our topic for today.
II. Presentation
Gravity is the pulling force exerted by Earth on

all objects. This is a downward force toward
Earth.
When an object falls, its speed increases just

before it reaches the ground because of gravity.
Imagine when someone gave you a sudden

pull. Your body makes a quick movement
toward the person. This is the same with
gravity. A falling object experiences a
downward force due to gravity.
Gravity also affects objects that are thrown up

in the air.
Get a small rubber ball or a piece of crumpled
paper and throw it up in the air. When the ball
moves up, it reaches a certain height until it
falls toward the ground. The ball falls like a
regular falling object acted upon by gravity.
In this case, the ball experiences the force from
your hand and the force of gravity.
Take this dart pin as an example.

(Be careful with the sharp end of the dart pin.)
From afar, hit the bull's eye with the pin.
Observe the motion of the pin. Instead of going

straight to the target, the pin travels a curved
path. Gravity also affects the motion of the pin.
Even if you throw the pin horizontally, the
force of gravity still pulls it down.
To hit the target, the pin should be released at a

certain distance from the target. Aside from
curving its horizontal path, gravity also causes
the pin to move fast. In this case, the pin also
experiences the force from your hand and the
force due to gravity.
Shooting a ball in a basketball game also shows

an effect of gravitational force. The ball is also
affected by gravity.
Like any other object that is thrown upward,
the ball experiences a pulling force, thus giving
it a curved path until it falls to the ground. To
shoot the ball, the players throw it at a certain
angle from the basket.
Gravitational force also acts on stationary

objects or objects at rest.
For example, gravity acts on a box on a table.

This gravitational force brings about the weight
of the box. The reason the box does not fall into
the ground is the upward normal force that the
table exerts on the box.
The amount of normal force is equal to the
weight of the box.
Look at the picture of the box here. Normal

force and gravity act opposite to each other.
