Improving academic writing skill: Difficulties encountered by
undergraduates of English studies in Bangladesh
Sadik Hossain
ID: 1803510201697
Introduction:
Bangladeshi undergraduate students in English programs face significant challenges in developing their
academic writing skills, which are crucial for success in universities and scholarly publications. Major
barriers include poor grammatical competence, limited vocabulary, inadequate knowledge of writing
mechanics and style, and insufficient brainstorming skills. Additionally, mother tongue interference
from Bangla often results in direct translations and grammatical errors in English writing. To overcome
these obstacles, focused grammar instruction, vocabulary-building activities, and lessons on writing
mechanics and academic style are essential. Teaching effective brainstorming and planning techniques
can also help students organize their thoughts more coherently. Raising awareness about mother tongue
interference and providing targeted exercises can further improve writing proficiency. By addressing
these issues, students can enhance their academic writing skills, leading to better performance in
assessments and overall academic success.
Key Findings:
1. Bangladeshi undergraduate students in English programs struggle with academic writing due to
poor grammar, limited vocabulary, and mother tongue interference, but targeted instruction and
practice can improve their proficiency and academic success. ( Karim et al., 2017)
3. English learners had inadequate knowledge of writing processes and techniques, focusing
excessively on grammar and mechanics at the expense of overall writing skill improvement. (Patwary
and Sajib, 2018)
4. Strong correlation between grammatical understanding and writing quality in Finnish students,
noting that less proficient writers often used less complex vocabulary.(Marjokorpi ,2023)
5. Researchers found challenges in writing competence for Arabian learners including issues with
capitalization, punctuation, grammar, spelling, memorization, error awareness, English background
knowledge, and mother tongue interference. (Mohammad and Hazarika ,2016)
6. Revealing prevalent issues such as errors in subject-verb agreement, copula "be," omission,
overinclusion, misselection, and blend errors.(Hong et al.,2020)
2
7. Found that teachers play a crucial role in developing learners' higher-order thinking skills, such as
problem-solving and reasoning, which significantly enhance writing proficiency and foster independent
critical thinking and learner autonomy.(Singh et al.,2020)
8. Researchers highlighted the effectiveness of active reading activities, such as book reviews and
summarizing, in promoting deeper comprehension and engagement compared to passive tasks like
multiple-choice exercises, which only facilitate superficial understanding.(Correia, 2006)
9. Explored the connection between sentimentality and syntactic complexity in writing among Chinese
writers, arguing for a significant correlation between psychological state and writing.(Wang ,2020)
10. Addressed students' reluctance, fear, indifference, and lack of confidence in writing, suggesting the
use of "I-can statements" or "I will statements" as effective strategies for teachers to encourage writing
engagement.(MacDuff et al. ,2010)
Discussion:
The research highlights the challenges in enhancing language proficiency, particularly in writing. Some
emphasize teachers' vital role in improving writing through higher-order thinking skills, while others
stress the importance of engaging reading activities for better understanding. However, caution is
needed due to limitations like small sample sizes and potential biases. To address these challenges
effectively, a comprehensive approach that considers diverse teaching methods and learner
backgrounds is necessary. This way, educators can better support students in achieving academic
success and developing critical thinking skills across different educational environments. By
understanding the complexities of language learning and tailoring strategies accordingly, we can
cultivate the linguistic proficiency needed for students to thrive in their academic endeavors and
beyond.
Conclusion:
In conclusion, while research highlights teachers' importance in enhancing writing through higher-order
thinking skills and engaging reading activities, caution is needed due to study limitations. A
comprehensive approach considering diverse methods and learner backgrounds is crucial for effective
language proficiency development.
