English Language & Literature Students must complete three tasks:

Analysing task - (30 marks)

Unit 3. How do we map Matter?
Classification of elements using common properties. Patterns of properties of elements

noble gas , alkali and alkaline earth metals , lanthanide and actinide). General structure
of the atom . Difference between atom and ion. Understanding of the periodic table as
an organizer of elements according to their chemical properties. Introduction to
chemical nomenclature. Investigate the properties of metals and non-metals. Evidence
that ions and atoms have different properties. Alloys and Emission spectrum.

Unit 4. How do atoms bond?


Different types of bonding (ionic , covalent , metallic) affect physical and chemical
properties. The relationship between bond types in molecules and the location of their
elements in the periodic table. Bonding relationships, molecular and giant lattice
structure of covalent compounds including intermolecular forces (Dispersion forces ,
Dipole-Dipole forces , Hydrogen Bonding) affect macromolecular properties of
substances. Valency to balance the atoms in a compound. Writing formulas with
polyatomic ions. Writing and understanding the formulas of a compound. Periodic
Trends (Atomic size , ionization energy , electronegativity , electron affinity , reactivity
patterns)

Unit 5. What are the impacts of the chemical Industry?


Writing and balancing the chemical equations. Predicting the ions in the solutions
(precipitation reactions). Investigating the ions in the solutions (cations and anions).
Symbols of the chemical equation. Double displacement reactions , precipitation
reactions (solubility rules for ionic compounds). Managing heavy metals as water
pollutants (solubility rules). Distinguish between acid and a base. Indicators of acid and
base (phenolphthalein , methyl orange , litmus paper , bromothymol blue) . pH and
variation in colors , measurement of hydrogen ions concentration , concentrated and
diluted solutions . Reactions of acids with metal carbonates , hydrogen carbonates and
metal oxides and writing equations . Neutralization reactions.

Unit 6. What determines chemical change?


Conditions required for a substance to change state or react. Physical conditions that
affect rates of diffusion and particle motion. Factors that make the reaction possible.
Quantitative chemistry (calculations involving moles). Exothermic and Endothermic
reactions. Enthalpy and entropy . Titration – neutralization reactions.
