Hazardous Materials Identification System (HMIS)

Hydrochloric acid is a corrosive liquid that causes severe burns to skin, eyes, and other tissues. Exposure can occur through inhalation, ingestion, skin contact, and eye contact. It is harmful if swallowed and the mist or vapor is extremely irritating. Prolonged exposure may cause chronic health effects like gastritis and dermatitis. Proper personal protective equipment should be worn when handling it and it requires careful handling and storage according to guidelines.

Special Protective Equipment As in any fire wear MSHA/NIOSH approved (or

equivalent) self-contained positive pressure.
For Firefighters or pressure-demand breathing apparatus and full protective gear.

SECTION 6: Accidental release measures

Personal Precautions: Ventilate the area of leak or spill. Isolate hazard areas and keep
unnecessary and unprotected personnel away from the area of the leak or spill. Keep upwind.
Keep out of low areas. Wear appropriate personal protective equipment as specified in the
Exposure Control and
Personal Protection Section 8. Avoid contact with eyes, skin, and clothing.
Environmental Precautions: Prevent further leakage or spillage if safe to do so. Do not
contaminate water. Avoid discharge into drains, water courses or, onto the ground. In case of
a large spill, dike if needed.
Methods for Containment: Stop the flow of material if this is without risk. Prevent entry into
waterways, sewers, basements, or confined areas. Dike the spilled material, where this is
possible.
Methods for Cleaning Up: Absorb spill with an inert material, and place in a suitable non-
combustible container for reclamation or disposal. Do not use combustible materials, such as
sawdust. Clean contaminated surfaces thoroughly. Neutralize spill area and washings with soda
ash or lime. Never return spills in original containers for re-use.
Clean up in accordance with all applicable regulations.
SECTION 7: Handling and storage

Handling: Wear personal protective equipment (see section 8). Use only in well-ventilated
areas. Provide sufficient air exchange and/or exhaust in work rooms. Avoid contact with skin,
eyes, and clothing. Do not breathe vapors or spray mist. Do not ingest. When using, do not eat,
smoke, or drink. Keep away from incompatible materials. Handle in accordance with good
industrial hygiene and safety practices. Wash thoroughly after handling. Containers of this
material may be hazardous when empty since they retain product residues (vapors, liquids).
Observe all warnings and precautions listed for the product Use caution when combining with
water. DO NOT add water to acid. ALWAYS add acid to water while stirring to prevent the
release of heat, steam, and fumes.

Storage: Store in a COOL, DRY, VENTILATED AREA away from incompatible materials.
Store in original container. Keep containers tightly closed and upright. Keep away from food,
drink, and animal feeding stuff. KEEP OUT OF THE REACH OF CHILDREN.

the water table. If released into water, it dissociates almost completely and will be neutralized
by natural alkalinity and carbon dioxide. This material is inorganic and not subject to
biodegradation

Disposal Instructions: Dispose of this material and its container at hazardous or special
waste collection points.
Contaminated Packaging: Since emptied containers retain product residue, follow label
warnings even after the container is emptied. Offer rinsed packaging material to local
recycling facilities.
Waste Codes: D002: Waste corrosive material (pH ≤ 2 or pH ≥12.5, or corrosive to steel)
Do not dispose of waste with normal garbage, or to sewer systems.
Whatever cannot be saved for recovery or recycling, including containers, should be
managed in an appropriate and approved waste disposal facility.
Incinerate the material under controlled conditions in an approved incinerator.
