Short Answer Questions:

1. Define environment

Environment can be defined as a sum total of all the living and non-living elements and
their effects that influence human life

2. Define environment awareness

Environmental awareness is the understanding of natural environment protection and the

activities that can cause harm to the environment.

3. Enlist constituents of environment

The basic components of the environment are atmosphere or the air, lithosphere or the
rocks and soil, hydrosphere or the water, and the living component of ²the environment
or the biosphere.

4. Define Environmental studies

Environmental studies is an interdisciplinary academic field which studies human

interaction with the environment for solving complex problems. It is a field of study that
examines the natural and built environment via anthropology, sociology, psychology, history,
policy, ethics and geospatial perspectives.

5. Which are three pillars of sustainability?

The three pillars of sustainability are the environment, society, and the economy,

6. Define Sustainability
the ability of people to safely co-exist on Earth over a long time.

7. Define Sustainable development

Sustainable development is development that meets the needs of the present without
compromising the ability of future generations to meet their own needs.

Long Answer Questions:

1. Explain the structure of Environment

The four major components of environment include lithosphere, hydrosphere,
atmosphere and biosphere, corresponding to rocks, water, air and life respectively.

Lithosphere is the outermost layer of earth called crust, which is made of different
minerals.

Hydrosphere comprises of all forms of water bodies on earth including oceans, seas,
rivers, lakes, ponds, streams etc. It covers 70% of earth’s surface

Atmosphere is gaseous layer enveloping the Earth

Biosphere refers to all the regions on Earth where life exists. The ecosystems that
support life could be in soil, air, water or land.

2. Explain in brief the multidisciplinary nature of environmental studies.

Environmental studies is multi-disciplinary because it comprises various branches of studies

like chemistry, physics, medical science, life science, agriculture and public health. It is
the science of physical phenomena in the environment. Environmental studies deals with every
issue that affects an organism.

3. Write a note on scope and importance of environmental studies

• Environment belongs to all living beings and thus is important for all. Each one is
affected by environmental issues like global warming, depletion of ozone layer,
dwindling forest, energy resources, loss of global biodiversity etc.
• Environment study deals with the analysis of the processes in water, air, land,
soil and organisms which lead to pollute or degrade the environment. It helps us
to establish a standard for a safe, clean and healthy natural ecosystem.
• It also deals with important issues like safe and clean drinking water, hygienic
living conditions and clean and fresh air, fertility of land, healthy food and
development.
• Sustainable environmental law, environmental protection, management and
environmental engineering are emerging as dimensions in environment
protection and management.

4. Write a note on sustainability and sustainable development.

a. Sustainability is the ability to exist and develop without depleting
natural resources for the future.

II. Sustainable development is development that meets the needs of the present
without compromising the ability of future generations to meet their own needs.
Example
1.Solar energy: Harnessing the solar energy to reduce pollution in the
environment.
2.Crop Rotation : Planting different types of crops on the same land on a rotational basis
for improving soil fertility.
5. Explain the three pillars of sustainability in detail.

1. Social sustainability includes environmental justice, human health, resource

security, and education, among other important social elements of society.

2. Economic sustainability includes job creation, profitability, and proper

accounting of ecosystem services for optimal cost-benefit analyses.

3. Environmental sustainability focuses on the well-being of the environment.

This pillar includes water quality, air quality, and reduction of environmental
stressors, such as greenhouse gas emissions

6. Write a note on segments of environment.

7. Explain how environmental study is beneficial.

Environment studies is all about learning the way we should live and how we can develop
sustainable strategies to protect the environment. It helps individuals to develop an
understanding of living and physical environment and how to resolve challenging
environmental issues affecting nature.
