Instructions to candidates
(i) Write your name, admission number and class in the space provided above.
(ii) Sign and write the date of examination in the spaces provided above.
(iii) This paper consists of two sections: Section I and Section II.
(iv) Answer all the questions in Section I and only five questions from Section II.
(v) Show all the steps in your calculations, giving your answers at each stage in the
spaces provided below each question.
(vi) Marks may be given for correct working even if the answer is wrong.
(vii) Non – programmable silent electronic calculators and KNEC Mathematical Tables
may be used, except where stated otherwise.
(viii) This paper consists of 15 printed pages. Candidates should check the question paper

10. Two aircrafts A and B leave airport P at the same time. Aircraft A flies on a bearing
072o at an average speed of 240 km/h while aircraft B flies on a bearing 300 o at an
average speed of 288 km/h. Calculate the distance between the two aircrafts after 40
minutes of

11. Three metal rods of lengths 4.68m, 5.40m and 6.48m were cut into shorter pieces of
maximum possible equal lengths to make window grills. Find the least number of
pieces
that can be obtained from the rods. (3 marks)
12. Given that a=3i + 2j and b=4i + j, find |5𝒂 − 2𝒃|. (3 marks)
14. The interior angles of an irregular hexagon are 2xo, x◦, (x +40) ◦, (2x-15) ◦ ,110o
and 145o. Find the size of the smallest angle of the hexagon. (3 marks)
15. A salesman earns a basic salary of Sh. 6 700 plus a commission of x% on all sales above
Sh. 120 000. In a certain month, he made sales amounting to Sh. 310 000 and earned
a total of Sh. 20 000. Determine the amount of money he would have earned with sales
amounting to Sh. 420 000. (3 marks)
16. A student cycled from his home to school 5 km away in 15 minutes. He stopped at the
school for 5 minutes before taking a motorcycle to a town 25 km away. The
motorcycle travelled at an average speed of 50 km/h. On the grid provided below,
draw a graph of distance (km) against time (minutes) to represent the journey.

18. The gradient of a straight line L1 passing through the points P (3,4) and Q is -1 .
Another line L2 is perpendicular to L1 and passes through the points Q and R (2,-1).

(ii) The equation of the line L2 in the form ax + by = c where a, b and c are

(b) In a public auction, the price of a goat is Ksh. x while the price of a sheep is Ksh.
y. A trader bought 3 goats and 4 sheep for a total of Ksh. 41 100. If he had bought

(i) Form two linear equations to represent the information above. (2

(ii) Use A -1 in (a) above to find the cost of one goat and one sheep. (4 marks)
(c) After a year, the trader sold all the animals at a profit of 20% per goat and 25%
per
sheep. How much sales did he make. (2 marks)
(ii) A circle that passes through the vertices P, Q and R. Measure the radius of
the circle. (3 marks)
(b) Calculate the area of the circle that lies outside the triangle PQR correct to 2
decimal places. Take π to be 3.142.

22. The distance between two towns P and Q is 180 km. A car travelling at 15 km/h faster
than a van takes 36 minutes less to arrive at Q from P.
(a) Calculate the speeds of the car and the van. (4 marks)
(b) On a certain day, the van left town P for Q at 7.15 a.m. Eighteen minutes later, a
salon car left town Q for P. Find:
(i) The time when the two vehicles met. (3 marks)
(ii) The distance of the van from Q when the salon car arrived at P. (3
marks)
23. In the figure below O is the centre of the circle. PQR is a tangent to the circle at Q.
Angle PQS=280, angle UTQ=540 and UT =TQ.
