PIPE JACKING – VCP PIPE

1.0 CONTROL

The works will be carried out by experienced operatives who will be supervised during the whole of
the works. Only experienced- trained operatives will operate the plant and equipment. All personnel
within the work area will wear the appropriate PPE. Only authorized-trained operatives will be
permitted to drive any plant vehicles and mount abrasive wheels on company machines. All
excavations will be fenced off if unattended at any time.

2.0 GENERAL PROCEDURE

1. Pre-assessment and Setting Out

2. Construction Jacking
3. Pipe jacking works – RCP pipe sleeve
4. Pipe jacking – VCP pipe (225mm dia)
5. Annular space grouting

3.0 METHOD STATEMENT

3.1 PRE-ASSESSMENT AND SETTING OUT

Prior to work commencing, a pre-assessment of the ground conditions will be carried

out, this will involve taking cognizance of the immediate environment, any other works
being carried out in the area adjacent, the likelihood of water ingress etc.

3.2 CONSTRUCTION OF JACKING/RECEIVING PIT

(i) The ground level will be excavated approximately 3100mm x 4100mm wide at 1.5 meters
deep. The 600mm height precast R.C concrete box will be lowered into the excavated
trench. The I-Beam to be place across the precast ring where the excavation to be used to
press down the precast ring down (In case in will not sink down by itself). The I-Beam
is removed.
(ii) 2 workers will continue manually excavate at the bottom ground inside the precast concrete
box trench and secured the position.
(iii) The 2nd precast concrete box now to be place on the 1st precast concrete box. Excavation
work to be continue 0.3m deep at bottom ground. This ring will be sinking itself due to
gravitational force. In case it doesn’t goes, the I beam to be place across the ring and

press down by excavator to get to the correct level.

(iv) The step (2) and (3) will continue until the concrete box reach the correct required level.
(v) When the precast concrete box reaches the required level, the excavation process will be
stop. At this point the ventilation must well-functioning.
(vi) Backfill the gap between outside precast concrete and the ground (if any) by excessive
soil excavated earlier.

The precast concrete box is now as a temporary jacking/receiving shaft. Now the workers
can enter and start preparation for jacking work. All excavations are to be isolated from
unauthorized personnel both during working hours and at night time by an appropriate
barrier system. Operative will work within the R.O.W at all times.

3.3 PIPE JACKING WORKS – RCP PIPE SLEEVE

1.0 Setting Out jacking equipment

i. Transfer the alignment and required level of pipeline to the bottom of the pit.
ii. Concrete the thrust wall and the base to the required line and level.
iii. Construct the guide rails.
iv. Place the hydraulic jacks as necessary at the positions against the concrete thrust wall.

2.0 900mm dia Pipe Sleeve

i. Set up alignment in accordance to the proposed alignment.

ii. Set up the jacking frame and entrance ring at Jacking Shaft. Set the guide frame to the
required gradient and check the level. (Joint survey with Engineer and Main Contractor)
iii. Fit the jacking head at front end of the jacking pipe.
iv. Fix the entrance ring when necessary. (E.g. high-water table with running sand)
v. Cut the shaft cofferdam and push the shield head and the RCP pipes. The exit point will
be hacked from within the caisson with pneumatic hand tools instead of within the pipe.
vi. Ventilation in installed. The 20” diameter ventilating is sufficient to push the fresh air
from the surface to the last pipe inside the tunnel. (No petrol driven motors must be used
inside the shafts, tunnels, and near the ventilating fan).
vii. Using manual excavation. For soft ground condition, the excavation will be inside the
cutter shield while for hard ground such as weathered rock, the excavation will be
300mm outside cutter shield. When stiff materials are encountered, the pneumatic hand
tools will be used.

METHOD STATEMENT
PIPE JACKING – VCP PIPE

viii. The excavated material will be transferred to the surface by means of buggies which
runs on wheel along the pipeline and hoist to the surface at the jacking shaft.
ix. Care and constant monitoring of the level is done at every 1.5m forward movement of
the pipes during the excavation. (Dumping level is used by ‘Engineer’ and supervisors
to check the invert level).
x. Any deviation of line and alignment can be steered back to grade with the use of steering
jacks.
xi. Once the level had been checked, the RCP Pipe is jacked forward.
xii. The excavation is carried forward at the interval of 500mm.
xiii. During the jacking forward, care must be taken to ensure that the ground water is
pumped dry. When necessary, if encounter high water table condition, 24 hours working
will be implemented.

xiv. The steel shield head is also equipped with stop-board. Should there be any front lost of
ground; the timber stop-board will be slot into the built-in slots. These stop-boards will
shut off the face from the open ground in front of the shield. Further sand bags will be
added to the front to contain the inflow of the soil. The main jacks will be used to push
the whole pipeline forward to compact the soft soil at the front.
xv. This method will be used should the needs arises when the operation stop for the day or
shut down.
xvi. On reaching the Receiving Shaft the entry point is hacked to allow the steel shield to
enter. The steel manshield is then removed from the shaft hoisting to a mobile crane.
xvii. The perimeter of the outer edge of the pipe is sealed up by the epoxy mortar to ensure that
no water leaks into shaft.
xviii. At all time, there should be two workers working inside the pipes. These two will rotate
with another two outside the pipes. The times spend per rotation should not be more than
two hours. These workers will be supervised by an experience foreman/safety officer.

3.0 Pipe Jacking – VCP Pipe

i. Prepare VCP pipe with required length to suit jacking pit.

ii. Lower down the pipe into jacking pit and jack forward into pipe sleeve.
iii. Pipe to be inserted into the sleeve by jack forward at 2m interval.
iv. Pipe joint to be fully weld using collar joint.
v. Repeat step 2- step 4 until jacked pipe reach the receiving pit.

4.0 GROUTING OF ANNULAR SPACE BETWEEN VCP PIPE AND PIPE SLEEVE

(i) Seal both end of the annular space between the Pipe sleeve and VCP Pipe 45mm thick brick
wall
(ii) Install two (2) nos of 50mm dia. PVC stand pipe at the of brick wall at receiving pit as air vent.
(iii) Install two length of 100mm dia G I pipe. Place at the top of brick wall at jacking pit, one 5.0m
length and another; length from jacking pit.
(iv) Install additional 50mm dia. PVC standpipe at brick wall as air vent.
(v) Install two (2) nos of 150mm dia. M.S. socket at the brick wall (jacking pit) for connection to
the grouting pump hose.
(vi) Pump into the annular space cement sand mix (ratio of 6:1) through the 100mm length PVC
pipe until the grout flow out through the 2” dia. PVC pipe at receiving pit.
(vii) Repeat step No.5 at the other 150mm dia M.S. socket connected to the 50mm length PVC pipe.
(viii) Cut off the M.S socket and seal with brick wall.

5.0 SITE SAFETY

As the works inside the pipe in enclosed, confine space safety precaution is vital.
The main hazards in confined space are as follow:
(i) Flammable gasses < 10% LEL (Lower Explosive Limit)
(ii) Toxicity (Carbon Monoxide and Methane)
(iii) Low Oxygen Level (18% < O2 < 25%)
(iv) Shaft Structural Stability
(v) Falling object from the top of the Shafts

In order to ensure the safety, all necessary precautions and procedure need to be carried out. Before
anyone can enter into the shaft, sufficient ventilation and gas check to be carry out. During working
in confined space, ventilation process to be carry out continuously.

All personnel working inside and above the shaft must be equipped with proper Personnel Protective
Equipment (PPE).
