OLUWALEKE UMAR YUSUF

LETTER OF MOTIVATION
[M.Sc. in Engineering- Mechatronics, University of Southern
Denmark]
My interest in engineering is a direct consequence of a childhood desire to understand the world
around me. My imagination was aroused and interest piqued when I spent some of my prepubescent
years with my maternal grandmother who ran the cafeteria for the state road maintenance agency.
This was my introduction to the world of big, heavy construction equipment and the mechanical
engineering behind them. Coupled with a reading habit that led me to the works of Jules Verne and
H.G. Wells, I resolved to study engineering, to the dismay of my parents, who had a medical career in
mind.

In light of this resolution, I studied hard for my final senior secondary education WAEC (West African
Examinations Council) exams, bagging the best result in my state, and the fifth best result in my
country, Nigeria. This gave me a smooth entry into the University of Ibadan, the foremost academic
institution in the country, where I obtained my B.Sc. in Mechanical Engineering, graduating with a
CGPA of 5.6/7.0 (Second Class Upper).

During my B.sc, I became dissatisfied with the focus on theoretical knowledge without a
commensurate amount of practical work. Thus, began my personal self-development involving
science-related sites and blogs such as HowStuffWorks.com and several YouTube channels. My
interest in Mechanical Engineering narrowed into conceptual design, analysis, simulation and related
fields. In light of this, I self-taught CAD programs such as AutoDesk AutoCAD, AutoDesk Inventor,
AutoDesk 3Ds Max, Simulia Solidworks, Abaqus/CAE. With these programs, particularly SolidWorks, I
was finally able to conceptualize and share design concepts that were just random images in my head.
I got so good with SolidWorks, I became a freelance CAD designer for students and lecturers within
my faculty. I also took care to carry out my industrial training sessions in factories and workshops
where I was able to develop my paltry practical engineering skills.

In line with my burgeoning interest in engineering design, my B.Sc. thesis was on “Computational
Modelling of Mechanical Response of Aluminium-Copper Alloy AA2519-T6 under Dynamic Impact
Loading” using the Abaqus/CAE numerical software. The objective of the study was to develop a
computational model of the Split-Hopkinson Pressure Bar (SHPB), an indispensable tool in researching
the response of diverse engineering materials to dynamic impact loading at high strain rates. This
aimed at overcoming the financial, personnel and technical constraints which makes the use of the
SHPB beyond the reach of designers and engineers in developed and developing countries.

Once I got my degree, I took up positions and gained extensive practical experience in the construction
industry (preventive, reactive and corrective repair of heavy earth-moving construction machinery)
and telecommunications industry (field engineer and operations centre specialist for power and
cooling equipment at telecoms installations). In my personal time, I self-taught basic computer
programming and developed a far level of skill using Python 3. I also engaged in various conceptual
CAD designs projects such as:

1. A quadcopter-like drone with retractable wings and tyres, thus providing a hybrid mode of
operation. The drone also possesses a robotic arm with a gripper.
2. A CNC sorting machine with an integrated sensor suite. Designed to separate objects among
a pile according to various properties such as weight, colour, material, etc., as the case may
be.

In recent years, mankind has set its gaze to the stars, and has taken giant steps in that direction. It is
my heart-felt desire to be a part of that journey, to part of the engineering community as it shines
light on this new horizon with new ideas, concepts, techniques from every conceivable aspect and
field. I intend to contribute my part to the advancement of the species by being on the cutting-edge
of mechanical engineering related research and design. Particularly in the fields of space travel
technology, robotics and autonomous systems, these developing fields having captured my interest
and imagination.

I have been greatly encouraged and challenged in my desire to continue my studies abroad by fellow
Nigerians who are currently doing the same. I also want my personal success and advancement to
serve as a challenge and encouragement to other young engineers and professionals in Nigeria, a
country mired in numerous woes, that they need not be hampered by their circumstances and/or left
behind as the world takes giant strides forward.

For these reasons, I have decided to further my education and pursue my M.Sc. in Engineering -
Mechatronics at the prestigious University of Southern Denmark. This will be a great step towards the
achievement of my personal, life and career goals. Having made a careful study of the school the
mechanical engineering faculty, I am convinced that the study environment will be a novel experience
that will certainly broaden my horizons, and make me an asset to the global community and humanity
at large.
