beginning of Korean culture in Indonesia began with Korean
dramas on Indonesian private TV. The 2005 drama "Full House", starring Rain and Song He Kyo,
was the opening theme for Korean culture in Indonesia. The drama, which had a limited number of
episodes with more exciting conflicts, became an attraction. Unlike Indonesian soap operas that can
air up to thousands of episodes with swirling plot and conflict, Korean dramas have a predetermined
airing time, averaging only 16–22 episodes. In addition, the themes raised are also more diverse.
Not only raising social issues, Korean dramas also raise many other genres that never get bored. A
few years later, not only Korean dramas, K-Pop music also began to infect Indonesian society. Let's
say, Super Junior, Big Bang, SNSD, Infinite, EXO, until BTS started to become the new music
qibla of the world community, including in Indonesia. Moreover, in a modern era like this,
information dissemination takes place quickly and easily. With the Internet, information from all
over the world can be accessed quickly. This is what triggers an increasing number of teenagers
who are interested in Korean culture. The reason why Korean culture is easily accepted by
Indonesian people is that there is a cultural similarities. Together in the Asian region, Korean
culture still knows manners like in Indonesia. It becomes an attraction of its own. In contrast to
western cultures that tend to be free and irregular, Korean culture still has similarities to Indonesia,
especially from the politeness side. This became the reason why people easily switched from
western culture to Korean culture. The constant and massive influx of Korean culture certainly has
an impact on the mindset of young people in Indonesia. In this work, the author will discuss the
impact of Korean culture on the social life of teenagers in the United States.

CHAPTER II

DISCUSSION
A. Positive Effects of South Korean Culture on Teenagers in Indonesia
Everything always has two sides to man: the positive and the negative. South Korean
culture is not always bad. Together in the Asian community, Korean culture can also have a
positive impact. The positive effects are as follows.
1. Motivating themselves to Fight Hard to Make Dreams Real
In South Korea, to become an artist or an idol, they have to go through a short training
period. To be able to debut as a singer, the artist spent a very long trainee period, even
some up to seven years. They continue to undergo training periods without knowing
whether they can make it to debut or not. To be a singer, talent can't be guaranteed.
Each trainee has to work hard to make his dream come true. Not only when they
become trainees, when they have made their debut, they have to keep competing
closely. To survive in the entertainment world, hard work is the key. For teenagers,
their idols are their role models. This good side can also be embedded for teenagers in
Indonesia. If they want to achieve a dream soon, they have to study hard.
2. Expanding the Overview of Korean Culture
Through movies or songs enjoyed, teenagers will begin to become interested in learning
Korean culture. Not only do they learn their culture automatically, teenagers these days
even do courses to learn Korean and Hangeul or Korean letters.
3. Learning to Save
Because of the great interest in Korean culture, not a few teenagers want to buy some
kind of merchandise from their idol artists. To get it they obviously have to have
money. Loving Korean culture can also teach teenagers to be fond of saving money.
4. Adding Friends and Experience
After Korean culture became so popular in Indonesia, many K-Pop or K-Drama-loving
communities emerged. They will form groups according to their preferences to
exchange information and merchandise. By joining the community, teenagers have a
larger circle of friendship. This relationship can provide many benefits to adolescents

5
B. Negative Effects of Korean Culture on Teenagers in Indonesia
In addition to things that smell positive, Korean culture also has a negative impact. Some of
these negative effects are as follows.

1. Being More wasteful

Because there are so many Korean merchandise that enter Indonesia, teenagers who
lack control over their desires tend to be wasteful. If not handled immediately, this
habit will have a detrimental effect on youth life.
2. Frequent Intercommunity Controversy (Fanwar)
Due to excessive love, the K-Pop community often quarrels or what is commonly
called a fan. It can also be mentally damaging to teenagers.
3. The fading of Pride in Self-Culture
When it is too engrossed in foreign cultures, teenagers tend to forget traditional
Indonesian culture. The fading of pride in one's own culture can clearly trigger
cultural extinction. Someday, Indonesia's native culture could be completely lost.

CHAPTER III

CLOSING

5.1 Conclution
The massive spread of Korean culture in Indonesia will obviously cause both positive and negative
impacts. The impact is more felt by teenagers. The reason is that teenagers tend to be labile because
they are in the process of self-discovery.
As long as the love for Korean culture is not excessive, teenagers will get more positive impacts
than negative impacts. They can emulate the positive qualities of their idols.
Conversely, if teenagers have excessive love, the negative impact of the entry of Korean culture is
inevitable.
5.2 Suggestion
So is the paper on the effects of Korean culture on teenagers in Indonesia. The author hopes that we
can understand the meaning or content of this paper and can apply it to people's lives. This paper
benefits all of us that they can understand the positive and negative effects of Korean culture on
teenagers in Indonesia. The author recognizes that this paper is not perfect, so we ask for criticism
and advice so that the author can find out where the flaws in the paper are and hopefully it can be
completed perfectly.
