Sensitive Plant (Mimosa Pudica) As Insect Repellent: Background

Sensitive Plant (Mimosa Pudica) as Insect Repellent Insect repellents are used to protect against insect bites that can cause illness or disease. While chemical repellents are common, plant-based repellents have also been used for generations. The document examines using extracts from the sensitive plant (Mimosa Pudica) as a natural insect repellent. It discusses how many plants produce chemicals to repel insects and how natural repellents could provide an alternative to DEET-based repellents. The sensitive plant may contain compounds that could potentially repel mosquitoes and other insects known to transmit diseases.

Sensitive Plant (Mimosa Pudica) as Insect Repellent

Background
Insect repellents commonly known as “bug sprays'' are agents that are used to
protect the body from the bites of insects that can cause local or systemic effects.
They are applied to the skin, clothing, or other surfaces which discourages insects
(and arthropods in general) from landing or climbing on that surface. Insect repellents
currently fall into two categories: chemical repellents and natural plant-derived
repellents. Knowledge of traditional repellent plants is a significant resource for the
development of new natural products as an alternative to chemical repellents, Maia &
Moore 2011. Plant-based repellents have been used for generations in traditional
practice as a personal protection measure against host-seeking mosquitoes,
Asadollahi,Khoobdel, Ramazani, Azarmi, & Hussain 2019 . Most plants contain
compounds that they use in preventing attack from phytophagous (plant eating)
insects. These chemicals fall into several categories, including repellents, feeding
deterrents, toxins, and growth regulators. They are important tools of public health to
prevent infectious vector borne diseases and allergic reactions.
Many studies have reported evidence of repellant activities of plant extracts or
essential oils against malaria vectors worldwide. According to Ngan 2008, some bites
cause only local skin irritation, some can cause serious illnesses and possibly death
as the insects act as carriers or vectors of diseases. Mosquito-transmitted diseases
remain a main source of illness and death. Despite decades of malaria control
efforts, malaria continues to be a major worldwide public health issue. But the use of
repellents to protect people from bites of mosquitoes previously has been
acknowledged as part of an overall integrated insect-borne disease control
programme. The EPA, a United States Environmental Protection Agency states that a
number of repellent products contain chemical compounds like DEET (N, N- Diethyl-
meta-toluamide) used as active chemical components in insect repellent, but are now
turned to all natural ingredients as more and more negative data is released.
Insect repellents may have different characteristics but serve the same purpose
which is by keeping insects that carry disease away from us and from our area.
Whether a natural or chemical based repellent, still it is very useful and helpful to the
community to protect, destroy and prevent the spread of diseases. There are
different types of insect repellents and these products are not designed to eliminate
pests. Some of these types are Clip-on products that have a pad with the repellent
and a fan or other mechanism that disperses the repellent near your body and
Spatial repellents use a heating mechanism to disperse repellent in an outdoor area,
EPA 2021. Thus, insect repellents prevent, destroy, repel, and mitigate pests that
can cause harm to human beings.
