CHAPTER I

INTRODUCTION

Background of the Study

Understanding the difficulties in English writing of

students is essential for educators to provide effective support

that helps students to develop their writing skills and succeed

academically and professionally. According to Brassel and

Wheatley (2007) by understanding the difficulties that students

face when learning to write in English, educators can identify

areas where students may struggle the most. Researched have shown

that many students struggle with grammar, syntax, and

punctuation. Through identifying these areas of weakness,

educators can provide targeted support to help students to

improve their writing skills. It is also helps in improving

student motivation, when students struggle with writing, they may

become discouraged or disengaged. However, by understanding the

difficulties they face, educators can provide support that is

tailored to their needs, which can help improve their motivation

to learn. Study by Graham and Harris (2016) found that providing

explicit instruction in writing strategies helped to improve the

motivation and writing skills of struggling writers.

English language learners and students with learning

disabilities may face additional difficulties when learning to

write in English. By understanding the unique challenges these

students face, educators can provide accommodations and support

that are appropriate for their needs. In addition, Kim & Vaughn

(2014) stated that graphic organizers can be an effective tool

for helping English language learners to organize their thoughts

and improve their writing skills. To give the gist, understanding

the difficulties in English writing of students is crucial for

educators and tutors looking to provide effective support to

these students. By identifying areas of weakness, improving

student motivation, and supporting diverse learners, educators

can help students develop the writing skills they need to succeed

in academic and professional settings.

Hence this study will be conducted to understand the

difficulties in writing in English of Grade 11 Senior High School

Students.

Statement of the Problem

This study aims to understand the difficulties behind in

writing English medium by the Grade 11 students in Gaudencio L.

Vega National High School for the School Year 2022-202.

Specifically, it seeks to answer the following questions:

1.What are the internal problems that may cause students to

Scope and delimitation of the Study

The main purpose of this study is to understand the

difficulties behind in writing in English medium. The grade 11

senior high school students of Gaudencio L. Vega National High

School is utilized as respondents on this research. This study

considers the respondents demographic profile in terms of age and

sex. Eighty (80) Grade 11 students will serve as the respondents

of this Study as used with the slovins formula. Twenty Six (26)

will be selected from section pythagoras, twenty six (26) from

section Heraclitus, and twenty eight (28) will be from section

Aristotle using the Statisfied random sampling to avoid bias and

achieve objective perception. A survey-questionnaire will be used

as the a research instrument to gather the necessary data and

information. This study will be conducted within the second

semester of the School Year 2022-2023.

Significance of the Stuudy

The researchers believe that the study will not only yield

data that will be helpful to them more so to the following groups

of people. This study will add knowledge to the students on how

to improve their handwriting.

Through this research teacher will make a way to improve the

students chronography skills. School huministritors this study

can help the school administrations to implement a program to

improve students English calligraphy skills.

Students- This study will add knowledge to the students on

how to improve their handwritting.

Teachers- Through this research teacher will make a way to

improve the students skills.

School Hoministrators- This study can help the school

administrators to implement a program to improve the students

English,skills calligraphy.

Future Researcher- This study will provide a knowledge or

they can make. this as their reference if they want to conduct a

same research.

Definition of Terms

The following terms are defined conceptually and operationally

for the better understanding of this study.

External Problem- Refer to a struggle that takes place

between a character and an outside force.(litchart.com 2023)

Internal Problem- Refer to a struggle within a p erson’s mind over a problem or

question. (Dictionary.com 2023)

Skills- Refers to an ability to do something well, either

manually, mentally, or both. In contrast to terms that denote

only potential for acquiring some ability (such as natural

ability, talent, aptitude, or capacity), the term skill usually

means actual competence that has been acquired by training,

schooling,or practice. (Encyclopedia.com 2023)
