Second Semester 2020-2021
Digital Signal Processing (ECE/EEE F434)
Comprehensive Exam
Time : 10.00 – 12.00 PM Date: 12/05/21
Max Marks : 120 Day: Wednesday
INSTRUCTIONS
1. This is a descriptive type question with six questions each with 20 marks. You need to answer
on white A4 size paper/papers systematically, clearly and in the same sequence, as
given in the question paper. Answering parts of a question at the different places will
not be evaluated. Make a box around your final answer to make it clearly visible for
correction.
2. At the end of exam, you need to scan same and create a single pdf file with file name as
ID.NO_name (Ex: 2017AAPS0394H_ ASHISH K). Then upload your answer file in the link
provided in google form as well as send the same by email to a mail id created for
exam(sahoobitsexam@gmail.com). A student not submitting answer sheet through google
form may be considered for suitable mark deduction.
3. After evaluation, we will intimate the marks for each question with the marking scheme.
Do keep a copy of your answer with you for any verification/recheck. A student can
start exam between 9.50-10.05AM. But, any answer sheet received after 12.10PM will
be considered as late submission and marks will be deducted suitably.
4. It is your responsibility to ensure that you have uploaded the correct .pdf file with ALL
THE answers you have written for each part. We will not consider any request after
the exam in case you have uploaded the wrong answer file or incomplete answer
sheets.
1. [A] Design a digital IIR low-pass filter with pass band edge at 1000 Hz and stop band edge at
2100 Hz for a sampling frequency of 5000 Hz. The filter is to have pass band ripple of 4 dB
and stop band ripple below 30 dB. Find the transfer function of the Butterworth filter using
bilinear transfer function. Assume the sampling time T=2 for simplicity. The designed filter
should perfectly match the pass band filter specification. [15 M]
[B]Find α, β and the expression for a second order band pass IIR digital filter TF H(z) for the
specification given as: ω0 = 0.55 π and BW = 0.25 π. [5 M]
PTO.
2. [A] Determine whether the given Transfer function H(z) is a bounded real function. Show
the steps, equations used.

[B] Obtain the FIR filter coefficients using window method (by identifying a suitable fixed
window) that meets the specifications given below for a lowpass filter.
Plot the given specifications and mark the x- and y- axis values. Give the values of the
designed filter coefficients hd(0), hd(1), hd(-1), hd(2) and hd(-2) only. Show the steps,
calculations, equations used. Use the mathematical expression for the suitable window
function only from the window function expressions given below. [14 M]
3. [A] Consider the following digital system whose impulse response is given by
360 140 1 𝑛 1 𝑛
ℎ(𝑛) = 𝛿(𝑛) − (2) − 84 (−5)

Write/give whether the given system is minimum phase/ maximum phase/ mixed phase
system. Convert the system to a minimum phase system G(z) which is given by

𝐺(𝑧) = 𝐻(𝑧) 𝐴(𝑍) where A(z) is the all pass filter. Find G(z) and A(z). Determine
whether G(z) is stable. Give pole- zero plots for H(z), G(z) and A(z). Show the steps.

[B] Using Frequency sampling approach design an FIR filter for a length of 7 given the
following desired filter characteristics. Show the steps, equations used [12 M]

4. [A] Give the Parallel direct FORM II realization for the filter given below. Show the steps,
equations used [7 M]
[B] Consider the FIR filter whose impulse response h(n) is given below.
Find/give the cascaded filter sections between the input x(n+2) and output y(n) as
shown in figure below. Show the steps, equations used [8 M]
[C] Consider the filter structure shown below. Obtain H(z). Express mathematically H(z)
as a cascade of appropriate first order and second order filter sections. Show the steps,
equations used [5 M]
PTO.
5. [A] In the following figure find p[n], v[n], w[n], z[n] and then y1[n] and y2[n] in discrete
time domain. Then write the simplified expression for y1[n] and y2[n].
[3+2+2+2+3+3=15M]
[B] The first-order filter shown in fig below is implemented in four-bit (including sign) fixed-
point two’s complement fractional arithmetic. Products/outputs are rounded-up to four-bit
representation. Using the input x(n) = 0.10 δ (n), give the first five outputs if α = 0.75. Does
the filter go into a limit cycle? [5M]
6. [A] An analog filter has the following system function. Convert this filter into a digital filter using
