Background
TheFoodBankofNortheastGeorgia ACommunityEfforttoEndHunger Sinceitsfoundingin1992,TheFoodBankofNortheastGeorgiahasbeencommittedto endinghungerinoverfourteencountiesinNortheastGeorgia.Thenetworkofvolunteers workstofeedtheill,needy,seniorsandminorchildrenofthecommunity.Withover125,000 needyindividualsintheirservicearea,theFoodBankstrivestodistribute1000poundsof foodperyear,perperson.Withthehelpofnonprofitagencies,theFoodBankdistributes approximately10to15millionpoundsoffoodannually.Forevery$1donation,theFoodBank canprovidefourmeals. 245nonprofitagencieshavecontributedtothemissionoftheFoodBank.These agenciesprovidevolunteerstodistributefoodthroughsoupkitchens,foodpantries,senior centers,churches,andotherhungerrelieforganizations. TheFoodBankofNortheastGeorgiarecentlylaunchedtheF2KPrograminJanuary 2008.Throughthisprogramkidfriendlymealsareprovidedtochronicallyhungrychildrenin participatingcounties,asidentifiedbytheschoolsystems.Astheprogramgrew,theFood Bankwasalsoabletoprovidefoodfortheentirefamiliesofthesechildren. ThoughmembersoftheChurchareconstantlylookingforserviceopportunities,local congregationsoftheChurchhostDaysofServiceannually,whichcombinestheeffortsofall themembersinthecongregation.Thesedaysofservicebenefitlocalorganizationsandpast beneficiarieshaveincludedtheAthensAreaHomelessShelter,victimsofHurricaneKatrina, andvictimsoftheearthquakesinHaitiandChile. TheChurchhasaspecificHelpingHandsprogramthatexiststocreateorganized opportunitiesforChurchmemberstogivetheirtimeandefforts,andshowthattheChurchis afriendtothecommunity.Theprogramwascreatedtoimprovecommunities,strengthenthe testimonyofchurchmembers,indirectlysharethegospelofJesusChrist,andenhancethe reputationoftheChurchbybuildingstrategicrelationshipswithopinionleaders. Proposal
Annually,theFoodBankofNortheastGeorgiadistributes10to15millionpoundsof foodtothe14countyservicearea.TheFoodBankofNortheastGeorgiaisinneedoffood itemsandfinancialcontributions.TheChurchofJesusChristofLatterdaySaintsisorganizing aCanHunger5KFunRun/WalkonApril16,2011tobenefittheFoodBankNEGA.All proceeds,includingfoodandfinancialdonations,willbedonatedtotheFoodBankNEGA. ThisinauguralCanHunger5KFunRun/Walkisacommunityeventaimingtoreplace shortagesoffooditemsattheFoodBankNEGAtofeedhungryindividualsandfamiliesinthe NortheastGeorgiaregion.Forentryfees,participantswillhaveopportunitiestomake financialcontributionsorfooditemdonationstotheFoodBank. WhilebenefittingtheFoodBankofNortheastGeorgia,theCanHunger5KFun Run/WalkwillraiseawarenessofTheChurchofJesusChristofLatterdaySaintsinthe NortheastGeorgiacommunity.Iftheeventissuccessful,residentswillbecomeconsciousof themanyserviceeffortsofTheChurch,anditsinvolvementinthecommunity.Theevents successdependsonthenumberofparticipantsthatregisteraswellastheamountoffoodand monetarydonationsraisedfortheFoodBankofNortheastGeorgia. Toensurethesuccessoftheevent,theplanningprocessmustbecarefullyconducted. CommunicationwiththeFoodBankaswellastheOconeeVeteransParkwillbeginfarin advanceinordertomustersupportandbuildanetworkforraisingawareness.Byseeking corporatesponsors,wecansecurethefundsneededtohosttheeventandcovercosts associatedwithadvertising,raceequipment,eventinsurance,refreshments,andfacilities. Sponsorswillalsobeabletodonatefundstoensurethatourdonationgoalismet.Volunteers fromTheChurchandcommunitywillbeenlistedtomakesuretheeventrunssmoothly. Theresultsoftheeventwillbemeasuredthroughentryfees,donations,attendance, andsuccessfulfeedbackandresponseoftheparticipants.Ifsuccessful,wewillsurpassour goalof20,000poundsoffood,makingthecostoftheeventnegligible.Aftertheevent,wewill sendthankyouletterstooursponsors,withanoffertoparticipateinthefuture.Followup willbedonewiththeFoodBankofNortheastGeorgiatoevaluatetheeffectivenessofthe event.ThepublicaffairsandservicecommitteesofTheChurchwillmeetafterwardsto evaluatewhatstepsshouldbetakentoimprovetheeventinthefuture. 6
