Fan Starting Requirements & WR2 Values For Motors

The information contained herein has been developed to provide a method of determining the exact motor starting requirements for PennBarry fans and the starting capability of certain motor manufacturers. The brake horsepower required to drive the fans is obtained from the performance tables in the product bulletin. The WR2 values for each motor horsepower have been provided by the motor manufacturer as of 1983. PennBarry does not assume any responsibility for the accuracy of the motor WR2 values. For more current and accurate motor WR2 values, contact a representative of the motor manufacturer directly.
Determining WR2 Values

For your convenience the following charts have been developed to provide a fast method of determining starting requirements for PennBarry fans. The charts cover Class I and II fans only for airfoil, backward inclined, and tubular centrifugal fans. The basic formula is: WR2(M) = WR2(F) Where:
Example
Let us check an 890 VersaCon Airfoil Class I DW fan which is to operate at 100,000 CFM at 1" SP. From the VersaCon product bulletin, we determine the required fan speed is 207 RPM and the air brake horsepower is 20.57. We then assume that an open drip-proof motor is being supplied by Reliance. Referring to Chart #7 we determine the WR2 required at the motor by drawing a vertical line at 207 RPM until it intercepts size 890 diagonal line. A horizontal line is then drawn from this point to the left where the WR2 required at the motor is indicated. This indicates an 890 DWDI fan operating at 207 RPM would require a WR2 value at the 1150 RPM motor shaft equal to 650 pound-feet2. Referring to the allowable motor WR2 at the shaft, we find Reliance 25 horsepower, 1150 RPM motor has 750 lb-ft2 allowable and is therefore satisfactory. Note that three of the other motor manufacturers would not be capable of starting this fan at these given conditions. Using one of these other manufacturers would require a larger horsepower motor in order to start the fan.

Defining The Problem

The common practice is to base motor selection on the fan BHP as given by the performance tables. However, for applications requiring high volume at a low static pressure, the BHP at the fans operating RPM may not be sufficient to initially start the fan. The WR2 value for the fan wheel would exceed the WR2 value for the motor. If the startup time required by the motor is excessive, the insulation of the motors windings will be damaged due to an excessive temperature rise and the life of the motor would be seriously affected. These circumstances are most common with airfoil and backward inclined wheels of 36 1/2" or greater. Most industrial fans have sufficient static pressure requirements to overcome this potential problem. In order to prevent motor damage, the WR2 values for each wheel type are provided in the product bulletin. The WR2 value for selected motors by horsepower is provided by the motor manufacturer and reproduced in this document. By comparing the two WR2 values it can be determined whether or not the motor can start the fan without damage to the motor windings.
RPM(M) = motor speed RPM(F) = fan speed NOTE: WR2 or moment of inertia is expressed in pound-feet2. Although Class III and IV fans are not included in the following charts, the same basic equation can be used to determine WR2 (M) of these higher class fans. Because the WR2 value can vary greatly among motor manufacturers, estimates are provided for various manufacturers on the last couple of pages. These values are measured at the motor shaft in poundfeet2 for ODP or TEFC motors with either 1 hot or 2 cold across-the-line starts. Based on NEMA Design B motors, values are provided for both 4 pole (1750 RPM) and 6 pole (1150 RPM) motors. When motors other than those shown are used, the available WR2 at the motor should be obtained from the motor manufacturer.
